It wasn't as heavy as he remembered but it was still as big. Or was it? It was hard to tell. The last few months had been such a blur after Impressing Genireth and O'dyn knew that he hadn't spent long enough at Printer Hall to really get a feel for everything but at least he was certain he wasn't going to _drop_ the big book this time. Weyrling training had given him muscles! Which was weird.
Carefully, the littlest bluerider carried the heavy tome out to the courtyard where Genireth had been patiently waiting. "Okay, we have to be careful with this," O'dyn said to his dragon as he approached. Genireth didn't move a muscle. His tail was still curled around his feet, his head was held at a curious but still angle. He could have passed for a blue painted statue in that moment!
"Okay, so this..." O'dyn said as he laid the book down in front of Genireth. "This is a dictionary! It has all of the words _ever_ said and their definitions, so you know how to spell the word and how to say it and what it means. Sometimes it even gives a history of the word! Et..um...ent...no. E-ty-mo-logy. Etymology. That's the word!"
As he spoke, he opened the book and began carefully turning pages. Genireth slowly lowered his head, his eyes whirling a placid green, as he turned all of those jeweled facets towards the pages. }: This...is all of it? :{
"What do you mean?" O'dyn asked.
}: I...thought it would be bigger? It seemed bigger when you remembered it. :{
"Oh, well, um. Maybe it was? Maybe I grew? It used to be bigger, that's for sure. It was way bigger. But I think I was smaller then. I mean, I'm still small but you get the idea. But it's still a lot of pages. It's the biggest book there is!"
}: Are we adding it to our library? You like books in our library. :{
"Oh, shells no! I don't have the marks to buy this. It's _expensive_. Only the Hall and maybe a few of the big Holds have one. It's a really important book though."
}: It seems like it. Even for something so small. :{
"It's not small!" O'dyn said defensively. Then he looked at Genireth's paw nearby, realizing that the dragon would have no problem palming the dictionary or ripping it apart with ease. "Oh, actually, it's probably small compared to you. You're a lot bigger than it. But look! Here's the entry for dragon!" O'dyn turned the book so that Genireth could see.
}: There's no...pictures? I don't think a dragon looks like a bunch of words. How will anyone really get the idea of a dragon without a picture? :{
"Oh, that's a _great_ idea! An illustrated dictionary! Wow, that would be a really, really big book though. And how would you draw some of the words? The nouns are easy to draw but the verbs? Or adverbs? Adjectives could be drawn but not articles or-"
}: What's a noun? :{
"It's a -- oh wait, let's read it together!" Eagerly, O'dyn turned to the entry for noun and began to read its definition. "A word used to identify any class of people, place, or thing."
}: Am I a noun? :{
"Yes! I mean, you are but you aren't people and you're not a place but I'm not going to call you a thing because you're my dragon and I love you so you're...sort of people, how about that?" Genireth's eyes whirled with affection and O'dyn's face broke into a big smile. "You're the best noun ever!"
}: This dictionary thing is neat. I like it. Find another word. :{ With great care, Genireth arranged himself so that O'dyn could scoot his little form against the dragon's bulk but still allow for the dragon to see the words. For the next hour, anyone who looked out of the windows of the Hall would see a little dragonrider reading a very big book to his dragon and both of them enjoying every minute of it.
Somewhere in Printer Hall, a young illustrator was quickly sketching the adorable scene unfolding in their courtyard. She couldn't wait to show Master Aleriand.
