They came out from /between/ near the Seahold itself, though N’kevyn directed Avicath to stay high and fly past the Seahold, heading down the coast line for the open sand. They weren’t making a social call right now, but rather on another firelizard hunt, and N’kevyn was feeling very optimistic about their chances this time.
A particularly nice stretch of sand caught Avicath’s eye, and N’kevyn let him go down, reasoning that what looked nice to a dragon might look nice to a firelizard. Slipping off his bronze, he started to ask his daughter if she needed a hand down, only to discover she’d beaten him.
“Alright. Are you ready to see our new secret weapon?”
Aydhara was patting Avicath's round belly as she waited for her father to dismount. She looked at him and his dumb-looking outfit skeptically. "Is it better than the stick that kept leading you to the ocean?" She asked.
“I’ve been assured that this is a much better tool,” N’kevyn said seriously as he fished into one of his pockets. He had a lot of pockets today, on either side of the vest he was wearing, and they all seemed to be full.
Pulling out a tube, he put it to his mouth and produced a rather alarming squawking sound. “I've been practicing for days. It's a firelizard call.”
"There is no way that's a firelizard call." Aydhara said after a moment of dumbfounded silence, between the outfit that would have been more in place at a fishing hole than a beach and the ridiculous whistle. "But it can't make our chances worse, at this rate. So, 'Lizard Whisperer, do we have to hide while you communicate with the critters or will they flock to you like a storybook?"
“We should probably hide. There’s a few rocks down that way,” N’kevyn suggested. “Don’t worry, I got you a firelizard caller too, but it takes some practice. You probably won’t be able to do it immediately.”
"Oh good, if it was only you doing this I'd feel silly." Aydhara said. She started making her way over to the rocks, reaching a hand out for her father to hand her the supposed 'firelizard caller'. "Do you know how to say 'give me your eggs' in firelizard?"
“You’re the one with a friend who has a firelizard,” N’kevyn pointed out. “Hasn’t she told you how to find one?”
"She got Digger as a gift!" Aydhara exclaimed. "Your friend G'wen has firelizards, too. He's in your Wing. Go ask him."
“Oh, he didn’t find his in the wild either. He knew someone with a gold firelizard. I haven’t managed to make any friends with connections like that,” N’kevyn said seriously. “Besides, it’ll be more fun to find a clutch, won’t it?”
"The books always make finding firelizard nests easier than it is." Aydhara grumbled. They scrambled behind the outcropping of rock, lying flat to try and hide themselves from the beach below. "Okay Dad, give it a shot."
Ducking down, N’kevyn put the tube to his lips, took a deep breath… and made the loud squawking noise again. Pausing for a moment, he listened, then did it again.
}:You’re embarrassing me,:{ Avicath said pleasantly so they both could hear.
"You're embarrassing Avicath!" Aydhara stage-whispered.
“Thank you I-”
Suddenly, there was a very different squawking sound as a pair of green firelizards did in fact appear… and proceeded to divebomb the two hiding behind the rocks, buffeting them with wings. There was a tearing sound as one managed to catch part of N’kevyn’s vest, ripping off one of the little pockets.
Aydhara shrieked and covered her head with her arms. The other firelizard grabbed her floppy hat and tore it off her head. "What did you do?!"
N’kevyn just yelled and swatted at the firelizard divebombing him.
With a resigned sigh, Avicath, who had just finished digging himself a nice little wallow, stood up, looking towards the chaos. Then the big bronze roared. His bulky stature and wide chest made it a particularly loud and deep roar, and the firelizards decided that whatever offense N’kevyn had caused, it was not worth dealing with that, and promptly disappeared.
Aydhara grabbed her hat and jammed it back on her head without a care for the talon-sized holes now around the brim. "Good job, _Dad_."
N’kevyn was inspecting a tear in his new vest, “Maybe I just need more practice. Clearly it worked! I just must have said something rude.”
"Oh sure, it was your tone that was the problem." Aydhara said as she climbed back over the rocks. "You try again, I'm going to go stand over by Avicath."
The bronze helpfully lifted a (very sandy) wing to put it over her.
N’kevyn pulled out his “firelizard” caller again. This time, the sound that came out was more hesitant, and he ended it quickly to look around. “I don’t think it’s going to work again,” he said, picking his way back towards his dragon. “Maybe we should just go get lunch at Sunstone? Surely there’s somewhere nice there.”
