Jaylene

No matter how she tried to rearrange it, the math in Jaylene’s head wouldn’t line up the way she wanted it to. It shouldn’t have been but she had a soft spot in her heart for the candidate Lafael ever since she and Uetia had rescued him from his terrible situation back at Sunstone Hold. Being a HAD she had been more than confidant that he would find his lifemate out on the sands. But that was two turns ago and still the lad was always left wanting. And he wasn’t getting younger. By Jay’s math he would be too old by the time of their next hatching. She’d asked around for information at other Weys and one name kept coming up, Dolphin Cove. Her mind made up, she marched off to M’thos’ office and smartly knocked on the door.

"Come on in!" M'thos called from inside. He took a moment to stretch out the kink in his upper back as he looked up, then grinned. "What can I do for you, Jaylene? Not trying to convince me to go back to the Wings, are you?"

“No…” For once she wasn’t her usual cheerful self. Absent-mindedly she sat down on the edge of the chair opposite M’thos’ desk and looked him in the eyes, her own large and full of worry. “Lafael…he’ll be too old by the time we have another hatching, won’t he?”

"Lafael? Huh. Well, it's not like the dragons give us a set schedule." M'thos said, although he did flip open his pocket calendar to stare at the list of important dates K'yne and T'lonas had compiled over the course of the last turn. "Although...I wouldn't be particularly hopeful, yeah. The age range isn't an exact science, but he'd be about the age where we'd be encouraging him to try out other areas in the Lower Caverns that might be a better fit."

“But he can hear all the dragons,” she said in a sad tone. “He…he_can’t_be encouraged off the sands.” She slid back into the chair, her foot tapping in anxiety. She glanced at M’thos and gave him a melancholy smile. “You didn’t see him when he came in..it’s not only that he can hear all of them. Uetia and I found him at Sunstone, her brother had figured it out and told us. The boy was just skin and bones…he’d been abused, he was our lost little canine. You see…Lafael deserves a dragon. I don’t know why it’s not working here, maybe because he’s been here too long, he’s too familiar with every dragon. He deserves a pretty little green…” The last sentence was more her thoughts being said out loud, and her voice trailed off as she looked down at the floor, remembering the scared timid child that Lafael had been when they found him.

"Have you told him about the 'pretty little green' thoughts?" M'thos asked mildly, "Because sometimes that sways it, too. He'd have a good chance with greens since there's so many of us, but that could be preventing a compatible boy from finding him."

“No, I’d never tell him that, it just slipped out. I’m not even sure Lafael ever thought about if he’d actually get a dragon or not, I don’t think he truly believed he’s worthy. But…if the boy is willing, there_is_a clutch on the Sands at Dolphin Cove. Could I have your permission, as the lad’s 2nd, to take him over to that Weyr for a few seven days, just until the hatching? Just to give him one last chance? It’s always a great asset to any Weyr to have a child who can hear dragons and is also a rider.” She hoped her large eyes weren’t too pleading.

"It's Lafael's decision if he wants to transfer to Dolphin Cove." M'thos said firmly. "And then it would be R'lor and Sh'del's decision to accept the transfer. It's not uncommon to move candidates around, especially if they have family at other Weyrs, but we can't run a circuit of our favorite kids to maximize how many hatchings they Stand for. Have you talked to Lafael about this yet? If he's happy and has built a family here, he might not want to move anyway."

“Well, there’s only one way to find out.” Jaylene reached out to Reanth. **Love, can you ask Lafael to come to the Weyrlingmaster 2nd’s office?**

}:Certainly:{ There was a long pause in Jay’s head. }:And I have, he’s on his way.:{
