K'mai arrived fashionably late with two wine skins cradled against his chest. The weyr was already buzzing with activity. "N'kyri! Looks like a great turnout!"
Light and music spilled out into the summer air from the double ledged suite, originally made for a weyrmated rider pair. (Though it was open knowledge that N’kyri never kept a weyrmate long). The western ledge had been claimed as a balcony for those who wanted a little air and space, the eastern was kept clear for late arrivals like K’mai. The gregarious host wasn't hard to find. He was where the party was thickest, leading some sort of drinking game. He pulled away when he saw the other Cyan man, “K’mai! Welcome, welcome! Welcome to the Last party of the Turn! Well, the Last unless you want to skip off west and see what Far Island has to offer in a few candelmarks.”
He laughed in a carefree way, as if it wouldn’t matter at all to him, but it was clear to anyone with eyes that the bluerider had spent a good deal on his own shindig. There was a band playing, food on every available surface, and drinks aplenty. It was, afterall, also his birthing day celebration.
“Really,” he gave K’mai’s shoulder a squeeze, blue eyes bright. “I’m glad you could make it.”
"I wouldn't miss it. And happy birthingday." K'mai grinned.
"Happy birthingday, old man!" A brownrider bounded up to the pair, nearly sending the bowl of snacks he'd brought along as his contribution flying. L'keri was beaming with excitement - Turn's End was without doubt the best day for a wild party to leave behind all the highs and lows of the past thirteen months, and N'kyri's parties never failed to live up to the occasion. "How many Turns is it now?"
N'kyri reflexively helped steady the snacks, snagging a bite as he did. "Forty, can you believe it?" He seemed a bit in awe of it himself. "Eleven of them full of more Thread than Weaverhall. I owe it all to Oriath" and now you Cyan daredevils."
"You're lucky you ended up in the best Wing at Dragonsfall," K'mai said. "I'm gonna set these down and pour myself a drink." He glanced over at L'keri. "Should I get you a juice or some klah?"
"Juice would be good, thanks." L'keri grabbed a handful of the snacks - it was a Turn's End party, after all, he'd have all next Turn to eat healthily. "So, have you got any special plans lined up for your party, birthday boy? Games? Dares? Singing and dancing?"
"Always singing and dancing," grins N'kyri. "Wouldn't be a party without that." Actually, he didn't think it was much of a party without drinks either, but L'keri seemed to defy that rule. The man was at least as fun sober as many were deep in their cups. "There's a scavenger hunt planned for later. The team that brings back the most wins-- well, you'll see."
"Ooh!" The brownrider's eyes lit up. Now that was a good idea for a party game! "You'll want me and K'mai on your team, then. He can charm people into handing over the most peculiar items. Remind me to tell you some time what he got our Weyrlingmaster's weyrmate to give him, back when we were both just innocent young lads."
K'mai came back and only caught the last few words. "When were you ever innocent? Maybe when you were still in nappies." K'mai handed L'keri a glass of juice.
"Apparently back in your weyrlinghood," laughed their host. "L'keri is trying to convince me to take you both for my scavenger hunt team. G'zan made the list. I'm expecting some truly outrageous things. Think you can handle it?" N'kyri grinned, clearly excited himself.
"Oh absolutely!" K'mai grinned.
"G'zan made it? Now you tell us." L'keri pulled a face that was half mock-grimace and the rest anticipation. "Then you'll definitely need your best players on your side. This could be quite a night."
"Could be?! It /will/ be." It would absolutely be a night to remember if N'kyri had any say in it. "Alright. I'm sold, lads. I'll go sign us up. You two get your mingling in before the hunt begins!" Clapping them both on the shoulder he left, turning into the crowd to fight his way over to the sign up table.
K'mai held up his thumb and forefinger with a small space between. "I'm actually a _tiny_ bit nervous about what G'zan might have cooked up." He laughed.
"I'm not! I got us onto the birthingday boy's team," L'keri said, looking entirely too pleased with himself. "That means we can make him do all of the most embarrassing items on the list."
K'mai laughed. "An excellent point!" He took a drink of wine and glanced around at the party. "I think N'kyri outdid himself this time." If it wasn't the man's birthingday, K'mai might be a little jealous.
"He did, indeed. Look how many greenriders are here!" The brownrider gazed around the room, unable to settle on where the best temptations lay. "And the snacks - he must have someone in the kitchens who really likes him. I'm sure I never managed to get _three_ plates of those little iced pastries out of the cooks."
"Everyone knows blueriders are better at flirting."
"I'm not going to argue that at a bluerider's birthingday party," L'keri said graciously. "What do you think - should we invite a greenrider or two to join our team?"
K'mai grinned. "Shameless ones, in case there's something so outrageous even N'kyri doesn't want to do it."
The game starts on the next candelmark. The rules are outlined (everything must be brought back to N'kyri's weyr to be verified and scored by officials) and soon there's a riotous countdown that ends in "Go, go, go!" and N'kyri is fighting his way back to K'mai and L'keri, a scrap of paper in his hands. He thrusts it out between them so they can all read G'zan's concoction at once:
Scavenger Hunt
1. A purple scarf, 5 points
2. One BLUE thing that belongs to somebody in a different Wing (bonus points if it’s underwear), 5-10 points
3. One original limerick by any harper who is NOT in the hunt or at the party, 5 points
4. A live wherry chick, 10 points
5. A dragon toy (wood or plush or whatever, but please return to babies when done, ya hoodlum), 5 points
6. Wingsecond rank knots (weave your own if you don’t wanna borrow or steal, I’m not your wingleader), 10 points
7. An ugly fruit (like an actual thing that grows in the ground, don’t bother I’maek), 5 points
8. A boot full of snow (not just cold water, better hurry), 5 points
9. One signed note from any Weyrlingmaster or his staff saying that you are a good boy/girl, 10 points
10. N’kyri’s favorite pastry, 5 points
"Well..." blinked their host, assessing the damage. "I'll handle number 4 if one of you does 9."
K'mai snorted as he read the list. "Oh G'zan . . . I'm absolutely sure I know at least one person with blue underwear. The question is if they'll let me borrow them. Lucky for you, I have no shame about knocking on doors and asking."
"I can get hold of a toy," L'keri volunteered. His daughter had plenty, though he'd have to sneak in to her foster mother's to get one since it was well past her bedtime. His grin turned wicked. "And I'm definitely up for pilfering from a Wingsecond. But do you think it would be cheating for you to do 10, N'kyri?"
"G'zan didn't explicitly say not to, so it _can't_ be cheating," said N'kyri with a twinkle, before dropping his voice to a conspiratorial whisper: "Besides. I'm not quiet about my likes. There's three trays of redfruit tarts in this room." Straightening again he tucked the paper away. "Alright, that should be a good start for us all. Let's split up and get to it. Sing out if you need help-- or an accomplice."
K'mai hurried off toward the most likely source of blue underthings with a spring in his step and a smile on his face.
"I could use a wingsecond distractor." L'keri scanned the room, his gaze lighting on a curvy greenrider in a deliciously tight dress. He grinned. "And Veralie owes me a favor. Back in a bit!"
Satisfied, N'kyri darted off himself. Off to wrangle a wherry. It was going to be a memorable Turn's End.
