Saibra

Saibra waited as Jadirah left and then in a moment was replaced by Talwynn.
Talwynn was one of Saibra's wingriders, someone she felt she knew pretty
well, and she felt sure that even if D'kere was guilty, Talwynn would be
open and honest with her answers.

"Thank you for meeting with us Talwynn, please have a seat." Saibra began.
"I know it was difficult being banned from your weyr last night and not
being able to speak with D'kere. I'd like to ask you about your last mating
flight, I believe it was a couple of days ago? Who won that?"

"Good morning Weyrwoman, Weyrleader," Talwynn said with a salute to them
both. "Yesterday morning, as you may remember Riveth and I missed a drill
because of it. It was D'kere's Kenirath who won... After a late lunch I
headed out to sweeps, to dinner, and then to stellar observation duty in the
evening."

"Do you recall there being in marks on D'kere's skin? Before or after your
flight?" Saibra asked.

Well, this was an interesting line of questioning. Very personal, and a
little awkward to tell your wingleader about... Fortunately she was weyrbred
and wasn't going to blush like a silly holder girl. "I know I left some
during the flight. I tend to be rough with nips and scratching. Prior flight
partners or bedmates will probably back me up on that."

"I know it's a personal topic, but I need you to be more specific. When you
say you left 'some'... Where? What kind?" Saibra asked.

She half-closed her eyes, searching back her memories of the flight. "I know
I left at least a love bruise on the side of his neck up by his jawline, I
scratched his shoulders with my nails. An actual bite mark on his shoulder,
too."

Saibra jotted down the answer, comparing them with what she had observed as
she gave K'reyel a nod to ask his question.

"You didn't see D'kere again that day then?" asked K'reyel.

She shook her head, the dirty blond hair bobbing around her ears with the
motion. "No, because I had evening duties I wasn't expecting to see him
until I returned to our weyr, which didn't happen."

"What do you know about D'kere's connection to Yasmeane, if there is one?"
Saibra asked, since D'kere had said that Talwynn was aware of the original
conflict between D'kere and Yasmeane.

Talwynn couldn't stop the grimace on her face as she answered. "Yasmeane
apparently came to D'kere asking him to take her virginity before the
flight. D'kere replied he'd have to consult with me first because we're
weyrmated, as opposed to turning her down immediately. He brought it up to
me, I blew up at him because I said that it was offensive he even asked
because we were weyrmates and he wanted us to be that so we'd be exclusive.
He said he'd go tell her no, he wouldn't be able to."

Saibra tilted her head. "And do you know if he had any more contact with her
after that?"

"I don't know," she said. "The next day, I didn't speak to him again before
Riveth rose."

Saibra shared a glance with K'reyel and then asked, "Has D'kere ever been
physically abusive with you?"

"Never," Talwynn said immediately. "He's a good and tender man, he rarely
raises his voice or loses his temper, placid like a brown dragon."

"Anything else, Weyrleader?" Saibra asked as she jotted down Talwynn's
words.

"Would you say that it would be completely out of character for him to have
forced himself on Yasmeane, or any other woman, outside of a flight?" Just
because Talwynn said she hadn't seen anything like that herself, didn't mean
that it wasn't possible. And riders all knew that flights were a different
matter, their dragons would choose the partner for them.

"Incredibly out of character," she replied promptly. "He's far too gentle
for that, the kind of person who would stop and check in during things, I
just can't see him pushing himself on anyone unwilling."

Saibra studied the many notes that she had written and the arrows that she
had drawn between them. From D'kere's account and Talwynn's character
testimony, it seemed unlikely that the bronzerider would force himself on
someone, but they were weyrmates and would see the best in each other.
Yasmeane's tearful account had not seemed faked or forced, something had
happened to her, and someone had done it. She circled the name "S'gair" with
her pencil. Everything all depended on what S'gair had to say.

"Thank you, Talwynn." Saibra said with a nod. "That's all for now. You can
return to your weyr or whatever duties you had scheduled for today."

**To my weyr...good,** she thought. She had a sweep first, but then she'd
get to see D'kere after.

"Thank you, Weyrleaders," she said with another salute and stood up to head
out.

"I don't think D'kere forced her," K'reyel said once Talwynn had left. "He
might not have handled the situation as well as he could, but I don't think
he was the one who got her that worked up."

"Agreed, and if he was someone to be very physical, I'm sure Talwynn would
have seen some hint of it from the past couple of Turns." Saibra reasoned.
"But I don't feel like Yasmeane is completely lying either."

"I think we need the missing piece of the story. Is S'gair back yet?" asked
K'reyel.

}:I called him to return,:{ Chioneth told Saibra. }:He is in the Weyr.:{

"Chioenth says he's on his way here now," Saibra replied to her Weyrleader.

The brownrider in question walked in the door at that moment. He looked to
be just out of his teens, with good looks that still had a bit of puberty
softness. He stood at average height and had sun-streaked blond hair that
looked touseled - probably because it had just come out from under a riding
cap. Seeing both the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman, he snapped them a salute.

"I'm sorry we're late. Torvinth and I were on sweeps duty over Amber Hills,"
S'gair said.

"Have a seat," Saibra instructed, gesturing to the chair. "Chioneth tells us
that you won Greenrider Yasmeane's flight yesterday. The Weyrleader and I
would like your account, as best you remember, of how that flight went."

S'gair's eyes slid slowly between the Weyrleader and Weyrwoman, thinking the
question an odd one, but then... the flight had been an odd one.
