Ninaine hung back near the doorway to the class, waiting for the
weyrling lecture to finish. She watched the weyrlings with a bit of
interest, but in truth, her mind was far elsewhere. Even though a few
of them were actually older in age than she, they seemed so young to
her. Many still had that gleam of idealism that she remembered from
her own weyrling class. She didn't know if she'd ever had that look;
she didn't think so. At the time, she'd been far too concerned with
controlling Luneth and her own changed life.
When the lecture finished and the weyrlings filed out, Ninaine stepped
in, clearing her throat. "Excuse me, D'kere. Do you have a moment?"
D'kere looked up at the sound, surprised to see Ninaine. "Sure, come
in." He turned and began wiping away the notes he'd written on the
board behind him. When he finished he wiped his hands on pants and
turned to the greenrider. "What can I do for you?"
She took a breath, looking around the classroom, then turned back to
him. It was difficult for her, this asking for help. She was so used
to trying to struggle on her own and not relying on anyone but N'call.
But as J'lor had said, what she'd been doing hadn't been working out
well for her. The Weyr was supposed to be a family, it was a concept
she'd always avoided. "I need your advice and help." Ninaine
swallowed, struggling a little. "I know while I was a weyrling I
wasn't good at much. But, now that Luneth can't fly Thread, I need to
find something constructive to do...a Craft. The problem is, I'm not
good at anything that I can think of besides embroidery and that's not
very...contributing."
The bronzrider lifted a leg and sat on the end of his desk as he
considered what Ninaine was asking. Becoming retired from fighting
Thread at such a young age was difficult, he imagined, but not unlike
what dragonriders during the Intervals had to face. The problem of
feeling needed and useful was a legitimate concern. "Well, that
Weyrling I sent to you, to mend and work on riding straps, you did a
perfect job with those. Have you ever considered the tannercraft? You
could shadow some of the tanners and see what it is like." D'kere's
eyes narrowed a bit as he searched his memory. "Wingsecond K'yne, he
is a part of the tannercraft, you could possibly talk with him."
She blinked, remembering the straps. That had been a simple matter of
sewing and she had, as a matter of fact, really enjoyed making sure
that the straps fit and worked right for the dragons. She had liked
working with the leather. She even liked how it smelled as she worked
it; it was an earthy, pleasant smell and she liked the way the hides
felt in her hands. But K'yne, he seemed so intimidating and stern. "I
was told to find a Mastercrafter to apprentice to. But perhaps I could
see him to speak about what would be expected." She paused.
"D'kere...do you think that maybe I could help the other Weyrlings
with their straps? In a class?"
"Absolutely," D'kere said, he was always looking for guest teachers.
"They could use a lesson on adjusting and tailoring premade straps to
fit their dragons."
Ninaine finally offered a smile. "Thank you. I really enjoyed helping
T'leri. He said that J'kel was rather dry and difficult to learn from.
If I can help, then I'd really like to. Do you know where I might
find K'yne?"
"In his office, I would expect." D'kere said, even as the thought
briefly flitted through his mind that Ninaine should smile more often,
it transformed her features entirely. "If you don't catch him there
I'm sure you could talk with Master Taric is in the tannner's
workshop. I think the man may very well be weyrmated to it."
"I may try Master Taric first, if only to see if he's accepting
apprentices. There's no use talking to K'yne if it's not an option for
me." She pushed her hair from her face, tucking the length behind her
shoulders. She wasn't used to wearing it down, but there was little
point in cutting it or braiding it when she wasn't in a fighting wing.
"When can I start the classes?"
D'kere looked over his shoulder at the calendar. "They're having
another lecture day after tomorrow, in the morning, if that works for
you."
"I can be there." It wasn't as though she had much else to do. "Thank you."
"Of course, Ninaine, any time." He assured her.
