"All right, Lamsi, listen to this one," Manaia said, but was abruptly cut
off.
"If there is _anything_," Lamsi said, tightening a nut conjoining two pipes,
"about quivering, or _trembling_, or any other kind of strange, graphic
description of flesh, don't even start!"
Dozens of holders were whining about having the hot water pump turned off
for repairs, and she was babbling in her ear about romance scrolls.
"Hand me my ratchet," she said, and the tool was quickly placed in the hand
she held behind her.
"'You'll never be alone, Mira. Adjith and I promise,' the bronzerider
whispered deeply in her ear, pressing his body close to hers.
'But he'll find me, R'bor,' she pleaded. 'You know you can't keep me
forever.'
'There is a clutch on the Sands,' he suggested. 'He'd never be able to take
you from me if you Impressed. Until then, I think I have the perfect hiding
place for you: right between my bedsheets.'
A slow, seductive smile spread across her lips, and as they kissed
passionately, she was, but for a moment, truly happy.' " Manaia finished.
"What do you think?"
"It's a masterpiece, Manaia."
"Oh! You're not even listening!" She whined as she watched Lamsi finish
tightening in the last of the bolts that had burst and then pull the lever
that spurred the pump back into motion.
"No, honestly, I was. It's...good if you're someone who appreciates romance
scrolls," Lamsi said, watching the pipelines for any signs of leakage or
stress.
"You know, Lamsi, what you need is a man," Manaia grinned.
"Like I need a hole in my head."
"You mean you're never wished you could just be swept away like the women in
some of the romance novels?" The young girl asked, leaning back on one arm
and throwing her other in air dramatically.
"Not a once."
Manaia was silent for a moment.
"Do you know what I've always wondered?" She scanned over the hide she'd
just finished. "We, well, writers anyway, write the lives out for all of
these people. Sometimes, it seems like they get lives of their own and don't
even know you're on the other side of the pen."
"Don't you ever wonder that, Lamsi, if maybe _we're_ just characters in a
story and someone is on the other side of our lives, writing down our every
move as we make it?"
"Manaia, my dear, I think you've finally lost your mind."
