Description: J'nus takes a look at Corvera's broken chair
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 13 of Turn 3
Corvera gingerly laid out the broken bits of one of her favorite
chairs. Today was the day that J'nus was going to inspect that and,
possibly, break the bad news. She finished her bit of work and then
sat down on her couch with a goblet of mild wine. The last time she
and J'nus had spoken she had done a pretty solid job of making a fool
of herself and she hoped this time, after calming herself with the
wine, things would go better.
A soft knock on her door heralded the bronzerider's arrival, and he
let himself in when she called out a welcome. J'nus glanced quickly
around the room before settling on the Weyrwoman, smiling slightly.
"I hope I didn't keep you waiting."
"Not at all." She rose from the couch to meet him halfway through the
room. "I'm just grateful you're here at all. As silly as it seems,
this chair" she pointed to the wreckage on the table. "Means a lot to
me."
J'nus winced and moved over to take a closer look. "For something you
care about, it's sure taken a lot of abuse." He picked up one of the
legs, the wood smooth against his palm, and examined the place where
it had broken.
"Hey!" Corvera cried out. "Those have been in my family for
generations! It's not like _I_ did all that to them!" She was a bit
defensive.
"I'm not saying you did," J'nus replied, setting aside the leg. "But
I've never seen a chair fall to bits after coming out from /between/
before. Crack, yes, but not fall apart. Was it really humid where you
came from?"
The Weyrwoman laughed. "Far Island? I should say so. Why? What would
humidity have to do with the spilt?"
"Wood will absorb the moisture in the air, and when the humidity
changes suddenly it can warp, or crack. Going /between/ with the
sudden temperature change wouldn't help for the same reason." He
shrugged. "The air here is dry, which wouldn't have helped. I bet
that the way that it was tied to the rest of your luggage put a
strain on it, which snapped it. Quite frankly, I'm suprirised that
you've got all the bits."
"I told you - I love this set." She sighed and leaned against the
table the fragments had been set on. "It doesn't look good, does it?"
"Oh, I can fix it. It'll just take some time and a lot of glue."
"Wonderful!" Corvera nearly jumped across the gap between them and
hugged him - instead she flashed the brightest smile she'd had since
coming to Dragonsfall and sighed a little. "Now I won't be
disinherited from my family - or at least, not for this." She joked,
glowing over the good news.
"I'm glad to have saved you that, at least," J'nus said, smiling
back. It was hard not to - her good mood was infectious. "Although
your "not for this" makes me sharding curious."
The Weyrwoman's eyes sparkled. "My family tends to be more...
conservative than I am. Let's just say the life of a goldrider isn't
exactly what my parents had in mind for their little girl."
"Sometimes life chooses us," J'nus said quietly. Then, "So what did
they want you to do?"
"Settle down with the son of one of their business partners." **Why
am I telling him all this; surely it's not appropriate...** "Be the
lady they raised me to be."
"Oh? What sort of business?"
The Weyrwoman half smiled at the man - he was intriguing no doubt.
"Trades, mostly. My father and his are both fairly successful
merchants in the Far Island area... And it's hardly fair that you
know so much about me and I so little about you."
The bronzerider shrugged and leaned his hip against the table, which
moved about an inch. Maybe that wasn't such a good idea... "There
isn't much worth telling. I was part of a Trader family before I
Impressed. I figured that if your folks were merchants, I might have
heard of them or passed on their goods. What did they produce?"
Corvera tried her best to hide her laughter at his blunder. "They
started out trading gems and precious stones, but eventually they
began trading other goods like metals and glasswork and just about
everything else that comes out of Smith Hall. What does your family
trade?"
"Anything they can get their hands on," he said, grinning. "That's
Traders for you."
"Indeed it is." An uncomfortable silence fell into the conversation.
"Shall I stop by later this sevenday to check on the chair?"
"Please do." The bronzerider grinned. "Or earlier. I can show you how
to fix furniture... just in case."
"Very funny."
J'nus grinned and began picking up the pieces of the chair, using the
seat and backrest as an impromptu basket. "Suit yourself," he said,
"but if you're curious, my door is open."
"Maybe I'll just have to make use of it one day... But for now, thank
you. I'm so pleased about the chair."
"Don't thank me yet. I haven't done anything." He balanced the last
piece in his arms and let Corvera lead him to the door. "Wait until
you've seen the finished product before you say anything."
"Fair enough."
J'nus had to wait for the Weyrwoman to open the door for him since
his arms were full. He nodded politely as he stepped over the
threshhold. "Have a good evening then, Weyrwoman."
