Talerin had never had to worry about 'will I know how to take care of a
dragon', especially not after Talwynn had been so grievously injured. He'd
taken on a lot of the responsibility for Riveth to help ease her worries,
and as a result the green trusted him and he felt well-versed in dragon
care. Today he was catching up with his sister via their new tradition of
bathing Riveth the day before Threadfall, somethat that had started after
she'd returned to active duty.
Now that Chioneth's eggs were on the sands, he knew he had to make a
decision soon about what to do with Vivace if he Impressed this time. He'd
had a plan in mind the last few hatchings involving their mother, but now,
all of a sudden, she really wasn't interested in the idea of taking on a
feline. Even though she'd been fine with it the last few times!
He'd been trying to figure out how to bring it up to Talwynn for a few
days. He was worried his sister would laugh in his face about the idea.
Talwynn was always strong and independent. She was always really _nice_ to
Vivace when she dropped by, but she'd never shown interest in a pet of her
own. Not even when the Healers had been encouraging her to get one as part
of her recovery process.
"So I was thinking you could do me a favor," he said, looking over at his
sister.
"What kind of favor?" Talwynn asked. Talerin didn't ask her for favors
often, so her interest was piqued.
"So the eggs are on the sands and the Weyrlingmasters are on us to get our
lives all settled down and wrapped up before we Impress. And there's just
one thing I need to take care of..." he hedged.
Talwynn misinterpreted the way he was pausing as him looking for a very
personal kind of favor. "I am _not_ asking around to find you a girl.
Honestly, if you and Rielle haven't gotten experience yet..."
"We have experience!" he blurted. "That's not what I meant. At all."
"So what did you mean?"
He knew Talwynn could be prickly and resistant to change, so the
Candidate's hopes were to convince her she was doing him a favor and it
wouldn't be much of a disruption to her life at all. He just had to pull
it off successfully...
"I've run into a problem. You know you can't have pets in he weyrling
barracks. And mom doesn't want to take Vivace anymore. So I'm feeling
really stuck," he started off.
"Did she say why not?"
"No, she just said she didn't feel like she could handle it right now." He
rolled his eyes in not at all feigned exasperation. Their mother could be
very fickle. "So I was hoping you'd take her in."
"Me, take care of your feline?" she asked, sounding dubious.
"Well, it wouldn't be _forever_," he told her. "Just as long as I was a
weyrling. I'd take her right back. It wouldn't be trouble at all for you,
I'm sure."
"I don't know the first thing about caring for them."
"She's soft, she's sweet, you know you like her. She sits in your lap
every time you come over, so you're a great fit," he wheedled.
"Playing with her is different from _keeping_ her," Talwynn objected.
The Candidate sighed, and said in a dejected tone, "Our brother will take
her. But that means sending her off to Dolphin Cove, and I'm worried
she'll get lost there, and I won't be able to visit her..."
Seeing his sister's face soften, he went from 'oh pity me' to 'it won't be
so bad' as the tactic. "Look, why don't you try it out? Just take her in
for a couple days and see how it goes, I'm sure you'll be totally smitten
and it won't be a problem. And if it is, then give her back and we'll talk
to T'rin, okay?"
It worked. The greenrider said, "All right, I'll take her in for a
sevenday, just to see."
"I bet you're going to love having her around. And you too, Riveth, right?
It will be great having a visitor in your weyr. You'll see." He patted the
green dragon's flank, feeling enthused about how well that had gone.
"So when am I supposed to do this?" she asked.
"What if I come on over with her and her stuff in two days?" he asked.
"Then you'll have a chance to see what you think. And you could come over
after this and play with her just so she remembers what you smell like."
"All right," Talwynn said again. "What kind of stuff will you be giving me?"
"Well, there's her waste box, and she has her favorite blankets, and
toys..." And he was off, explaining feline care.
