Ma'din

Ma'din

He hadn't met with this Weyrleader on his own thus far, so Ma'din had
little doubts as to what the man wanted to address with his summons.
The battered face that had shown up that very morning in the dining
hall couldn't exactly be hidden, and he'd already faced questions that
were pointedly ignored. Unfortunately he couldn't ignore the
Weyrleader, as much as he'd like to. He doubted he'd enjoy mucking
cesspits. He rapped on the door and waited.

"Come!" called K'reyel. A rider who had been fighting was a liability, and a
danger to the reputation of the weyr, there were enough stories told that
portrayed riders as wild and dangerous. Last thing they needed was someone
who could confirm that.

Striding in, Ma'din met the Weyrleader's gaze expectantly. "So, watch duty
or the longest sweeps?"

"Take a seat, and then you are going to tell me what happened and who gave
you that shiner." K'reyel pointed to the chair across from his desk.

Ma'din took the proffered seat, stretching out his legs and the crossing
them at the ankle. "Its a private matter and was done private too. No
witnesses except our dragons." He gingerly tapped at his swollen lip with a
rueful smirk. " Gave as good as I got, though. Didn't know the old man still
had it in him. "

K'reyel had to admit to himself that the answer given was better than he'd
expected. Given Ma'din's history he'd almost imagined it to be a case of
'walking into a door'. He thought for a moment before speaking.

"Leaving out the fact that it obviously involved your father, which possibly
means I should be speaking to N'vanik about this as well, I'm surprised at
the pair of you. Don't you realise how dangerous it could have been? We
could have lost you both. If you really had to do this, why didn't you ask
for a goldrider to supervise?" Tradition had it that a gold dragon could use
her strength of mind to hold other dragons in place if their riders really
needed to fight.

"And which gold rider? Chioneth is busy with eggs on the sands. Teseada
isn't exactly a fan and that young one, Lanniya?" He snorted derisively.
"She'd be useless. " He tapped at his head. "Besides, wasn't dangerous. 'M
not stupid and neither are our dragons. They knew what was going on. We
wasn't trying to kill each other. It was...a chat we've been needing to have
for turns." He neither confirmed nor denied D'hol's involvement.

K'reyel took a deep breath, it was true that Saibra and Chioneth were
otherwise occupied, but Teseada and Onnyth would have more than held their
own, and he clearly didn't know Lanniya and her gold Anaeryth. "The fact
that this was 'coming' is irrelevant. It is going to have to be noted on
your record. First up, I want you to see the healers, I need to know that no
hidden permanent damage was done. Then, subject to you being passed fit for
duty, you have the next two sevendays of watch duty, at night. I think you
could do with some thinking time."

Ma'din arched a brow, but didn't object. It wasn't as if he hadn't had watch
duty before as a punishment and going to the healers wasn't exactly a chore
either. He had known that the "chat" with D'hol was going to have
consequences. He'd been expecting worse. "You going to N'vanik?"

"Is there some reason I shouldn't?" asked K'reyel. If there was an answer,
it might tell him something more about what happened and why.

Ma'din studied K'reyel, eyes slightly narrowed. There was absolutely no
reason for him to have any loyalty towards D'hol. None. He doubted what he
had been told was general knowledge and he could really stick it to the old
man, get a final lick in, if he opened his mouth. But, if he did that, how
would it effect him trying to see his sister? He missed the little squirt
and in truth, Kielya was the only family that he really felt he had. All
D'hol had to do was talk to Saibra or Cyradis. Deciding to act in his own
self-interests, Ma'din spoke. "Yeah. It's a family matter." Equating D'hol
and family twisted his guts a bit, but strangely not as much as it had
before. " 'Sides, N'vanik probably already knows."

"I'll take that under advisement," K'reyel said. Although mental notes were
being made. Clearly there was more to the incident, and N'vanik might be
able to get to the bottom of what was making the rider in front of him more
edgy than normal.

At that, Ma'din shrugged. Anything else was D'hol's problem, not his. He
leaned back in his seat, hands folded over his stomach. "Up to you."

"I expect to hear from the healers before the end of the day. And if you are
fit for duty, then I expect to see you standing watch tonight." K'reyel was
making it clear that this discussion was now over.

Ma'din rose slowly, feeling a bit sore as he moved, but not enormously
irritated by the whole affair. His record was already mottled at best and
another mark against him wasn't going to do much of anything. What would
D'ale do that K'reyel hadn't? Spank him? He carefully hid a smirk at the
thought. He fully expected to be able to pull watch, so planned ahead for a
long nap after visiting the healers. "You'll hear from them." His salute and
half-bow was just barely respectful enough to not be mocking. "Weyrleader."

K'reyel watched the brownrider. }:Erdenth, remind me later to check up on
this one, and to send a note to N'vanik,:{ he asked of his dragon.
