Danrina

Danrina

"Come now, Dalvina, let's enjoy the sun for a bit," Danrina said to
the child. She held a basket and a blanket over her arm, all while
holding the wiggling girl as well. Trying to keep hold of all the
pieces and spread out the blanket was a bit of a challenge, especially
when Jem chose that very moment to land on Danrina's arm. It was
enough to cause them all to lose their balance. Down tumbled the
basket, the blanket and very nearly the baby. Danrina gripped her
tightly to keep both herself and her daughter from tumbling to the
ground.

"Oh, Jem, you silly one," Danrina tried to scold the firelizard, but
her tone and her smile showed that she was not truly angry. She loved
the green firelizard that was a gift from her own love.

Sitting Dalvina down, Danrina finally got the blanket spread out. Then
sitting on the blanket, she placed Dalvina down to play. Jem darted
around the young child who squealed and giggled with glee. Jem was one
of her favorite 'toys' to play with. When she managed to catch Jem's
tail, the firelizard quickly let go and zipped away to the far side of
the blanket. The firelizard had grown to understand the young child,
but still often got frightened when she got caught.

The little boy watched from behind a tree as the green firelizard
flitted about, playing with the baby on the blanket. He wanted to play
with a firelizard. There weren't too many at the Seahold who looked to
people and the ones that did were kept too busy carrying messages or
were too busy sunning themselves to play with him. This one looked
like it liked to play though. He wondered if he could entice it away
from the blanket and the baby and the lady who was pulling items out
of the basket. They liked to eat, he knew that and with that in mind,
the little boy ran inside and grabbed a leftover sausage roll from the
kitchen.

Once he was back at his spot behind the tree, the boy carefully tore
the roll into small chunks and, taking careful aim, threw one toward
the blanket. If he could get the little green's attention, without the
lady noticing, maybe it would work.

As Danrina was busy with her daughter, Jem flitted around, trying to
stay out of reach of Dalvina for the moment. The little green
firelizard flew in a circle and caught sight of an object in the air
that landed a short distance away. Curious, Jem flew towards the
object. Sniffing the air, she smelled something that caught her
attention as well. The little flit landed just a hop away from the
meat. Glancing around, she jumped and quickly gulped up the morsel of
food.

The little boy jumped with happiness as the little green firelizard
took the morsel. It worked! It worked! Quickly he stopped himself
though, remembering that he was meant to be hiding and jumping up and
down wasn't very sneaky. He tossed another bit of meatroll out, trying
to make it fall a bit closer to the tree than the previous one had.

Jem saw the meat fly and quickly half jumped and flew towards it,
eager for a snack. Her little head darted around, looking for more and
trying to find out where it had come from.

Suppressing a squeal of happiness that wanted to crawl out of his
throat, but which would surely give him away, the little boy tossed
another bit of food.

Jem eagerly caught the morsel almost before it hit the ground. She had
landed close enough for the boy to reach her. The little fire lizard
turned her eyes eagerly towards the child. Sniffing the air, she
sensed more food and began to walk and hop towards the boy.

Barely able to contain his glee, the little boy held out one of the
last bits of food he held, hoping that the fascinating creature would
take it from his fingers.

Jem did more than just take it from his fingers. She hopped up onto
his wrist and reached down to snatch up the tasty morsel. Then she
turned hopeful eyes towards the boy as if asking for more. She let out
a soft chirping sound.

The little boy breathed a soft and incredulous, "Oh," as the
firelizard perched on his arm. He couldn't resist the look the little
green gave and held out his other hand, with the last few bits of the
meatroll. "Here," he whispered, not wanting to frighten her away or
attract attention from the woman still on her blanket nearby.

Jem gave a happy chirp. Moving her talons, she inched closer to the
food, reached out her neck and gobbled down each piece of meatroll.
She liked this new friend who had filled her belly. She titled her
head to look at him once more. She chirped again as her way of saying
thanks. This was a nice break from the play with the little one. It
was quieter and Jem decided to sit on the arm for a few moments longer
to enjoy the quiet.

"Hello," the little boy whispered. "My name is Porren. You sure are a
pretty firelizard." He reached up carefully to pet the little green
sitting on his arm, worried she might fly away if she moved too fast.

Jem twitched nervously, contemplating disappearing as the child reach
to touch her. He had been so nice to feed her, yet what if he grabbed
her. Nervously she clenched her claws on his arm as she waited to see
if she needed to disappear if she sensed danger. So far she only
sensed curiosity and good thoughts. That was the only reason she
stayed where she was for the moment.

Very gently, the little boy traced a finger along the firelizard's
neck, along the little ridges there, "You're soft," he said in wonder.

Jem was close to flitting away when his finger touched her. He was
gentle. His thoughts did not bother her. She decided she would remain
for a few moments more. She chirped her pleasure as his gentle touch.

Porren gently ran his fingertips along the green firelizard's side,
trying not to bump into the wing. Petting a firelizard seemed
complicated! But, she was so soft and pretty, "Do you like that?"

Jem gave a soft, almost purring sound at the gentle rub to let the boy
know he was doing just fine. Just then a voice full of laughter caught
the firelizard's attention. Turning it's head towards where it had
come from, Jem chirpped. Just as quickly as she had come, she was
gone. The little green firelizard flew through the air back to the
family it had left behind.
