Once Devren had gone Sophque turned around and went to her cupboard to
pull out a treat for Copper. "Well aren't you looking handsome," she
said as she brought her little bowl to the table.
The little brown floated effortlessly down from his perch on top of
the hutch to the table. He looked up at her expectantly and gave a
small chirp.
"How are you doing," she asked. Then she uncovered the bowl and tossed
a piece into the air the way she'd seen Morin toss tidbits to the
little flit.
Copper stood on his back legs and caught the treat expertly, his eyes
whirling happily as he cocked his head to the side as if to say
**Isn't there more?**
She chuckled as her mind filled with happy memories and she flipped
piece after piece to the little flit. But finally, she was tired. She
reached out to caress tiny eyeridges for a moment. "I need to sleep,"
she said. And soon she was in her bed next to her daughter. Her eyes
drooped closed.
~~~Begin dream~~~
She walked along the beach with the boom of surf and a lowering sky.
She was searching for him again.
A voice, strong in tamber but gentle in tone, came from behind her.
"What are you looking for?"
She smiled without turning her head. "You, as always," she said. "But
I can only find you here." She gave a rather large sigh, "I really
hate the sea."
"Then why do you look for me here?" the voice asked softly in her ear.
"Surely you can find me in much more pleasant places."
"Can I," she asked and the scene changed to his room in the middle of
the night. "I like this much better," she said softly and turned
toward his place on the bed with a smile. "I miss you," she said.
"You can always find me here," he reminded her as his arm slipped
under her head to cradle her close.
She slipped into the comfort of his arms one hand threading through
the brown and grey hairs on his chest. "I have tried to find you here
before," she said softly "but it's getting harder and harder to see
you." She gazed up at green eyes that were about the only clear thing
on his face, the rest seemed to be impressions, faded at the edges.
But his voice and the intelligence in his eyes were still as clear as
a spring day.
His fingers trailed up the line of her arm. "Do you need to look for
me any more? Aren't you moving on with your life?" The question was
in no way an accusation. Just a statement of fact.
She hated it when anyone answered a question with a question but in
this case, she couldn't help herself. "Is that alright with you? You
know that I loved you with my whole heart."
But questions filled her thoughts, and so his answer was in kind.
"What would you have done if I had lived? Been my mistress forever?
Even after I took a wife and started a family of my own?"
"I would have been as long as you wanted." She thought for a moment
and began to tell him about Devren and how she wanted to make a good
home for Sophine with a decent man who would take care of them. "He's
a nice man and I like him."
"'Like'?" he asked, catching quickly onto that word. "Is 'like'
enough for you?"
"Like? Yes, that is more than I thought to hope for. It's more than
most women have. Besides, I already had love and I don't think I can
find that again in a hundred turns."
He rolled her, settling on top of her to look straight down into her
eyes. "Did I ever deny you anything? Didn't I always provide for
you, even when you didn't ask for it? If you had told me our daughter
wanted for anything, did I not give it to you freely?"
"You always provided everything we needed," she agreed. Then her
throat seemed to close for a moment with a lump the size of a ship
fish. Her eyes blurred with tears and she could hardly see him. She
took a shuddering breath... "When you were alive."
"Then don't you think I would want you to be provided for now? If
what he can give you is what you and our daughter needs, why would I
have ever denied you that even when I _was_ alive?" A thumb caressed
away a cascading tear as he said softly, "Be happy, Sophque. That's
all I would want."
~~End Dream~~
"Thank you," she whispered into the dark
