One of Those

Writers: AmajoS, Paula
Date Posted: 27th February 2019

Characters: Corowal, Saranni
Description: Not-so-conincidental meeting between a young woman and a Lord Holder.
Location: Emerald Falls Hold
Date: month 9, day 9 of Turn 9

Saranni spotted the Lord Holder in conversation with someone at the
other end of the hallway and paused to wait for them to finish and
separate. She had hoped to run into the man like this as opposed to a
more formal introduction, because she felt that it would allow her to
see truer reactions to any conversation they might have. A more formal
introduction would be between the Lord Holder and a high born guest,
it would be polite and distant. Not what she wanted for a first
impression.

She had considered her attire carefully before taking to the halls to
'explore her new home.' She hadn't brought her very best dresses with
her on dragonback, they would arrive with the rest of her things in a
few days, but the ones she had picked were very well suited to her in
both color and style. She had decided to go with a a simple
arrangement of hair and minimal jewelry, only a simple string of
pearls.

Her mother had cautioned her against being too flashy or extravagant.
His most recent wife had been a beauty, but the rumors were that she
had not loved him nor him her. It would not do to remind the man of
that Lady. His first wife had been plainer, but he had loved her
greatly, it was said. While Saranni herself was not exactly beautiful,
she was not plain. However, limiting her outfit would help make that
impression while still flattering her. She hoped anyway.

"I trust your ability to deal with it," Corowal told the young
assistant steward and sent him on his way. Deep in his thoughts, he
turned to return back to his office, when he almost ran into a young
woman. Since Felyna's death, the number of them in the Hold was ever
increasing.

"Oh, forgive me, miss," Corowal reached out with his hand to steady
her. "I should look where I'm going."

Saranni offered a smile, the one her mother said was very sweet to
look at. Like her sisters, her mother had her practice different
smiles for different occasions. "That's quite alright, my Lord," she
dipped into a quick and graceful curtsy. "I shouldn't be lingering in
hallways. I only just arrived and felt the need to explore a bit,
Emerald Falls is quite lovely."

**Oh, Faranth, one more of those!** Corowal groaned inside, but his
expression remained polite. "I'm glad you like my Hold, Lady?" he
waited her to provide a name.

"Saranni, my Lord," she inclined her head. "And I do. I haven't been
here long enough to explore it all, of course. I did notice the new
Harper Hall building from dragonback," she added. She'd been a student
at the Hall when she was younger. "I was very pleased when I heard the
Hall had been welcomed back to the Hold, I hope to pay them a visit
while I'm here."

"Yes, the new Hall building is worth a see. They really put some
thought in it," Corowal replied. "Good acoustics too," Corowal had
always enjoyed arts.

"I hope I'll have a chance to experience the acoustics myself. I was a
student at the Hall when I was younger, before it moved to the Weyr."
She and her sisters had been recalled home only a little before the
arson attack. Her father hadn't wanted their reputations to be tainted
by the association with crafting females and decided the skills
weren't worth the risk. He'd hired harpers to come to their minor hold
instead after that. She had been very bitter about it, when she was
younger, as she felt she was a better player and singer than half the
harpers she knew, even as a child. But, considering the upheaval that
happened after she had gone home, it had likely been for the best
then.

Now, if she was successful, she would be within walking distance of
the Hall for the rest of her life. It was apparent that the Lord
Holder had an affinity for the craft, she hoped she'd be able to use
that to pique his interest over time.

"They arrange concerts rather regularly," Corowal told her. "They
usually put up a poster when they do, so keep an eye on the walls."

Offering a small, pleased smile, Saranni replied, "I will, and thank
you, my Lord."

"You're welcome, m'lady," Corowal replied. He was thinking though,
that if she liked music so much, he just might ask her to company him
to one of those concerts.

She was feeling very pleased with how this first interaction between
them had gone. They had a mutual interest that she didn't even have to
feign and, with time, she hoped to nurture this tiny seed and see it
blossom. She didn't want to press her luck too soon, however. "I won't
keep you from your important business any longer, my Lord. Though, I
do hope we have the chance to speak again soon."

She wasn't as bad as some others, she wasn't overly pushy and she had
actually been pleasant to talk with. So, Corowal flashed her a genuine
smile and replied: "I hope you'll have a pleasant day. It was nice
talking with you."

She dipped into a curtsy and gave him a small, pleased smile in return
as she walked by, Inside she was dancing down the hall instead of
walking demurely. It had gone so well! Better than she could have
hoped. She couldn't wait to write home to her mother.
