What's His Name?

Writers: AmajoS, Eimi
Date Posted: 2nd February 2019

Characters: T'min, Kaiafel
Description: Temmin gets a little help from a fellow Candidate. If only he could remember the boy's name.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 9, day 1 of Turn 9
Notes: Mentioned: Anndil, J'nev

Temmin stood in the doorway of the dining cavern looking for Anndil
and not seeing him anywhere. Him or any of the other few people whose
names and faces he knew. He also didn't see very many empty seats.
Maybe he'd come back later, when it wasn't so full of people, and grab
something to eat. That decided, he turned around to leave and nearly
walked right into someone. He recognized the younger boy from a few of
the classes he'd been to so far, but they hadn't spoken yet and he
couldn't remember the boy's name either.

"Hey Temmin," Kaiafel said cheerfully as he stopped in his tracks
before he could run into him. "How's the lunch today?"

Well, shards. Of course the other boy remembered -his- name. "I
haven't, I mean there's no where to sit. I was going to come back and
grab a snack later." He was hungry and the food did smell good, but it
wouldn't be the first time he'd settled for a meatroll and a hurried
cup of klah later in the day. He used to do it all the time back home,
though, that was because he was usually too busy to eat. He had an
entire hour to eat here, but no desire to awkwardly settle into a
table full of strangers to do it.

"What?" Kaiafel couldn't believe that was true. The caverns could
hold the whole Weyr and all the guests for the Hatching besides after
a Hatching. How could it be full on a regular lunch day? He peeked
his head inside. "Naw, I see some seats open. Come on."

Following the irrepressible younger boy - whose name he still couldn't
remember, -why- did he have to be such a dimglow - Temmin entered the
dining cavern. He was glad he'd run into the boy because from inside,
the food smelled even better and his stomach actually gave a rumble.
However, at some point he was going to have let on that he'd forgotten
the other boy's name and he didn't look forward to that conversation.
He glowered a bit, worrying about it as they approached the line for
food trays.

"I would avoid the pies if I were you. I'm pretty sure they're left
over from yesterday." At least when Kaiafel peeked his head into the
kitchens earlier, he hadn't seen any fresh ones baking.

Startled out of his brooding, Temmin protested, "Leftover pies are still pies."

"Hey, if you like day old pies, I'm not going to stop you from taking
them. Me, I'm going for the sausage rolls and beef stew. I know
those were made today." He leaned over conspiratorially. "I actually
stole a couple off the tray in the kitchen earlier."

It wasn't that he liked day old pies over much, but why waste food?
Plus, if they weren't eaten today, they'd just put them out again
tomorrow. Or at least that's what the cooks back home would have done.
"Maybe I'll have a pie and some stew," he replied with a bit of a
grin. Then he asked, "Stole a couple of what?"

"Sausage rolls. They're the spicy kind. My favorite! Here, try
one," Kaiafel said as he grabbed one off the stack and put it on
Temmin's plate. "Trust me, you'll thank me. Oooo, look, they have
the good bread today. I need some of that, too. Extra stew for me,
please," he said to the young serving woman with his most charming
smile.

"Kaiafel, where are you going to fit all that food?" she asked with an
amused shake of her head, though she made sure to fill his bowl to the
top.

He wasn't phased. "I'll fit it, don't worry. Can you give my friend
extra, too?"

Temmin was so relieved to have the younger boy's name without having
had to ask for it he hadn't even noticed Kaiafel ordering food for him
at first. But then, he remembered his resolution and quickly blurted,
"I'll have a pie too! I mean, please."

"Yeah, we'll both take pies," Kaiafel said and then looked over at the
other boy. "They're not great, but I'm starving and this isn't nearly
enough."

Blinking at the amount of food on the younger boy's tray, Temmin just
nodded. But, he knew what it was like, feeling like a hollow leg
sometimes. Food was more plentiful at the Weyr so it wasn't a hardship
like it was back home most of the time. "Where will we sit?" There
were several tables with two empty seats, but not many with more than
that, meaning they'd have to sit right next to someone.

"There's a couple over there next to..." Kaiafel recognized the face
of bronzerider J'nev. Ew. "On second though, that's not good. How
about... Over there," he said with point of his nose. "Four tables
back right on the end. It looks like those riders are leaving."

Temmin nodded agreeably, glad that he'd run into the younger
candidate. It seemed he was lucky. "Looks good."
