Sophque

Turns Beginning had been wonderful. It had been Turns since Devren
had enjoyed a woman's company so much! But once the night was over,
and only the memory of that tender kiss remained, came the hardest
part. Now what? They had established that there was something there.
Some kind of spark. But it had been easy to find an excuse to run
into her at Turns End. Now he had to actually find a reason to see
her... on purpose!

Devren had looked for excuses for days, but they all seemed lame.
**Look, I found this coin. Did you happen to drop it?** **Oh! I
delivered this cloth to the wrong cot. Oops!** There was no reason
he could think of that didn't make him seem like an adolescent fool.

So then he tried watching for her from his window, but not once did
she pass by. He looked for her in the dinning hall, but she didn't
seem to take her meal there. Devren even would go out of his way to
walk past her cot on this way to do business on the off chance he
would run into her. No such luck.

"Right," he finally said one afternoon when the sun was shinning
bright in the sky. "It's time to be a man."

Standing straight in front of his mirror, he combed his fingers
through his hair and then ran a lint brush over his tunic just to be
sure. Wait, was that really his best color? "Gastel!" he called to
the boy in the other room.

"Yeah?" a head asked, peeking around the corner and still chewing on
the piece of redfruit he had in his mouth.

"How do I look?" Devren asked, holding his arms wide so his young
assistant could get a full view.

Gastel shrugged. "Like you always look."

Devren's mouth scrunched into a grimace momentarily. "I mean, do I look good?"

The boy still wasn't following. "As compared to what?"

**Gastel, you will be the death of me,** the merchant sighed, digging
the heels of his hands into his eyes lest he loose his cool. "Gastel,
I want to call on a lady. Are there any stains or rips? Does this
color suit me? Do you think I should change?"

"Oh," Gastel said, finally catching on. He gave Devren a quick up and
down. "No."

"Great," Devren said with a relieved smile. But then he realized that
he had asked a string of questions. "Wait. Which question were you
answering there?"

"Uh..." Gastel scratched his head a moment. "Could you repeat them?"

"Oh forget it," Devren said, throwing up his hands. "I will just go
out like this and hope for the best." He made a mental note not to
ask Gastel for help picking out clothes in the future!

She heard the knock on the door and opened it with a questioning look
that turned into a smile as soon as she saw who it was. "Devren," she
smiled. "How are you?"

Devren returned her smile with a grin. He could feel his heart
thumping in his chest. "Very well, thank you. It's a lovely day
today, isn't it?"

She peered outside. "It is beautiful," she said shading her eyes. She
knew better than to invite him inside her home with so many people
about so she stepped out on her porch smiling. She was actually
pleased to see him so soon after their first date.

"Yes, it's a lovely day today." His smile faltered only slightly when
he realized he had repeated the same thing twice, and gave himself a
mental swift kick in the pants. "So, I was wondering if you might
like to take a walk this afternoon. With me."

"I would love to take a walk with you this afternoon," she smiled.

"Are you free now or do you need me to come back?"

"Give me just a few minutes," she said. "And I can be free. I'll be right back."
