So Perfect...

Writers: Len, Eimi
Date Posted: 27th January 2018

Characters: Kaiafel, Camira
Description: Kaiafel has a crush...
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 2, day 9 of Turn 9

Kaiafel bit his lip as he hid behind the rock, just watching as the
young girl threw a pebble into one of the small creeks that fed into
the summer Weyrlake. He noticed that her hair was the same color as
the exposed bank across the stream from her. Her fingers were long
and graceful as she reached behind her to pull her hair back over her
should, exposing her neck and ear. Just looking at that glimpse of
bare skin made him sigh, though he wasn't quite sure why.

He wanted her to turn around so he could see those bright blue eyes
and that smile. But he couldn't just call her name. That was dumb.
He could wait until she walked by the rock and jump out and scare her.
But that might make her mad. Besides, she would know that he cared
enough to wait for her.

Looking around, he saw a decent sized stone at his feet. He could
throw that pretty far, he was sure. Maybe he could hit her in the
back and then she'd turn around! But he might miss and then he'd look
stupid. Or he might hit her in the head and then she'd for sure be
angry. But he could throw it in the water and maybe it would make a
big splash and then he'd look cool! Yeah!

Kaiafel picked up the stone and scrambled to the top of the boulder he
had been hiding behind. Taking aim, he threw the stone as hard as he
could, but it overshot the stream by far and just ended up hitting a
tree with a crack and a thud, pulling her attention to the sound and
not to him.

**Flaming tunnelsnake turds,** Kaiafel silently cursed, but he
instantly froze when suddenly and without warning turned to look over
her shoulder. **Shells!** His first instinct was to duck, but he was
on top of a sharding boulder! Where could he hide?! He was caught.
All he could do now was play it cool.

"So... You heard that, too, eh?" he asked, making a show of looking
off in the direction of where the stone had landed.

Camira raised a perfectly shaped eyebrow and flashed him a grin. "What
are you doing, hiding in the woods, throwing stones at trees? Why
throw them at trees when there's a perfectly nice lake to toss them
into?"

Kaiafel shrugged as if he didn't really care that he had been caught
throwing stones. "Why throw a stone at a lake? It's an easy target.
It just sits there. But to hit a tree from this distance takes
skill."

She raised an eyebrow and shifted her weight, her face showing that
she was thinking that logic over. "Well...okay. But why did you happen
to pick the tree I was just in front of?" Her delicate fingers played
with the helm of her tunic as she spoke.

"I knew I could hit it. You were never in any danger." The lie
seemed to come out easy, just like the smug look of satisfaction as he
crossed his arms across his chest. "I haven't seen you since
graduation." Another lie. He was constantly aware of where she was
when they were in the same place. "What have you been up to?"

The guarded look in her eyes at his words about hitting the tree
disappeared when he asked that. Her entire face lit up. "I've been
apprenticed to the technician! Though..." and her face crumpled.
"He's_so_mean. Like really really mean, meaner than our Harper teacher
was." She rolled her eyes.

"That mean, eh?" Kaiafel's brow furrowed as he frowned. How could
anyone be mean to Camira? She was so smart, so friendly, so...
perfect! "Who's your Master?" he asked, jumping down off the rock in
front of her.

"Master Jacarni, you know, that old man who's always fussing at the
kitchen help." She shuddered, remembered her days as kitchen help.
"Here I thought he was unbearable when I was there, it just didn't
occur to me that he was the very man I have to apprentice to. Why
couldn't they have given me to Llecana? She's_so_nice and all the
girls under her are so much happier." She sighed dramatically.

Master Jacarni had a reputation of being a brilliant technician, and
was well liked from every account he had heard. But that didn't
matter. His lady had been wronged by him, and therefore he was as
odious as she reported. If not worse! Kaiafel wracked his brains to
think of some support for her point of view in his own experience.
There seemed none. And yet he could not fail her by saying as much.
"He's just jealous of you. He can tell you're smarter than he is.
Everyone knows how smart you are. He probably doesn't like it. I
don't think he likes girls at all."

"You think?" Camira blushed and twirled the edge of her tunic around
her fingers.

"Oh yeah," he nodded with an air of complete self-assurance in his
knowledge. "So what does he do?"

"He keeps making me do the same old boring stuff over and over
and_over_again. And clean. He never makes the boys clean, just me."
She rolled her eyes dramatically. "And he makes me stay and watch
Journeywoman Brenta after all the others get to go on their break.
It's_so_unfair!" She stamped her foot.

"That _is_ unfair," Kaiafel agreed. He used a finger to punctuate his
words since that was what people did with him when they were really
mad. "See, I told you, just doesn't like girls. He's just a
hidebound old fool. He's being so... Astute!" In truth, he didn't
know what the word meant, but he knew he had heard it and it sounded
like it had the word "ass" in it, so therefore must fit the situation.

"Yes, astute, that's_exactly_what he is!" Camira nodded her head in
agreement. "I'm_so_glad someone finally sees my side of the problem.
Do you think I should go to the Headwoman about it?"

He took great pleasure in apparently pleasing her. Maybe next time
they were in the same room she would be looking for _him_ instead of
Kaiafel always looking for her. "Yeah, probably. Maybe she can help
you out."

"Okay, I will!" Camira nodded her head, the wind fully in her misplaced sails.

"So..." Kaiafe kicked a stone at his feet towards the waterline
absently. Mostly he wanted an excuse not to look into her eyes as he
asked, "Do you want to go hunt firelizard eggs with me?"

"Firelizards? I've got to talk to the Headwoman, I don't have time for
silly things like flits!" And with that she was off, a blur of long
blond hair and misplaced self righteousness.

"Yeah, me neither, I just..." What was the use. She was already
gone. A scattering of sand flew up in the air as Kaiafel gave the
ground a great kick in frustration. **Stupid! What girl wants to dig
around in the sand looking for eggs!** And now she thought he was
just a dumb kid... Kaiafel crumpled to the ground and wrapped his
arms around his knees, staring off in the direction she had walked off
in. If only she wasn't so sharding... perfect...
