K'reyel

Tavia took a deep breath before she knocked on the Weyrleaders door.
She had questions about things she obviously shouldn't know and had
learned by accident. While she could have gone to Saibra, her first
thought was the Weyrleader.

She nodded to herself that her decision was the right one and knocked.

"Come," called out the Weyrleader. He wasn't really expecting anyone,
Mai would have called his name through the door, and Saibra likely
would have sent a message through Erdenth.

"Sir," Tavia said as she came in the door. "I think I need to talk to
you about something that I overheard tonight. It's... well I don't
understand it "

"I see," K'reyel gestured to a seat opposite his, wondering what it
was that clearly seemed to have perturbed the greenrider so much that
she had come to him over Saibra or Teseada, given she wore the knots
of Sienna. "It's Tavia, isn't it?"

"Yes sir," she said. "You know Weyrleader U'kaiah?" She wanted to make
sure they started with an understanding of the situation.

"Not personally, but I know of him." That was enough to make him
wonder, was she about to request a transfer elsewhere because of a
bronzerider?

She nodded figuring it was enough. "I had a son with him and he has
another son, Kaiafel here at the Weyr whose mother is a foster mother in the
lower caverns. The older boy just graduated his Harper classes and
though his father promised to be there he didn't show. So I went to
find him. I was pretty angry with him."

Maybe this was a disciplinary matter, thought K'reyel. He didn't think
the greenrider was the type to have made a public scene, but if she
had, and it had involved a Weyrleader elsewhere and his Weyrwoman.
that would not have been pretty and he could understand being sent
straight back with orders to report immediately to her own Weyrleader.

"And?" he prompted, hoping that it wasn't going to involve trouble of any sort.

She shook her head and sighed "When I got there, I heard raised voices
so I stopped and listened. It was Hygalia and U'kaiah." She spread her
hands. "I know them both well and they were fighting." She was a bit
ashamed of having listened in but that was only the half of it. A
slight blush crept up her cheeks. "I guess Hygalia had made Genith
ground Kalamath so they couldn't /between/ times."

That was not what he was expecting in the slightest. Normally green
and blueriders were not told of the ability that dragons had for
various reasons, among them being the danger of it. That and the need
to be able to remember precise locations and star or sun positions.
Not all of the smaller dragons would be able to do that, and it was
not a reflection on their other skills at all.

K'reyel took a deep breath. "Did you hear more? Or did either of them
tell you more?"

"U'kaiah did when I questioned him about it." She took a deep breath.
"He told me it was very dangerous and I should never try to do it
myself."

"I see," K'reyel thought he was beginning to understand. "Did he tell
you of all the dangers?" he asked after a moment. Surely she'd noticed
how 'off' it would make him seem if he was timing it somewhere.

"I don't think so," she said. "We didn't really have time. He was
missing his son's reception and we had to go so there wasn't a lot of
time. That's why I came to you." Tavia had always been a responsible
person and didn't think her knowledge should be hidden from the
leaders.

The Weyrleader took a deep breath, it managed to be both a better, and
a worse situation that he'd hoped for. Better in that there was no
discipline needed, but worse in that he needed to explain about
timing, the dangers of it and also inform Saibra or Teseada to have
them make sure that the dragon could understand exactly what her rider
had been told. "I will explain this, but I will have to ask one of the
goldriders here to have their dragon speak to yours, to make sure she
understands too." That should make sure that Tavia knew how serious
this was.

"Yes sir," she said with a sigh of relief. She'd spent time pacing in
her weyr and worrying about how to deal with the knowledge she wasn't
really supposed to have. "Thank you."

"This is what you need to know," K'reyel began.
