She's Doing Well

Writers: Avery, Heather

Description: Talwynn talks to D'kere about how firestone delivery has been going.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 9 of Turn 9
Notes: Mentioned: Saibra

Now that Talwynn was _delivering_ firestone to the wings, she was more
tired at the end of Fall days. Flying messaging runs or in practice
drills were easy for someone who'd been a rider awhile, but appearing
into a Fall zone, throwing sacks, and dodging falling Thread was
entirely different. It wasn't as hard as actual combat, but it was more
than she had been doing before.

After the day's Fall, she scrubbed Riveth down, went back to her weyr to
get clean clothes, and took a long soak in one of the bathing pools that
was less-frequented. She wanted a chance to sit quietly with her own
thoughts and sort them out before it was evening.

After a half-candlemark she climbed out of the pool, got changed, and
then headed down to the kitchens. Then she requested food to go out of
the kitchen workers, and started carrying the trays back to D'kere's
weyr. She didn't know if he'd be back yet or not. Either way, she hoped
he appreciated her bringing dinner.

For D'kere, 'fall was never really over when 'fall ended. As the
Weyrlingmaster's Second, D'kere's first priority upon returning to the
Weyr was a thorough check of all Weyrlings and their dragons. Sometimes
this went quickly, and other times it went slowly. Tonight had taken a
little longer because he'd had to console a youngster who'd been near an
adult dragon that had gone /between/, forever, from a Thread-related
injury. After that, he'd still needed to bath and clean up, which he had
the luxury of doing at his own weyr.

"I was just about to ask if you wanted me to grab dinner," D'kere said
as he came out of his bathing room, towel still slung around his waist,
his eyes appraising Talwynn as she entered with the food.

"I know you have more to do than I do after Threadfall, so I thought I'd
get it," the greenrider said as she settled the trays down. "The good
thing is that I made it to the kitchens before all the prime food had
been served out already."

D'kere crossed over to his wardrobe and pulled out a pair of linen
lounge pants. It was finally warm enough around Dragonsfall to loose
some of the fur and fleece lined clothing. "Yeah, I had an emotional
girl to deal with today. She was in the air beside of Urayth when they
went /between/."

"I remember N'talas and Urayth, we were candidates together but he
Impressed later," she said with a frown. They'd been on the ground
resupplying when it happened and Riveth had keened at the loss. "Was she
one of the holdbred weyrlings?"

"Yes, she was." D'kere tossed on a shirt and then joined Talwynn at the
table. "How was 'fall for you?"

"It was good. Delivered to all of the wings today. And for the whole
Fall, too." She'd noticed that the first two times she'd only been
assigned to resupply the low and mid altitude wings. As for duration,
since she wasn't actively flying the whole thing but was doing quick
deliveries and then resting for periods and restocking, it wasn't the
same half-length limitation normally had for greens.

"Riveth still wants to flame Thread to protect herself, though. Keeping
a handle on that has been hard."

"It is hard to fight that instinct." D'kere agreed, Kenirath always had
to fight it because when they flew it was to guide Weyrlings and assist
them in making deliveries and such, not to actually flame thread. "How's
your leg?" He asked as he picked up his fork.

"It's not as tired as it was the first two days. The additional
strapping has been helping with that. Same with the warmer weather." She
had resolved not to worry about winter, since it was half a Turn away.

"I think I'm doing well overall."

D'kere smiled, and reached out to touch her hand, "I think you're doing
well too. I'm proud of you."

She turned her hand into his touch and squeezed his. "I'm hoping if I
keep making consistent deliveries to the wings and keeping up on all
responsibilities that it will provide evidence to a Wingleader that I
could come back."

"They'll probably want to see you load and flame, too." D'kere reasoned,
but he knew that she and Riveth had practiced.

"Probably. I'm thinking of asking the Weyrwoman, first. The Queen's wing
is used to transitioning injured riders back to flight, after all. But
I'm a bit nervous about approaching her. If she says no, I'm sure all
the other Wingleaders would too."

"That's true, and a good plan. I can't imagine she will, but you never
know."

"It's not a common request I'm making. Usually when the Healers retire
you, it sticks. Oh, I need to go talk to them again," she remembered.
The Healer had made her promise to get looked at just to make sure the
extra stress wasn't causing renewed issues.

"I _want_ to beat the odds, and so far I have. I just worry it won't be
enough," she admitted.

D'kere reached beneath the table and squeeze her knee. "We'll worry
about that, when it happens, for right now, let's celebrate the small
victories."

He was right about that. "I suppose you have something in mind?"

"Of course," D'kere winked and tilted his head back to the hearth where
some bottles of lotion and oil were warming by the fire.

She grinned at him. "I think I see where this is going."

"This is your night, your celebration. It can be just a rub down if
you'd like." Not that D'kere would complain if it led to other things.

"Let's start there and see how it goes. I'd hate to fall asleep on you,"
she admitted. A massage might just get her that tired.

"We'd better get started then," the bronzerider smiled and began rolling
up the sleeves of his tunic.
