The noise of the Dining Hall was overwhelming. Jaylene stood at the
threshold between it and the kitchens, her plate of food in one hand,
a well-earned mug of beer in the other. She looked around for the
faces of her two brothers but realised she wouldn't spot them. J'zen
was still on his sweep and Jayonne was now an candidate, doing
candidate sort of things. Inwardly she chided herself for feeling like
a candidate herself. **Come on girl, you're not only a dragon rider,
you_are_a bloody wingthird! Act like one!**

Taking a deep breath she strolled into the Hall, going straight for an
empty table in one of the corners.

"Hey," D'ale waved at the greenrider. "Over here wingthird." He'd seen
her knots and from the description he'd been given looked like the
rider he'd been looking for.

Over the general drone of voices Jaylene heard the brownrider's
pleasant voice call out to her. She turned and smiled, walking over to
him. D'ale, his name was. And was D'ale ever handsome. "Hiya, " she
said, sliding into the seat opposite. "It's hard knowing where to go
when you're new to a Weyr."

"Don't I know it," he smiled back. "I was once at River Bluff for a
few turns and it wasn't so easy finding my way around at first. Are
you settling in alright?"

"I think so." Jaylene gave D'ale a funny look, then rolled her eyes.
"Or maybe not. Did the drills go okay today? Maybe it's the way we've
all come to this Weyr that has me thrown off."

"Nothing I didn't expect," he smiled reassurance. "Cyan has a way of
growing on you. The formations will come more naturally next time." He
took a drink. "Have any suggestions?"

"The left flank could stand to loosen up a bit. There seem to be a lot
of larger blues and browns in there and not quite enough greens for my
liking." She grinned and shrugged her shoulders. "I like to see a lot
of greens around the larger blues and browns, they make up for the
larger ones being a bit on the clumsy side."

D'ale nodded. "We can try that in the next drill. Now," he smiled
thankful for the help he was getting in a Wingthird. "Here are the
schedules for last month. I'd like you to draw up a new one for next
month. You'll need to assign those with discipline restrictions to
watch duty and pairs for sweeps. I'd also like at least two swings
around the new territory for searchers.

"Id also like to try that young green just out of her weyrlinghood who's on
the left flank for that, if it's okay. My Reanth seems to think she
might have be sensitive at Searches."

"Excellent," D'ale nodded. "Have her go out with an experienced pair
just to see if she confirms any selections. If she does, we can
inform the Weyrleaders of the possible new search dragon and have her
assigned a partner. Then the usual training."

"Will do, Reanth will be pleased. She was never much good at Searches
herself, so she makes up for it in seeking out dragons that would be
good." Jaylene grinned. "She's a bit on the sensitive side, poor
thing."

D'ale smiled. "Torerath thinks she's lovely."

"Torerath's not so shabby himself," Jaylene teased.

There was a time when D'ale would have escalated and taken a possible
opening to he next level. But, in this case, she was his wingthird.
Also, he had a weyrmate who had his heart. He was no longer the
irredeemable flirt he once was. Still there was an acknowledging light
in his eyes. "Well," he said with a wider smile. "I look forward to
working with you."

"And I you."
