R'axe

R'axe

"Can I help you?" the apprentice at the desk asked.

"Yeah, I need someone to look at my wrist." R'axe's left arm was
cradled against his chest, and the apprentice could see from the
bluerider's pinched features that he was in some discomfort.

"Name and Wing?"

"R'axe, Cyan Wing." He watched as the apprentice's eyebrows lifted a
little. She recognized his name, it made him grin.

"Right this way," she led the way to a small examining room where she
gestured for R'axe to sit on the table. "A healer will be with you
shortly." She said left and pulled the curtain over his doorway.

Jadirah had been reviewing the records of the patient she was giving a
pregnancy checkup on later, so it was easy for her to set that aside,
go wash her hands in redwort, and step into the room with the new
arrival.

"Greetings, bluerider, my duty to your dragon. I'm Master Jadirah,"
she greeted. "What brings you in today?"

It was a brisk, efficient opener, but she had a smile for him to go with it.

"Embarrassingly enough, I tried to jump from my dragon's neckridge,
like I normally do, only I was going too fast and my foot hadn't
totally cleared the straps. I basically went headfirst down to the
ground but tried catching myself," he held his left arm a little way's
from his body, "landed funny on my wrist."

"I'll need to take a look at it, and I'll try to be gentle," she said,
reaching out to feel it to check if it was sprained or if it felt like
the bone was damaged.

"Was this just a normal dismount, or were you trying to turn the head
of an attractive man nearby with your graceful skills?" she teased.

R'axe laughed, she'd already pegged him. "I wish I could say it was in
the pursuit of a man, but sadly it was just one of those quick,
careless errors." The area around his eyes tightened a little as she
inspected his wrist.

"I'm not judging, I promise. I can't say I haven't done stupid things
myself in pursuit of a bedmate," she said.

"I can feel the signs of swelling and bruise is starting to form. I
know there's got to be some pain, but is it substantial? Any
numbness?" Those were more likely to indicate a fracture and potential
nerve involvement.

"My thumb is a little numb, actually," he confessed. "I wasn't sure if
it was because I landed on it or if it got twisted back in the fall."

"Could be a sign of fracture or something getting pinched." It felt
like something might be slightly out of alignment, which meant
fracture, she worried.

"Brace yourself," she said, and then manipulated it slightly to settle
it in place.

R'axe's entire body tensed as pain shot from his thumb all the way
down to the soles of his feet. The bluerider hissed an exhale through
clenched teeth, and realized that little beads of sweat had popped up
on his brow. "I don't know what you women are talking about,
complaining of the pains of childbirth, apparently you've never had a
tweaked thumb before." Even though his voice was strained his good
humor still bled through.

Jadirah threw back her head to laugh at that. "I've had two babes and
broke an ankle. At least the childbirth get you something nice after
it's done."

She offered him a handkerchief dipped in cool water for his face.

"Better now?"

R'axe nodded, although his heavy breathing was still subsiding,
"Promise me you won't tell any good looking men about," and he waved
his good hand to indicate his shaken demeanor. "You can tell pretty
women, though, they'll find it endearing."

"It's knee-weakening when a man doesn't just stoically suffer through
pain," she teased. "By the way, this is going to get splinted for a
few days so it doesn't move out of alignment and I don't have to do
that again. I can write you a lovely excuse note for your wingleader."

"Can you also write a prescription for a lovely young man or woman to
wait on me while I recuperate?" R'axe teased, finding that the pain
was a little better once she began to wrap his wrist.

"I don't think I can just pass someone else out to you. Though you're
welcome to flirt with any of the journeyman Healers and see if they'll
take you up on it. But if you flirt with my apprentice daughter,
you'll regret it," she quipped as she finished it up.

R'axe looked Jadirah up and down, "I wouldn't do anything to cross
you. Something tells me I would live to regret it."

"Healers know how to make you feel very very good...or very very bad,"
she said, dropping her voice in an attempt to sound scary.

"I choose to ignore the latter and focus entirely on the very very
good part." R'axe said with his signature winning smile.

"Try asking for a massage. We're trained to be good with our hands,
after all, and what starts as theraputic can rapidly shade elsewhere.
Though I'm sure you know that." His smile was infectious and she
grinned back at him.

He was aware, he'd had many a massage that had led to better things.
"Has anyone ever complimented you on your bedside manner, Master
Jadirah?"

"Yes, and also on my manner in bed," she said shamelessly. She
probably shouldn't be flirting with a patient, but the actual Healing
was over now and he was fine for most things that didn't involve his
dragon or drills.

The pain in R'axe's wrist was being quickly forgotten about. "Oh? I'd
have to experience that as well before I could comment."

"Well, if you let me know where your weyr is, I'd be happy to drop by."

Well, this injury was turning out not to be so bad after all, R'axe
decided as he explained the easiest course to his mid-level weyr.

"I'll see you this evening then."

She turned away for a moment to pen the note to his wingleader, then
handed it over. "You enjoy your sudden time off, and don't get that
splint too wet."
