"Ok, so, see anyone who strikes your fancy?" Kiomo asked his Harper friend as they slowly walked around the outside of the circle of dancers.
"Hmmh," Fymer said thoughtfully and looked around.
Nerylyn was standing at the edge of the crowd, waiting her husband to come back. Uegot was taking their children to stay with family friends who had agreed to take them for overnight so the two of them could spend time together. Her pregnancy was still so early stages that it was easy to hide with the cut of her dress. She absently fiddled with her curl, re-attaching a strand that had escaped from the elegant bun.
"She looks promising," Fymer said, spotting the petite brunette. "Nicely curvy too."
"Yeah, she'd definitely do, eh?" Kiomo smiled, looking the woman up and down appreciatively. Fymer had good taste. But he has promised to get the Harper laid, and he saw her first. His friend had first dibs. **But if you fall on your face, I might have to revisit this one...** "She looks alone and bored. I'd say you have a shot. If you feel like you're running into trouble, just look my way and I'll to give you some subtle pointers."
"Hello, there, looking for someone?" Fymer approached the woman and greeted her with his best smile. He was feeling surprisingly nervous. His marriage to Cimria had been an arranged by their families, so he never really dated a woman.
"I'm waiting for my husband," Nerylyn replied.
As Kiomo stepped into a spot where he could easily see the action and be seen by his friend, a rather pretty, plump little woman with an appreciative glint in her eye walked between him and the Harper. **Shards, she smelled good...** Kiomo thought, following her with her eyes and giving her a polite nod when their eyes met as she disappeared into the crowd. Looking back at Fymer it had seen that the woman had said something to him. Well, that had to be good, right? Kiomo nodded in her direction, silent encouraging him to say something.
"Why did he leave you all alone? You're such a lovely thing," Fymer asked, bolstering his courage with a sip of the wineglass he was carrying.
Nerylyn gave him a frosty look. "To drop of the children with their babysitter." Last thing she wanted was some drunken harper trying to hit on her.
Meanwhile, otherside of the crowd, Uegot was trying to weave his way past the people. Concious of his size and strenght, he tried not to push or jostle people. He could had just plown his way thru them but that was rude.
Kiomo was straining to hear over the crowd. Did she say her children were with her baby sister? Well, she was free then! He touched his hair and gave him the thumbs up, hoping Fymer might understand that to mean he should compliment her hair.
Fymer saw Kiomo's gesture with the corner of his eyes and didn't quite know what it mean. Touching seemed to forward at this time.
Why was he just standing there doing nothing? The girl was going to lose interest if he didn't make some kind of move. Kiomo repeated the same gesture, but more exaggerated.
With a mental shrug, Fymer reached out to touch Nerylyn's hair, saying: "You have such a lovely hair."
"Hey, don't to that!" Nerylyn batted his hand away.
Of course, that was when Uegot arrived. He considered himself a gentle man, but someone harrassing his wife did bring the scary part of him out. "Leave my wife alone," he rumbled, standing right behind Fymer's back.
Fymer spun around to look and nearly wetted his pants when he came face to face with the seacrafter. Uegot was wearing an expression that suggested he was quite ready to kill the harper, or at least beat him to a pulp.
Kiomo had seen his friend reach out to touch the woman's hair with disbelief. What was the idiot doing?! Why would he think he could touch her hair just like that?! When he saw Uegot's large frame, he realized the danger his friend was in and quickly sprung into action.
"Journeyman Uegot, excuse me," Kiomo said, squeezing in between the two men. "Happy Turns End. Please excuse my friend here, he meant no harm. He lost his wife a few Turns back and this time is always hard for him. He hides his pain behind his wine. I was supposed to be watching him and I got a little distracted. My fault, entirely my fault. I am so, so sorry. And I don't believe I've met your lovely wife yet. My apologizes ma'am."
"Kiomo," Uegot awknowledged the young man's presence.
"That's not an excuse to forget your manners," Nerylyn said, mostly to Fymer. Then she slipped past him to stand next to her husband. Uegot put his arm around her shoulders. She loved the way she could snuggle under his arm and how safe it made her feel.
"I do you beg your forgiveness," Fymer said with his best manners, cheek red with embarrasement.
"As do I. I'm sorry, it won't happen again. Come on, Fymer, let's get us another drink," Kiomo said with a dip of his head as he grabbed his friend's elbow to pull him away before Uegot decided to get really mad...
"It better not," Uegot growled.
Fymer was more than happy to leave the scene.
"Why in Faranth's name did you touch her hair?" Kiomo whispered as he pulled his friend to safety.
"You told me to. What else that hair touching gesture you made meant?" Fymer said defensively.
"I meant _compliment_ her..." Kiomo waved at the air as if batting the question away. "Ok, look, my fault. We should have established a system." And he obviously needed to give him some more pointers! "Let's find another drink and a quiet corner and plan out our strategy before we try again."
