Kiomo handed Fymer a beer. "Did you place your bets?"

"Thanks. Yes, I bet on that skinny, short lad, he looks like he's quick and nimble," Fymer replied. The man he pointed was also mast-climbing champion for many Turns in a row, which he was not going to mention.

"Are you sure he's not _too_ skinny?" There were other competitors that seemed to have far bigger muscles on them. Kiomo had never seen a mast climbing competition, so what it took to get up the tall poles that had been buried deep into the ground was completely unknown to him.

"Too much mass makes you slow and heavier you are, more work you have to do to pull yourself up," Fymer answered. He was from a seahold after all.

"Huh," Kiomo shrugged. Who knew being scrawny could pay off. "So, let me get this straight... The men climb up this 30 foot tall pole and grab one of the flags stuck in the top and they win?"

"Yes, sounds fairly simple, doesn't it," Fymer agreed.

Kiomo looked up at the top of the tall 'mast'. "What happens if they let go?"

"Long fall and splat," Fymer said with a wicked grin.

A look of horror passed over his friend's face. "Do people die?"

Fymer had enjoyed enormously his horrified reaction and chuckled. "Very rarely, they've professionals. And when they do, it's mostly just broken bones," he reassured Kiomo with friendly slap to the shoulder. He looked around them. "Of course, man kind being what it is, half of them are hoping for a big splat," he said with cynical voice.

"Well, that's true," Kiomo muttered, looking at his friend with a sideways glance. Fymer just might be one of those people, he guessed. "So where's the best spot to watch the action?"

"Probably up there," he pointed towards a rise. "Unless you want to climb to the roof," he noticed few young lads who had done just thad to get a good view.

"And go splat just like those poor bastards might? Not on your life," Kiomo laughed as he made way to the patch of higher ground that was already filling with onlookers. "Besides, it's easier to get another beer from there."

"So true," Fymer replied. "I spent too much at the desk or at the archieve to climb up anything these days."

"There are other ways to stay fit," Kiomo said with a grin as his eyes followed a pretty young woman passing in front of them.

"Umh," Fymer grunted, his eyes following her too. Unfortunately he did not have Kiomo's good looks.

"Eh, she's not my type," Kiomo said after the briefest moment of consideration. "She obviously not married yet. I tend to like the married ones. I don't know why that is..."

"Doesn't that lead to all kind of complications? Like to angry husbands?" Fymer asked.

Kiomo shrugged. "I don't have to deal with it if they are from outside the Hold. Besides, there's nothing women like better than a secret."

"If you say so, I admit not having that kind of experience," Fymer replied with a slight shrug. His feigned indefference was just to cover his envy.

"Oh, shards, Fymer, a feast like this is just crawling with desperate wives with wandering eyes. I bet if you let your Harper's tongue loose in a woman's ear, she'll gladly let you loose it elsewhere." Kiomo leaned in to say in a bit more discrete tone, "Just make sure she isn't from this Hold or you can bring a heap of trouble on yourself."

"Hmm, I just might a give it a try," Fymer said thoughtfully. "There are plenty of visitors from other Holds."

"Definitely. I'll help you find one later. I'm an expert at spotting women who are bored with their husbands." At least, he always seemed to find them!

"I definently don't have talents like that," Fymer replied.

"You can't throw a stone in a crowd like this without it landing at the feet of one. All women are bored with their husbands. Some just don't know it yet!" And helping them realize it could be even more fun, in Kiomo's experience.

"If you say so," Fymer was still bit skeptical, that sounded way too easy. Based on his experience, if it was too good to be true, it wasn't true.

"I will make you a promise, Fymer," Kiomo said, laying his hand over his heart. "If I you don't get laid tonight, then neither will I. Deal?"

"Deal," Fymer agreed.
