Characters: J'nev, R'axe
Description: J'nev and R'axe have a chat about Rising greens and all the perks that go along with them
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 12, day 26 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Paetri, J'kri, Aileyan
J'nev sat down next to the bluerider and gave him a nod in greenrider Skania's direction. "I hear Econith will be Rising soon. Skania's being a bit snappy, and I couldn't help but notice her green was starting to turn a different shade."
"Yes, Jayth has been waxing poetic about Econith all day. Faranth knows he can rarely resist flying after a rising green." Jayth won here and there, but most of the time R'axe found himself with a flight moth, which he didn't necessarily complain about either. "Skania's pretty but, she's got a sharp tongue." He couldn't imagine what she was like in bed.
"Yeah, well, sometimes girls with sharp tongues really know how to use them," J'nev said with a broad grin. One particular girl from the Queen's Wing came to mind.
R'axe barked out a laugh, there was definitely some truth to that, although, he also liked men with sharp tongues. "Nothing wrong with a little sweetness to go with the bite." That, of course, made him think of Paetri, who was an interesting, complex mix of strength and fragility.
J'nev shrugged a shoulder. "Only if you want something more than a good time, I guess. This is a Weyr. What does it matter what they're like outside of bed if you're having fun?" Though the Weyr's casual nature towards intimate relationships was at first hard for J'nev when he first arrived, he had decided to just accept, even embrace the idea that Weyr folk usually just thought with their genitals and that there was no such thing as real love between men and woman, or whoever they fancied, in a Weyr.
"I find personalities often make themselves known during love making, not as much during a flight, but definitely afterwards if you're going back for seconds." R'axe had found himself in many beds over the Turns, in and out of flights, and the sex was definitely better if the other person was likeable in some way. "Not that Jayth cares, he likes any kind of green."
"Ankioth too. But I certainly don't mind! He could chase a gold or green a day and I would be just fine with that!" It was good practice for his bronze to chase after so many females. One day he would have a good shot at the Queen, J'nev was sure. "It makes me feel a little bad, though, when he loses. He's the one doing all the work and in the end I'm the one who gets some! Not that I'm complaining that the Weyr has so many willing ladies, of course!"
**And men.** R'axe added mentally, thinking of his favorite, J'kri. That was the great part of being a bluerider, R'axe thought, he wasn't limited by gender. He could step into the arms of a flight moth without caring if it was a woman or man.
"There's only one wrench in the plans, with the way we've been drilling lately to get the new riders from River Bluff comfortable with our formations, Jayth will probably be too tired to bother if a green rises."
"That's true." And all those riders looked so shellshocked. "I can't even imagine what all that was like. Kind of gives you a feeling like we're next, doesn't it?"
"I hope not, Dolphin Cove can take the next disaster. We lost our Weyrwoman, got a new one, then we lost our Weyrleader, and got a new one. Not to mention there was the time the thinga-ma-bob broke and we didn't have heat and we all had to build fires and huddle together until the technicians got it fixed. Oh, and Genna left, leaving us short a gold dragon." R'axe shook his head, "No, by all accounts, it's sunny Dolphin Cove who gets the next bout of bad luck."
"Naw, that's not bad luck. That's just bad choices. And they're easily recovered from. Dolphin Cove had that typhoon that nearly destroyed it a few Turns back. And before that they had been hit with a Fall so bad, some Dragonsfall riders had double Threadfall duty until they could recover." J'nev hadn't been at the Weyr at either of those events, but he had been taught about it in classes when he arrived, and heard first hand accounts from some of the riders. "Volcanoes, earthquakes, landslides, floods, typhoons, tsunamis, Thread... We protect this sharding planet, but it's out to get us all. Dragonfall's due."
R'axe shook his head, "I can't agree. The constant cycling of leadership isn't healthy. The last Weyrwoman left with eggs that were meant for Dragonsfall, and now Genna went and did the same right before it was her time. If future dragons keep being taken from Dragonsfall how can we continue to replenish injured dragons and fatalities? The fact that _our_ fates rest in the hands of two people at the top and their decisions? Poor or otherwise? Seems like bad luck to me." He shrugged and then flagged a drudge for a fresh cup of klah. "Why are we disputing who should get bad luck anyway? I'd much rather be discussing which green Jayth is going to catch." Politics were far too serious an issue for R'axe, who spent more time surveying the Dining Cavern for a bed partner than he did thinking about other Weyrs.
J'nev shrugged. If R'axe wanted to be caught with his pants down, that was his problem. And being that he was a blue, that would probably be right where he'd be caught. Blues could never think with anything above their belt for long. "I know Ankioth will be in the chase. He likes Econith, and she seems to like him." And why wouldn't she? He was a bronze!
"Then let the best dragon win, I guess." R'axe said with a jaunty smile and raise of his mug. His dragon knew greens, and he knew how to catch them, R'axe would leave Jayth to what he did best. J'nev wasn't the first young bronzerider that R'axe had dealt with, but it was always extremely satisfying when his blue outflew one of the cockier bronzes, and it would be even more so when Jayth took Econith right in front of Ankioth.
"Either way, I'll get mine. There are a few Lower Cavern girls I'm hoping will be waiting to comfort me if I lose." Though J'nev couldn't help but wonder what Aileyan would be like. Would she like a visit from a lusty bronzerider?
"That's the best part of a flight, even the losers can walk away satisfied." R'axe agreed.
"Have you ever had Wesni after a Flight?" The woman was definitely old enough to be J'nev's mother, but seemed to be in the circle whenever she had a chance. "She's not much to look at but, shards, does that woman know what she's doing!"
"I haven't," R'axe said, although he'd certainly seen her there often enough. "There is another bluerider I tend to look for, and if he's not there, I'll take the next pair of open arms." He wasn't too picky about age, but he did have some standards when it came to the looks department.
"I used to just go with whoever, but I've definitely been looking for more of the experienced ladies lately. I mean, the young girls are hot, but they can be really selfish. It's like they don't get that I'm the one _really_ feeling the dragonlust! They get a taste of it, sure, but they don't have needs like _I_ have needs, you know?" Seriously, a Flight circle should not be about the girl. "Older women, they're just happy to get some. They know they couldn't have a young guy like me without the dragon lust. They're grateful and they show it."
R'axe had to hide his laughter behind a fake cough and his mug of klah. He remembered being J'nev's age and thinking similarly, but to have it said aloud made him recall how ridiculous he had been. "Aye," he said, not to take the wind out of the younger man's sails, "there is something to be said about gratitude."
