R'axe

The green dragon had woken up that morning and perched on the heights
of the Weyr rim, surveying the expanse of the weyrbowl below her
intently. She watched the wing at morning practice intently,
scrutinizing the performance of the male dragons. The sun above shone
brightly on her green hide and made it clear she would rise today.
She flirted with males when they looked at her and made sure they were
watching her avidly.

Her rider felt the green's proddiness acutely. Unlike Riveth, she was
cranky rather than flirtatious, restless inside and aching to move or
do something. She didn't dare go do a sweep lest the green choose then
to rise and she knew she'd have no temper for helping weyrlings with
stupid questions in stupid classes, so she sequestered herself in a
bathing pool where she could try to soak it off.

It was the lunch candlemarks when Riveth finally leapt down and to the
feeding pens. Talwynn leapt out the pool and pulled a robe around
herself. She walked to the flight cots and mentally chanted Riveth to
blood only.

The green tore into a wherry and blooded it fast. Then she snapped a
challenge at the males nearby and launched into the sky.

Kenirath had been keeping an eye on Riveth for some time, since they
often shared a ledge while their riders were together, the bronze had
come to enjoy the green's company. Today he would fly her and claim
her as his mate.

When she launched herself into the sky, Kenirath lifted his copper
wings and joined chase.

Jayth, on the other hand, made his decisions as quickly and without
much contemplation, as his rider did. The blue scrambled off his ledge
and flung himself into the sky after Riveth, leaving R'axe jogging to
the flight room.

Arinoth had noticed Riveth when she had been sitting atop the Weyr.
She was a handsome green and the brown found his interest piqued.
K'yne was halfway to the flight room by the time Arinoth joined the
pack of males in the air.

Two other dragons saw the green lift her wings and took after her.
Young Juvath had seen Riveth during weyrling training and he desired
to chase her, so he did. The other was an older blue named Selith. He
crooned at the green as she flew.

Riveth soared away from the Weyr and in the general direction of Amber
Hills Hold, seeking an easier flight path over hills rather than a
tricky one over mountains. She wanted to go far and fast. Acrobatic
twists and turns would be good for when the males got closer, to weed
them out, but for now she could outdistance them in the race.

}:Who is going to prove himself worthy?:{ she demanded of them.

Jayth was a fast blue and he surged forward in front of the heavier
Kenirath. Kenirath was patient, however, content for the moment to let
the impulsive blue use up his energy here in the beginning.

Arinoth cut down in front of Juvath, the tip of his tail nearly
tickling the tip of the younger dragon's nose.

Juvath snorted as Arinoth got in his way. He ducked to the side and
then flapped wildly to gain some height, wanting to get out the way of
the chaseing dragons and into a better line of sight of the green.

Riveth got tired of the straight race and suddenly dove down towards a
river below, leveling out just above it. Another time she might have
trailed wingtips through it or dove into it playfully, but not now -
her blood heated too much for mating.

Selith was in the middle of the pack. He was faster than Juvath or
Kenirath, but slower than Jayth due to his age. But he was a cunning
blue who had flown many a green and he was just biding his time.

Her dive took Juvath by surprise. The young brown immediately plunged
downwards to chase her, but got invested enough in the dive that he
had trouble pulling up in time. His wing did hit the water's surface
and he wasted time shaking off his wings and trying to fly. He still
wanted to chase her but now he was well behind the pack.

Arinoth spiraled forward, showing great agility for a brown. On the
ground D'kere rolled his eyes at the brown's antics, mirroring
Kenirath's feelings as he dug deep and sped forward, willing his long
wings to close the distant between himself and Riveth, who had Jayth
close on her tail.

Riveth's wings began to ache and she turned to fly upwards rapidly to
gain height before the fall. She brushed close to Jayth but twisted
out his way before he could catch her. }:Who dares claim me?:{ she
challenged.

}:I will,:{ Selith said before lunging at her, hoping to surprise her
in the climb. But he missed, fouled by a brown in the way. Riveth
twisted herself to skim under another dragon, and then went for more
height, but then talons clasped her.

Kenirath roared his victory, the cry echoing through the air as the
bronze clutched Riveth to him, twining necks quickly with her and
thrusting out his wings to slow their descent.

On the ground, D'kere mirrored his dragon, grabbing Talwynn and
pinning her to him. She was his!

Z'then staggered out of the flightroom to go take a cold bath, as did
L'dais, who grabbed a moth on his way out.

Talwynn was conscious of it being Kenirath who caught Riveth and that
it was D'kere wrapping his arms around her and pressing their lips
together. She felt an overwhelming fierce surge of gratitude that it
was him and no other. Then the heat built between them and the clothes
came off and she thought of nothing at all.
