Description: Who will win Vilarth this time?
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 11, day 13 of Turn 8
Vilarth woke up suddenly. Her pale gold shine brighter than usual in
the bright sunlight. She arched her neck elegently and the trumpeted
loudly, calling the bronzes to her.
Lenala abandoned her hidework. Finally, it was happening. She should
have Risen a month ago. Something, perhaps the situation in River
Bluff, had thrown her off-cycle. Lenala barely had the time to warn
the others and catch up with Vilarth before she headed out to
the feeding pens.
Torrent Wing had literally just taken to the air for some practice
time when the call from Vilarth came. There was no hesitation as
bronzes peeled out of the air and headed back for the ground. Xmrenth
was one such bronze.
}:Get me out of these straps.:{ He commanded K'lvin as he deposited his rider.
K'lvin ripped off his goggles and helmet before hastily unbuckling the
straps from his lifemate's hide. Xmrenth's wings twitched anxiously as
he swayed lightly on his feet, eyes fixated on the golden Vilarth.
The flare of dragonlust was intense and once again Y'gel handed off
his class to a bluerider assistant.
Aughashyth landed lightly in pen but he was anything but gentle as he
blooded his kill. }:I will win her,:{ his voice and real confidence
now that he had won a gold flight.
**She's older and wiser than the young one you caught** Y'gel chuckled.
**Blood only!** Lenala reminded Vilarth with firm tone. The gold
wrestled against her will. Either Lenala was getting stronger or just
more experienced in controlling her for the gold acquiescenced with
surprising easiness. Good thing too, since Lenala was already under
great deal of stress and didn't want any more. Perhaps Vilarth sensed
her rider's mood and didn't want to burden her.
The gold tore a throat open from her chosen prey and drank the blood.
After draining the first beast she picked another one.
}:Vilarth rises!:{ snarled Volaith. The bronze lusted for the gold.
The gold dragon was _his_ mate. And his rider was connected to her
lifemate. He'd won her last time. He would win her this time. As far
as he was concerned, it was inevitable.
}:Vilarth is going up,:{ Rogueth warned K'ran. }:I will chase her!:{
The bronze had been keeping an eye on all of the River Bluff queens.
He wanted to prove himself better than the local bronzes. He would win
this flight, as he had won anothers, and show himself worthy of being
in charge.
Both dragonriders staggered towards the feeding grounds to watch their
dragons blood.
A shadow passed over the feeding grounds as Seneth dropped from the
sky like a stone onto a herdbeast. He bit savagely into it, his
glittering eyes fixed firmly on Vilarth. This time, she'd be his.
Vilarth stopped to survey her domain and her suitors. Satisfied that
some many bronzes had show up, she drained one more wherry.
Aughashyth was almost jumpy with his impatience for the flight to
start and watched Vilarth intently. He'd already drained several and
the energy flowed in his veins.
Xmrenth waited impatiently, shifting from foot to foot, his front
talons digging gouges into the ground.
Vilarth dumped the drained carcass and launched herself to the air.
Her mating call echoed from the Weyr's cliffs when she rose higher,
sun sparkling on her hide.
**Choose well,** Lenala send her fervent wish before the mating bond
took over and she lost the ability for cohorent thoughts.
}; I always chose well, :{ Vilarth bragged and called her suitors.
Aughashyth used a mighty leap to follow her into the sky. Confidence
in a prior win made him eager to follow the golden arrow to the top of
the sky. He warbled his admiration even as he jockeyed for a good
position in the pack that followed her.
Xmrenth surged after the gold, determined to be close to her at all
times, or at least, as much as he could.
Vilarth first took them over the sea. Then she made a wide circle and
returned to fly over land. She rose higher until the air was almost
too thin for them. The first chasers started to drop out, those who
were too young, too old or brown. With Orlaith absent, she was
determined to choose the best. She considered her options. She was
definently favouring Volaith, and he had given her handsome
hatchlings...but perhaps this time they needed some new blood.
Aughashyth was fine, experienced bronze but he did have a defect.
Rogueth had proved himself capable, but he was Orlaith's mate.
Senenth was young and had yet to prove himself to her. She felt
tempted to let him prove himself to her. There was also Xmrenth,
reliable, experienced and had led his wing with competence.
As Xmrenth began making his move in the air, edging closer to Vilarth,
on the ground K'lvin was closing the gap between himself and Lenala.
At the same moment Xmrenth edged past Volaith and claimed Vilarth,
K'lvin's hand caught Lenala's arm and pulled her against him.
}:Mine!:{ Xmrenth crowed triumphantly twining necks with Vilarth and
locking talons
Vilarth crooned her acceptance, he was indeed clever and capable bronze.
On the ground, Lenala wrapped her arms around K'lvin. Right now she
didn't care who he was. All she cared was that he could satiate her
need.
Volaith snarled in fury as another bronze slipped past him to claim
the queen. _His_ queen! She should have chosen him! As he spun away
from the mating pair he snarled his outrage. On the ground, A'kades
staggered away from the mating cots in need and frustration.
F'lin buried his face in his hands so that he didn't have to see Lenala and K'lvin as Seneth roared in frustration and anger for both of them. This time was supposed to be different!
Aughashyth simply wheeled and dove into the water as he'd done a
myriad of times before. His rider turned and left the flight room in a
daze to find his weyrmate who he knew would be waiting and willing to
assuage his loss.
