Having a firelizard was sometimes a mixed blessing. Thank's to Aes,
Taren knew as well as the dragonriders what was going on in River
Bluff Weyr. He kept getting short messages from the members of his
family: who was okay, who was not.
"With your permission, Weyrleader, Weyrwoman, I would like to take a
team of healers and some basic supplies to help out River Bluff Weyr;"
Taren presented his request. "Obviously, I need dragonriders to take
us there."
"It's of course fine with me," Saibra said, glancing at K'reyel to see
his thoughts. "I have a wingrider," she added, thinking of Tavia,
"that is also a journeywoman healer. She could help transport as well
as see to wounded."
Silent for a moment, K'reyel was sure that his thoughts were open for
anyone to read. He more than most was aware of what was going on,
hearing messages passed to him from his father's dragon. "We need to
send a team, that's obvious. And perhaps evacuate the wounded, and
some of the children here. We have the room, and the skills to do
that. I'm sure Yanley can help us find some temporary foster families
for them."
D'ale nodded in agreement. "Other Weyrs and Holds will also pitch in,
don't you think?"
"They better," Taren said. He had been born in River Bluff Weyr, he
still had family living there so he was anxious on their behalf. "Has
anybody any idea how large team we need?"
D'ale looked at K'reyel, "I can go now if you'd like and take Tavia
with me then let you know what you need to bring. Does that make
sense?"
"Plenty," the weyrleader said. "Perhaps we can send some of the senior
weyrlings and assistants to Opal Cove and Amber Hills to see if they
can host some people as well?"
"Certainly, Weyrleader, they are at your disposal," G'nir replied.
"Just let me know how, where and when."
"What kind of supplies are needed, do you have any idea, Taren?"
Yanley asked. As a Headwoman, she would be the one to gather them up.
"Blankets, tents, food the non-perishable kind and clothes. My team
and I will take care of medical supplies," Taren replied.
Yanley frowned. "Tents, those can be hard to get." The Weyr didn't
have much use for them, she couldn't remember any in the Weyr's
storages. Individual dragonriders might have their own, if they liked
camping out. She would have to ask around.
Saibra was surprised that Dragonsfall had no tents. She knew that
Dolphins Cove had been forced to use them when they'd had to move
their kitchens outside while the inner caverns were being wired with
electricity. Emergency supplies were something they needed to stock
for the future, she made a mental note.
"We'll have to ask the Holds for tents to spare, surely that is common
supply for their guards?" Saibra looked back at Yanley for the answer,
since she had the most Hold experience.
"I know that Amber Hills Hold has them, large ones too, the kind of
pavilion-like ones used during Gathers. I'm sure Lord Zathris won't
mind borrowing those to us," Yanley answered.
"I'll send someone straight there with a letter for Lord Zathris and
his stewards." K'reyel made a note to add to his list. "I'll make sure
we send someone with those senior weyrlings, they can bring supplies
straight back and get the new visualisations for where they are
setting up camp."
Saibra looked at the dragonriders that would be going, "If you need
anything, Chioneth will be listening for you. Just send word and we'll
do what we can." So much for those emergency drills she and K'reyel
had been planning, a real one had showed up at their neighbor's
doorstep, and now it was time to see what Dragonsfall could do.
Taren nodded. "And I can have Aes delivering messages." He was feeling
impatient but at least they were doing something. It would still take
candlemarks before they would be actually going there.
"And I'll get busy," Yanley said.
D'ale rose from the table knowing what he needed to do.
