Jessmyr was sitting cross legged on his bed, trying to read a book. His gaze kept going to the brazier on his nightstand and the sand filled pot it kept warm. There was no way to say when the firelizard egg A'kua had given him would hatch, so he had to remain vigilant. He could only hope it didn't happen when he was sleeping or busy at work.

Since he shared quarters with other lower cavern workers, he had gotten lot of curious questions and congratulations. It came of a kind of surprise how encouraging and non-envious the others were, but perhaps it shouldn't have been a surprise.

Suddenly the room seemed to be filled with firelizards and expecting humming filled the air.

"What?" Jessmyr was taken by surprise and he dropped his book.

"Quickly, it's your egg, it has to bee hatching. Do you have food for the hatchling?" Wakell, one of the others asked.

"No," Jess said with kind of desperation. "What do I do now?" he felt the first bangs of panic.

"I'll get you some, I can ran fast. You take care of the egg," Wakell replied and was out of the dorm before Jess got a word out of his mouth.

He picked up the pot. Yes, the egg was rocking. He took it off and hold it in his cupped hands. He saw first faint crack appear. "You can do it," he breathed, excited and nervous at the same time. Would the meat be here before the hatchling came out?

His heart seemed to beat too fast. He forced himself to close his eyes and took few steadying, deep breaths lower his heart rate. Wouldn't do good to get a heart attack now!

He felt the egg twitch and rock in his hands. He had to open his eyes and take a look. Second faint crack had appeared. Something was trying to get out. Jess was wondering if he should help it when Wakell came back. He really had been fast and was now too breathless to do more than drop the bowl of meat scarps next to Jess' knee and fell to his cot.

Jess could feel the other workers looking but they kept respectable distance.

"Thank you," he said to Wakell and then addressed the egg again: "I have food for you, delicious, red meat."

That seemed to do the trick, the egg gave a violent lurch and split in two. Jess only got an impression of a something dark and gooey. With flurry of wings, limbs and tail the hatchling spilled into his lap. The creature growled hungrily and Jess snatched piece of meat, offering it to him. It disappeared to the waiting maw. "Chew, little one. I don't want to tell A'kua how you choked on your first meal."

The firelizard looked up to him and Jess looked into his jewel-eyes. Something connected. He crooned softly, inquiringly. "Chew, like this," Jess moved his jaws and gave him another piece of meat. This time he chew it before swallowing.
