Kaiafel put the bucket down next to the small shovel. "No firelizard eggs at the Weyrlake today." Of course, there never seemed to be. At least none that he had found. Didn't stop him from taking Ravyan on a grand adventure to make sure, though! Kaiafel was nothing if not persistent.

"I don't think the firelizard clutch here," Ravyan said smartly. "Too much trafic. They go to beaches at the sea shore." His mother had firelizard after all, so he knew.

The older boy shrugged, unphased. "Yeah, but Da says that sometimes flits can be really stupid about these things. Especially greens."

"Maybe," Ravyan shrugged. "Did you heard about the bronzerider who found a wild Clutch? I heard he got scratched really bad!"

"Wild firelizards will do that to you," Kaiafel with the air of someone who knew, though in fact he just didn't want to admit that he hadn't heard that story yet. It would not do to show his ignorance in front of his 'little brother'.

"Yeah," Ravyan agreed to that.

"But we can probably wash a dragon." Since their firelizard hunt seemed to have been a bust. "I've washed a gold before, you know. And of course I washed Da's bronze loads of times."

"I help mom to wash her green," Ravyan said with little frown. That didn't sound as impressive as washing a bronze. Or gold.

Kaiafel could tell the boy was in need of a little encouragement. That was what a big brother was for. "That's ok. Your Ma's green is a really good green. She's almost as good as a gold. I know Da would agree, and he has plenty of experience with golds."

"She's very pretty, but she's tiny.. I mean for a dragon. One of the smaller greens," Ravyan said. "My mom's kind small too so maybe it fits."

"That doesn't matter," said Kaiafel, speaking with authority. "She can still out-fly Da's Kalamath in a Flight, and he's stronger and faster than any bronze in Dragonsfall. He catches golds. He caught Teseada's gold, and now he's Flying Hygalia's gold, and he _would_ have flown Trae's if she didn't move, and Jaela's if she didn't die. But he could only catch Kjarliheth sometimes, so she's really good."

"She does get caught by someone every time she Rises," Ravyan pointed out. Which was actully the whole point of mating flights but he was still too young to understand that.

The older boy sensed a teachable moment. "I know you haven't been in Harper Classes long," he said, putting an arm around Ravyan's shoulder, "but when you've been in Harper Classes for a while like me, you will learn a lot more about dragons and how they work. You see, when gold or a green Rises, they _want_ to be caught. But they want to be caught by the best, so they will do their best to _not_ get caught until they are ready. But sometimes a really strong and fast dragon can catch them even before they are ready. So, if she was not a good green, Kalamath would catch her every time because he is really fast and strong. Do you understand?"

"Does that mean that Galerith is even more fast and strong, because he does keep catching lot of greens?" Ravyan asked. He had met the blue's big rider around the lower caverns and thought him fun. Ravyan was pretty sure he had a boy at the creche.

Kaiafel shook his head with a patient sigh, "No," he said, seeing that Ravyan still had a lot to learn. "A blue is _never_ stronger than a bronze. Sometimes greens choose blue because they're fun to flirt with and because the bronzes are just tired of winning so much. I mean, they get the golds every time. Blues _never_ get the golds, do they."

"No, they don't," Ravyan agreed and kicked a pebble to the lake. "Browns do!"

Not to be outdone, Kaiafel picked up a slightly bigger stone and threw it as far out into the water as he could. "Yeah they can, but not very often. And only the browns that are really big, like bronzes. Some of them are really big, you know. But they can never be Weyrleader."

"That's true. Only bronzes can lead," Ravyan knew that much.

Kaiafel draped an arm around the youngster's shoulder once more. "That's right. And that's why you and I will ride bronzes one day, so we can be Weyrleaders just like Da."

"My dad's a brownrider," Ravyan pointed out. He barely remembered the man, he had stopped visiting him when he was a little.

"Ah, that doesn't matter," Kaiafel said with an affectionate shake. "You're my brother now, just like Kaiavin is. We're all going to be Weyrleaders someday. Of course," he added just for clarification, "of different Weyrs."

"Of course, you can only have one Weyrleader," Ravyan grinned.
