All the Best Stories.

Writers: Leigh M-F.
Date Posted: 30th January 2017

Characters: A'kua
Description: Hey'll come out on the other side soon enough. They just need to hear that.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 10, day 4 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Genna and Lissath, Karlin (NPC), Jessmyr, Firelloa (ONPC), Ilyssia and Gwynnyth (ONPCs).
Karlin mentioned with permission. Song sung to the tune of Frank Turner's "The Ballad of Me and My Friends."

It was almost funny, how much things had changed. It was comforting that some things hadn't. However, the things that hadn't changed weren't really helping at the moment. The things that had changed were causing some hangups. Karlin missed Genna; so did Ilyssia, Firelloa, and A'kua. It was different for Gwynnyth and Zeiranth; they could talk to Lissath any time they wished. Distance was no real issue for telepathy. Humans weren't so lucky; they had to settle for letters delivered by borrowed fire-lizards.

(At some point, A'kua vowed, he needed to find a way to give one to Firelloa. She would be happy to have a little Impressed friend, and then they and their loved ones wouldn't have to keep trading for the services of someone else's pet. And if Jessmyr was going to be Headman one day, he needed one too.)

But they were doing their best to keep living their lives. Firelloa was, in A'kua's biased opinion, doing especially well in being Karlin's friend. Ilyssia and Gwynnyth were still flying well in Cyan Wing, waiting for when A'kua could join them and properly move into their weyr. Said redhead was writing more, using Genna's generous gift of paper and pens and good, thick ink for his compositions. Ilyssia had asked him to play one tonight, after the three of them had a quiet, peaceful dinner in the weyr. A'kua was sure he had just the thing; a reminder for all three of them, and for Karlin when Firelloa inevitably repeated it for him. So A'kua sat on the bed, tuned his gitar, and encouraged Lys and Firelloa to dance while he sang.

"Everybody's got themselves a plan,
And everyone thinks they'll be a big man, including the girls.
The harpers who lack the friends to form a band
Are singer-songwriters; the rest of us are teachers
Or official troupe choreographers.

And tonight, I'm playing another big Gather show,
So I'm sending out my flit with notes to everyone I know,
And quite a few I don't whose lives still found their way into my own;
But they might come along anyway,
You never really know.

None of this is going anywhere, and pretty soon we'll all be old,
And no one left alive will really care
About our glory days when we chased our goals,
But if you're all about the destination,
Then take a dragon-flight!

We're going nowhere slowly, but we're seeing all the sights.
And it's definitely not going well,
But we'll have all the best stories to tell.
Yes, it's definitely not going well,
But we'll have all the best stories to tell."

Judging by their smiles when he finished, he must have done something right.
