Almonteo

Almonteo

A morning of stressful drills had taken their toll on Ny'n and the brownrider had been only too happy to take some time in the later afternoon to play his gitar in his weyr with Damarith as his only audience. After playing through several pieces, however, he found himself looking through his sheet music for a challenge. He was sorely diappointed. }:What was wrong with the music that you played? I thought it was nice:{ Damarith offerred.

**I'm restless. I want an instrumental challenge. I want to see a piece of music that I haven't seen before.**

Ny'n headed for the Harper Hall. Perhaps he would see if Kwiksol could recommend something. Almonteo was walking down the corridor towards one of the practice rooms when he noticed somone who seemed a bit out of place. "Excuse me, brownrider. You seem a bit lost. Can I help you?"

"Oh, ah, Master Almonteo, no, well, perhaps," Ny'n answered flustered. "I came in search of some challenging sheet music, but was not able to find Kwiksol. I'm Ny'n by the way, Junior Journeyman in the craft."

"Nice to meet you, Journeyman. If you would like to borrow a piece or two from our music library, perhaps that can be arranged."

"That would be most appreciated," Ny'n answered. "My father usually sends me something new every few months or so, but hasn't for awhile." "It's this way," Almonteo said indicating the young brown should follow him. "What instrument, may I ask?"

"The guitar, mostly. I'm looking to make a harp soon, or perhaps a violin if I can come by some good materials."

The Hallmaster was impressed. "Were you an instrumentalist then?"

"Yes. My father is a harper and I planned to follow in his footsteps, but came to the weyr at twelve turns. I apprenticed here until I impressed and then followed through with my training as I could. Before threadfall, I had a fair amount of time to learn the craft, though." "Well, its good to hear that you're interested in continuing in it."

"I enjoy it and Damarith enjoys my playing," Ny'n shrugged. "So, how are you and the other harpers adjusting to the Weyr, Master?"

"As best we can," Almonteo smiled. "There are those who are having some difficulties, but for the most part everyone is settling in just fine. I'm sure you remember how it was when you first came here."

Ny'n nodded, though long ago, the transition to the weyr had been somewhat awkward for the hall bred boy of only twelve turns. "Yes, I do remember. I was young and everything was so very different. I think it took me several turns to be truly comfortable with the culture of the weyr."

"Well, perhaps in several turns we will have a Hold home of our own again." The Weyr had been kind in taking the Hall in, but the ultimate goal was to be out in a Hold again, and not taxing the Weyr's resources.

Ny'n paused. He had been surprised when the hall had moved to the weyr, but had not considered the permanence of the situation. "Your presence is certainly appreciated by all." "And we owe a great debt to the Weyr. It will not be forgotten,"
Almonteo reassured him.

"I was told that you compose. What type of music do you favor?" Ny'n ask as Almonteo slowed. They must have reached their destination. "Dance music, mostly, though I have been known to come out with something a bit more lyrical."

"It must be fun seeing people enjoy your creations," the brownrider shook his head, "As much as I love to play other's music, I never have been one for coming up with anything original, outside of a bit of instrumental improvisation on an existing piece. "Is this the library?"
he queried with a tilt of his head toward the doorway closest to them. "It is," Almonteo nodded. "Not everyone can check out a piece of music from here. We will have to decide on a policy of how we will let Weyr Harpers use the library. Perhaps, as part of our apprentices copy training, we can get them to make copies of more of our music for your Record Room. There should already be some musical sheets in there, as I'm sure you were taught as an apprentice. Perhaps we should see what we can do about updating it a bit."

"That would be perfect. For now though, I wouldn't mind just looking to see what you have." "Well, you're lucky." The master leaned in consipiritorially. "I happy to know the Hallmaster."
