Lady Felyna

Felyna

Felyna sat up straight in bed, slightly shaken as she had just been dozing off when a sudden noise startled her. It sounded a lot like their main door. "Who's there?" she called out, keeping her voice calm, though she felt a little concerned. The older kids should all be at Harper classes, the younger ones were away with Erassa and she didn't expect Corowal back for quite some time. So she really had no clue who this could be.

"It's me, Zandan and Felcoron," the captain of the guard replied. He walked in, escorting the mentioned boy from the scruff of his neck. His hold was firm but not enough to hurt. The boy squirmed a bit but looked rather defeated.
"I found this wandering outside when he should have been in classroom."

"Felocron!" Felyna gasped in honest exasperation, studying the boys expression as Zandan dragged him in. "Thank you, Zandan, for bringing him to me. Where did you find him?"

"The beasthold," Zandan replied his curtly way and put the boy down to sit in a chair.

"There are new foals," Felcoron muttered. He found them far more interesting that Harper's lessons.

"Yes, foals are lovely," Felyna replied, a hint of understanding in her tone, though it was still strict. "But if you had just asked, someone would have taken you after class. Now you didn't get to see any foals and you're in a heap of trouble. Not the smartest of moves, am I right?"

"No, it wasn't," Felcoron replied. He was smart, all of them were, but being a middle child, he often got overlooked by adults. He had thought no one would notice his absence. Apparently not all overlooked him. In a way it was reassuring that he got missed if he didn't show up where he should be.

"I'm glad you agree, I can trust you to use better judgement next time?" Felyna asked seriously. She'd leave the decision on his punishment to her husband. Even though she'd been with the children for quite a few Turns now, she knew she could never truly be their mother. In that spirit she deferred the big decisions to their father, or at least waited until she was able to discuss them with her husband. That would change when her little baby was born, because he or she would be truly hers. She could feel her stomach churn in nervous anticipation.

"Yes, mom," the word just slipped out of his mouth. He had been so young when Ofelia died while giving birth to Wallia that he didn't truly remember her. To him, Erassa and Felyna were his mothers.

The flicker of surprise on Felyna's face was so brief, it was sure to go unnoticed by Felocron, perhaps not by Zandan. But it was quickly replaced my genuine warmth. "Why don't you hurry back to class then. No use to keep you away longer. We will discuss this later today when your father is available." She was quite certain Felocron would hurry straight to class now, but she would ask someone to check with the Harper just to be safe.

"Okay!" Felcoron jumped up to his feet and was out of the room without as much as a waive or byes.

"Little boys," Zandan grunted but his tone was fond.

"They are what they are," Felyna replied, a smile still lingering at that one word Felocron had spoken so carelessly. It was the ease which he had said it that had truly struck a nerve. If it hadn't come out so natural, she would have thought it a trick to butter her up after his digression. "Thank you for acting so quickly, Zandan, I'm sure you have many other things to do and a child gone truant is probably not high up on your priority list."

Zandan shrugged his wide shoulders. "It's nothing. I've taken it as part of my duties to keep an eye out for them," he replied, refering to Corowal's children.

"Well, I'm glad you have. Corowal has too many things on his mind to keep tabs on them at all time and currently.." Felyna gestured at her current situation. "I'm not much help myself."

"Erassa is supposed to watch them," Zandan said with derisive tone. He never had any warm feelings towards the fostermother and he had deeply disappoved Corowal's fixation towards her. Not that Corowal cared about his opinion when women were the question. "She gets paid for it."

"And she does. But there are a lot of them for one person to mind," Felyna said with a good-natured smile. In spit of everything in their past, she had always had admiration for the way Erassa managed Corowal's offspring. "And it is good for me to practise my motherhood, given the prospects." She gestured vaguely at her seemingly ever-swelling abdomen.

"Yes, they are little handfuls, taking after their father no doubt. For their mother was meek as an ovine," Zandan replied. "Well, I got to get back to work. Good luck with that one," he said with nod towards her midrif.

"There will be no meekness in this one for sure," Felyna smiled, a protective hand stroking her belly. "I'm glad to know it will have you watching over when it grows up, Zandan. Thank you for stepping in there."

"Not a problem, my Lady. Take care," He stood up and gave her a salute.

"You too, Zandan," Felyna said with a nod, watching him leave.
