Description: The Weyrwoman and the new Headwoman have the first sit down.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 6, day 27 of Turn 8
Notes: Note: Follows Choosing a Successor
It hard been hard when Solieira had told her that she was ready to
retire. The headwoman had been one of the few people Rhosyn genuinely
trusted and could always count on at River Bluff. She had been easy to
talk to and had never judged her like the others. Faced with the
prospect of having to learn how to work with someone else altogether,
she felt relief when Solieira had said she had someone in mind and
then Jayzine's name had been mentioned. The goldrider knew Jayzine and
had never had any problems with her either over the turns. She was
pleasant, people liked her, and she could bake. The agreement had been
made to offer her the position.
Sitting at her desk, Rhosyn supposed Jayzine would take it. After all,
it was an honor and she didn't have any children underfoot here at the
Weyr to take up her time and keep her from more duties. Marking off
some things on her list, she waited for her new headwoman to come
through the open door now that everything was cleaned up from morning
meal.
"Good morning Weyrwoman," Jayzine smiled as she came through the door.
"Did you enjoy your breakfast?"
"Yes, I did. Always a fan of eggs when they're done right." With a
hand gesture, she let Jayzine know she could sit before Rhosyn tried
to locate the right hide that she needed in the pile on the corner of
her desk. "And everything went well in the kitchens I take it?"
She sat with a graceful move learned from the ladies of Vintner Hall
while she was growing up and put the clipboard in her lap. "It did,"
she smiled. "We're really set for the balance of the month and into
the next. Solieira plans well in advance so we're able to just
continue with it." There were a couple of things she might re-balance
but those were minor.
"It's nice to be ahead since it helps me work with the Holds as to
what tithes we need to request and gives them time to plan the proper
crops and gather everything to send to us. Of course there's always
room for last minute adjustments if there's a flood or drought and
things are affected." Rhosyn shrugged, thankful droughts didn't
generally happen in their territory. Hurricanes, flooding, and other
problems did though.
"You probably know most of this already from talking to Solieira but
basically she and I do try to keep the menus a month ahead. Then she
comes to me and gets approval for the next month so I can adjust the
tithe requests as needed. This means planning for hatching events and
the like always start at least a month before." Rhosyn found the hide
she wanted and she sat back down.
With stylus in hand, she leaned back in her chair. "I know it's very
soon, so you're probably feeling things out. As time goes by, though,
or maybe if you've thought about it already, let me know if you have
any ideas. Things here have run the same way for a long while which is
not always a bad thing, but change is good too. I made a few small
changes when I came to fit with my style, but otherwise.." Solieira
knew her business so she'd let her continue on with it. And that
hadn't turned out to be a bad decision at all.
"Thank you," Jayzine nodded her agreement. "I was thinking of pulling
a menu for next month from a Turn ago," she pulled the hide out of her
stack and placed it where the Weyrwoman could reach it. "That way I
can get a running start at the following month when there isn't such
short notice."
She smiled at Rhosyn's comments about change. There were some in the
Weyr who didn't deal with it well and she was quite aware of it. So
she planned to start out with only small adjustments at least at
first. "I appreciate the chance you're giving me."
"You've worked hard and you deserve it," Rhosyn replied easily
while looking over the hide. That would be easy enough to manage
with the tithing schedule they had worked out. "Sounds like a good
idea. We have a standing meeting time after my wing meeting time
in the afternoons but before dinner once a sevenday to work out any
staff requests or crafter issues that may come across. Sometimes, it's
in my office, sometimes in hers, or in my weyr or wherever."
"Thank you," she smiled. This could be a very good relationship.
"You're welcome. That's all I have. Start your list?" Inviting Jayzine
to talk about issues to be addressed or her own concerns and goals,
Rhosyn prepared to listen and take notes.
