G'nir

G'nir

Talwynn leaned against the wall of the corridor for a moment, taking
deep breaths to marshal her thoughts and work up her courage to go in
and speak with the Weyrlingmaster. She'd been working her way towards
her goal for months now, and she thought she'd done well with
Lissath's clutch. Now it was close to their Blooding, and it was time
for her to make her request of G'nir.

She squared her shoulders, walked to his office, and rapped firmly on the
door.

"Yes? Please come in," G'nir called. "Ah, Talwynn, what can I do for
you?" he asked when he saw who came in.

"Hello Weyrlingmaster, how are you and Nirreth today?" she asked as
she walked in the door and took a seat.

"We're doing fine. How about you two?" G'nir replied. "Klah?" he had a
pitcher on his desk. "It was delivered less than half candlemark ago."

"Yes, please. And we're well." She hoped the drink would steady her nerves.

"In a weather like this, I found myself drinking more klah than is
good for my stomach," G'nir said with same small-talk-tone when he
poured her a mug.

"Yes, it's very cold. Winter's shown up with a vengeance," she said.
Truth be told she was feeling sore and stiff, but she didn't want to
admit to it in the fear it would undermine her case.

"The current class has been handling it well enough, though," she noted.

"Yes, they are. Of course, we shall soon have another one," G'nir
replied. Onnyth's eggs were hardening. "So, what brings you to my
office? Nothing wrong, I hope?"

There was the question. Talwynn curled her fingers around the mug
before speaking. "Would you say my performance as weyrlingstaff
assistant has been satisfactory so far?"

"I'll say it's been more than satisfactory. You work hard and you
don't let your injury hinder you," G'nir wasn't one to heap praise and
when he did, it was well earned. "In general, the weyrlings like you
and respond well to your instructions." There was always jerk or two
who couldn't get past her scarring. G'nir knew that all to well, he
had been one of those jerks himself as a young man. Now he was much
older and he could only hope, much wiser.

She appreciated his honesty - and the praise didn't hurt. Starting off
with a good impression was important...

"I've really liked working with this clutch. It's more interesting
than some of the retired duties," she said. "And it's been a challenge
that gets me back into shape."

"I'm glad to hear that you've liked your duties here," G'nir said.

She hoped he'd still be happy when he heard the next part. "I've been
getting stronger and I'm keeping up with them. I've tried to do
everything they do at the same rate, almost like weyrlinghood again,
and. With the weyrlings' Blooding coming up, I was wondering if I
could try something a bit more unusual. Like going with them to
deliver firestone."

G'nir didn't want to shot her down right away, but she was a crippled
rider. He remembered seeing healers report of her injuries when he was
familiarizing himself to his new staffs backgrounds. On the otherhand,
she had been working hard and doing so well. Didn't she deserve a
change to try? But would it put her or others around her in to a
danger?
"Doesn't this injury of yours limit the use of your hand? How well
you can you toss firestone sacks? It takes strenght and co
ordination," G'nir asked.

"It does limit the hand use and the Turn after the accident, there's
no way I could have. But since I've started working with the
weyrlings, I've been helping some of them practice throwing both on
the ground and in the air afterwards. Ask J'trel or Zerisa," she said,
knowing they would back her up.

Then again, throwing to one person in a paired after-class drill was
different then the kind of throwing from formation...

"I was wondering if I could join in as a substitute rider for one of
their drills before the blooding actually happens, and then you could
give me an accurate assessment. If I'm not up to throwing far enough,
better to know then."

At least her attitude showed common sense. "Look, before deciding
anything, I want healer's evaluation of your abilities. I don't want
you to risk your life or the life of your wingmates. I also want to
_see_ you throw full firestone sacks, in the air. You know what
happens if you miss," G'nir said. He was giving her a chance to prove
herself to him.

"I'll be happy to meet with Tavia or another Healer, and have them
sign off on a report," the greenrider said. This was better than a
flat out no, and she was
sure she would be able to prove herself. But she didn't want to
endanger the weyrlings or the riders she would be delivering to.

"And I arrange a testing for your throwing skills after I've received
a permission from the healers," sometimes, when people rushed their
recovery, they ended up damaging themselves instead.

She nodded. "How about I see them during lunchtime, after the
classroom instruction period tomorrow?" That way she wouldn't miss out
on assisting,

"Nirreth and I will be there," G'nir promised. And he planned to have
her deliver that sack for _him_.

"Thank you for being willing to give me the chance, Weyrlingmaster," she
said.

G'nir just nodded. "I do hope you succeed," he said.
