K'ran

K'ran

U'das did not submit his transferr request on a whim. While he tended
to live in the moment and not to worry about future, he had given it
some thought. Well, a lot of thought actually. Solieira's retirement
was really the deciding factor. They had so much history together and
now they would be both free to enjoy each other's company. The
question was: where? U'das had enjoyed his life in Riverbluff Weyr and
while he loved the place, Far Island had always been his home. There
lived most of his children and grandchildren. The memories of the life
with Selja no longer pained him when he visited Far Island. Solieira
had family there too.

K'ran looked over the paperwork, and had Rogueth reach out to
Zackariath to have U'das come to talk to him. He wanted to go over
this with the older man first.

While he waited, he had klah, juice, and snacks sent up so this could
be a comfortable conversation.

U'das arrived promptly, he had been expecting that invitaton.
"Greetings, K'ran," he said after knocking the door first.

"Greetings, U'das. How are you and Zackariath doing?" He asked with concern.

"We are getting older and I'm getting blinder," U'das replied with his
customary straighforwardness.

K'ran was a bit surprised by the bluntness, and saddened by the news.
"So you'd like to spend your retirement elsewhere?"

"Yes, in Far Island. That's where I was born, that's where I Impressed
Zack. That's were most of my family lives," U'das replied.

"I know I've met a few of them," K'ran said, remembering his
conversation with Uetia. "With something like family to go home to, I
can't imagine there's much I could say to make you stay."

"I've asked Solieira to come with me," U'das said.

"Now that she's selected her replacement and is ready to retire?" He
hadn't known they were so close, but then, he was newer.

"Yes," U'das nodded. "She has her own health issues," he admitted.
"I've know her for a long time, since I was a weyrling. We only got
seriously involved after Selja's death."

"So if you retire together, you'll have some time to spend just
relaxing." K'ran's finger tapped the paperwork idly before he
realized.

"I'm happy to approve it, though we will miss the pair of you."

"Thank you, Weyrleader. It will take me few sevendays to arrange
everything, not to mention to say goodbyes to everybody. Of course,
Far Island has to accept it too," U'das replied.

"I can't imagine them not," K'ran said. "There's a Conclave coming up
in month 8 of the Weyrleaders, if they haven't said anything before
then I'll ask."

U'das nodded. "I do have favour to ask."

"Go ahead," K'ran said, curious.

"Can you keep an eye on U'fouinn and Uetia for me? I know they've both
grown people and quite capable of taking care of themselves. But I
would feel better if I knew there's someone looking after them."

"That wouldn't be a problem at all," K'ran reassured.

"Thank you," U'das bowed his head gratefully.

"Is there anything else I can do for you right now? Would you like to
stop working with the weyrlings so you have more time to set things up
to move?"

"No, thank you. I can keep working until it's time to move, there's no
rush," U'das replied. In fact, his daughter and son in Far Island were
already scouting for a weyr for him. Or a cot right next to the Weyr.

"Good to hear, I'm sure they'll like seeing you while you can," K'ran
said. "Have you talked about this with anyone else yet? Besides
Solieira?"

"Just with my children," U'das replied.

"Would you like me to fill in the weyrlingstaff or do you want to?" He
wanted to make it as easy as possible on the older man.

"K'sedel and I are old friends, he deserves to hear it from me
personally," U'das shook his head and explained.

"In that case, go ahead and tell him when you're ready." K'ran made
his necessary marks on the transfer paperwork, and offered it back.

"Thanks," U'das said and accepted the hides back. He was feeling both
sad and excited.

K'ran watched him go with some sorrow. It was a shame he was fully
retiring, but he couldn't blame the man for wanting to go home.
