That was not the thing to say. Lanniya's small shrug was enough to push
Rhosyn's buttons. It was like she didn't even think it had been
dangerous at all. Like it had been like getting lost in one of the
Weyr's tunnels without any risk at all, with the fact that she thought
nothing was going to happen making it allright. Not once yet had she
apologized. Her parents, clearly older and wiser, had grasped the
situation and the inherent risks far easily than their daughter who
had been put through training by the Weyrlingmasters and the Weyr's
Weyrwomen.
}:Hold steady. This is not the time.:{ Orlaith was resting her egg
heavy mass, but she was very in tune to her rider's thoughts.
After everything that had happened recently, the stress and being so tired
had already frayed the goldrider's nerves. This little situation falling
into her lap was enough to make her want to lose it for once and just
tell Lanniya what a little idiot she was. That wouldn't help her,
though. It'd probably also scare her and maybe a few others in the
room. Her eyes flicked to K'sedel. She'd seemed to disappoint him so
many times-might as well avoid making a scene this time eh?
Clenching the side of the chair, she continued to let K'ran deal with the
parents, hoping they might be gone soon so they could deal with the
punishment. **I sincerely want to get out of here right now.** Adjusting
her body in her seat, she put her eyes on Lanniya's mother. **Maybe
that's the key. Use her parents to get her to do what she should since
she won't listen to us.** An idea was quietly forming in her brain.
"So you were up North after the shipwreck, spent some time working to
arrange passage back to the South, and have just arrived in River
Bluff's territory and been reunited with your daughters?"
It could work, K'ran thought, if they stuck to it... and it sounded
like they planned to, and they understood the severity. He couldn't
think of anything else to say to the pair of them right now, and he
suspected most of the room wanted to get to handling Lanniya's conduct
first. No need to have the parents here for it.
"We need to continue talking to Lanniya, but you two are dismissed.
The Headwoman will arrange for lodging for now, and we can talk later
about your long-term plans," he said, offering them a polite nod.
Both Pierlin and Kandreya nodded in agreement with K'ran's assessment
of what their story would be. "That is what Lanniya thought would be
plausible." Pierlin replied, wanting to relay that at least his
daughter had planned out that far. He was going to continue, but
K'ran's dismissal of the pair of them set him back a little. His eyes
narrowed and he didn't move from Lanniya's side, instead, wrapping his
arm around her shoulders and meeting the leadership with squared
shoulders. "I understand that there are issues here, but Kandreya and
I are at the heart of them." Lanniya looked up at him as he
continued. "Because of that, we're not leaving our daughter alone with
this tribunal when it cost us all so much to be reunited. There will
be consequences and we understand that, but we're going to face it together."
Wondering if the man realized he had just told the Weyrleader of this Weyr
what was going to happen, Rhosyn forgot her earlier idea and wondered if
this was where Lanniya got it from. Cyradis had said the sister didn't do
things like this, after all. **Faranth let me say this the right way**
"I understand this is all a shock to you. You had left home on a trip,
not knowing that it would cause the rest of Pern to think you dead for
turns, leave you unable to raise your daughters, and then come out of
a storm confronted with a grown daughter who says she is from the
future where you are dead and you are to come with her." Taking a
breath, Rhosyn looked over at Lenala for a moment thinking about how
she might think about this. Lanniya was able to bring her parents back
from the dead, but Lenala's child would never come back. Rhosyn's own
father would remain dead, leaving her family splintered and broken.
"But here we are. Lanniya is a junior goldrider of River Bluff Weyr.
She is a trained dragonrider in our eyes and will be treated as such.
She has a duty to both her dragon and her Weyr and she has not
performed it as she should. So now, as a dragonrider of this Weyr, she
will be held responsible for her actions and decisions she took. She
is not your young child any longer, but a wingrider who has a job and
responsibilities. She may speak to you afterwards if she wishes about
what is said and done here, but right now she will stand here and take
her due." Rhosyn stood up then. She wasn't tall, but the knots on her
arm proclaimed her Weyrwoman of River Bluff-meaning it was her
decision whether or not they stayed there. "I remind you both you are
guests here. Please do not disrespect our Weyrleader again." From nearby,
a very loud noise could be heard that could only have come from the
egg-heavy queen that no one wanted upset.
Y'gel couldn't believe Rhosyn's attitude and it took a moment to close
his mouth. He was a father and understood how the man wanted to
protect his child. Especially after having missed five turns of her
life. And he hadn't disrespected the Weyrleader but simply wanted to
protect a daughter who to him was still only twelve. No matter how
long the Weyr had known her to be grown this man's Lanniya had grown
from birth to twelve under his watchful eye until yesterday when it
all changed. Surely they could make an allowance for that instead of
jumping down his throat. Especially when they we trying so hard to get
him to keep a rather big Weyr secret. "That's a bit harsh after what
they've been through. Don't you think?"
At that point, Kandreya raised a slim hand. "It's all right. I
understand her concerns." Lanniya's mother may have been soft spoken,
but there was little doubt that the woman had a core of steel. "No
disrespect was intended." She gave an apologizing nod to K'ran. "We
apologize if any offense was given." She turned back to the Weyrwoman
to address her. "None of what you said is disputed, save one thing,
Weyrwoman. Lanniya will stand here and take her due and Pierlin and I
both know she has responsibilities that we may know little of.
However, I do not know if you are a mother, but when you bear a child,
that child is always your child, no matter what age she may be.
Lanniya will always be our child, no matter what her status. It has
indeed been a shock to us, but it was because of Lanniya's love for us
that she did this. We will not interfere with her consequences, but we
won't leave her to face them alone."
K'ran could understand Rhosyn's desire to keep this within the
Weyrfolk. He wasn't a father but he couldn't imagine wanting to be
upbraided for your mistakes in front of your parents; he would not
have wanted to be chastised in front of his father. Yet he could
understand the desire of Lanniya's parents to support her. But Orlaith
was becoming upset. Would Anaeryth be upset? Rogueth wouldn't be able
to control two furious golds... He couldn't break too obviously with
Rhosyn if they were to appear as a united front but he wanted to
defuse this as fast as possible. What he feared was that this was
going to spiral out of control.
"The reason we wished to speak to Lanniya privately is because what
she did so deeply concerns the secrets of the Weyr and the dragons.
You already know the ability we try to keep secret because of its
terrible consequences, and while you know the basics of what has
happened to you, we would prefer non-riders not understand any of the
details," K'ran said. "Surely you can understand that the Weyr must
keep this knowledge private and it would be a violation of honor to
have it further exposed."
But perhaps there was a way to salvage this still, and he thought he
had it. "I would be willing to discuss her punishment now, with you
both in attendance. I will still have to speak with Lanniya about how
she did what she did, but that will be a riders-only conversation."
And one that ideally he would be the only one to have with her. This
many people in a room would make rational discussion impossible...
He folded his hands on the table as he waited for their answer.
}:Please have your family accept this,:{ Rogueth said to the young
goldrider. }:My rider is compromising as best he can.:{
Lanniya's eyes shot up to K'ran's face, then flicked to Rhosyn and
then back to her parents. She swallowed hard; she was torn between
wanting her parents support beside her (she hadn't had them in so
long...) and wanting to feel and be treated more like an adult. But it
was Anaeryth's rumble of complaint and displeasure from the other side
of the Weyr that decided her. She looked at her parents beside her
and spoke. "It's okay, Mama, Papa. I'm not little anymore. Guess it's
time for me to act like it."
Her father squeezed her hand and then exhaled the breath he had
angrily been holding. Both of her parents looked at her, and it was
obvious that they were trying to see her as more grown, but were still
having difficulty. "Alright then." Kandreya finally agreed, then
turned to K'ran and Rhosyn and nodded. She kissed Lanniya's cheek and
stepped away. Pierlin was slower to move, quite obviously having more
difficulty than his wife with his daughter's newfound maturity. He
visibly struggled, then gave a curt nod, pressing his own lips to
Lanniya's brow. "We'll be with your grandparents." Both of the parents
left the room, closing the door quietly behind them and left Lanniya
to face the room of riders. She swallowed and stood straight, mentally
quieting Anaeryth as the gold gave another rumble of disquiet.
