Aughashyth tried his best to comfort the young queen knowing from his
where the injury was and avoiding that side. He crooned and stroked
her neck. }:Yours is strong, lovely Anaeryth. Rest and heal so you may
carry her again.:{
Once they had gone and the door shut, Rhosyn sat down and looked down
at her hide, calming now that situation was over. Not bothering to answer
Y'gel's question since she wouldn't have said what she said if she didn't
think it needed saying, she looked again at Lanniya. Using her voice she
usually spoke with during wing meetings, she turned the conversation to the
next part of this meeting. "Lanniya, each of us are here for a reason. I am here
as the Weyrwoman and as your Wingleader because punishment of my wingriders
falls to me should they neglect their duty. Lenala is here as well as
your wingsecond to help carry out that punishment once decided. Y'gel
is here as Weyrdragonhealer because during what happened Anaeryth was
injured and is still recovering so he is here to weigh that factor and
will be following up with you later to discuss future recovery. K'ran
is here as Weyrleader since the fact that you timed it without
consulting anyone when it involved exposing such a secret to nonriders
makes it Weyr business. K'sedel is here in his capacity as
Weyrlingmaster since this was indeed part of your training during weyrlinghood."
"Besides all of that, we are all here because we are very concerned about
you. Within you and Anaeryth lies the future of our Weyr. It is our job to
make you into the leaders that you need to be. Your history of
impulsiveness and dangerous choices have led us to wonder what we
should do to make sure that you and your dragon manage to survive the
coming turns as well as to prepare you for the time when you will need
to make decisions that could effect an entire Weyr." Clearing her
throat, Rhosyn looked over at Lenala again, remembering the other night.
"Your grandfather came to me looking for you. He was very worried and
didn't know where you were. He thought I knew where you were. Imagine
my surprise when I didn't and I looked all over the Weyr and asked
everyone and Orlaith couldn't reach Anaeryth. Your grandfather, who
had already lost your parents, could have well lost you too. Would
that have been fair?"
"So after candlemarks of trying to find you, I was left with the
thought that my junior goldrider could be lost somewhere on Pern where
I couldn't find her. She could be hurting. She could be... Well
anyhow, and it's a very bad feeling when you can't do a thing about
it. Lenala tried the other Weyrs to see if any of them had seen you."
Going quiet for a few moments, Rhosyn played with the
hide on the table. Then she picked her head back up again. "After
discussing what's happened, we feel that you are not yet ready to be a
wingrider. So for the foreseeable future, you will be joining K'sedel
and the weyrlingstaff to go through all of the training aspects again
and finetune areas that you have shown issues with. Lenala, K'sedel,
and myself will meet regularly with you to discuss your progress and
when you have proven yourself ready, you can rejoin the wing. You will
also be denied your flight privileges except in the line of duty or
when you are chaperoned and have permission to leave the Weyr for now.
Both Vilarth and Orlaith understand Anaeryth shouldn't be leaving
otherwise."
"I know I speak for all of us when I say we are very glad that you and
Anaeryth were able to return and that the injuries weren't more
severe, but this should have never happened so we have to make sure it
does not again." She turned her head to look around at the others.
"Does anyone else wish to speak or to ask questions before Lanniya has
the floor?"
K'ran shook his head. He wanted to see what Lanniya had to say, first.
Then he would decide what to do next.
Why did Rhosyn always speak to her like she was some sort of idiot?
She knew why they were here; she didn't need it explained to her. Her
back stiffened defensively. What history? She'd always behaved before
this and if it hadn't been for her being tired, she wouldn't have made
the mistake of coming back a little late! And she'd studied the charts
and everything! What, did they think she just was able to randomly
find the right time and area? She wasn't stupid! She'd consulted
F'lin, but she wasn't about to get him in trouble too.
Her jaw began to set at the sense of guilt that Rhosyn was trying to
push at her; she'd already been scolded roundly by her grandparents
for worrying them. She felt bad enough about that without Rhosyn
reminding her. Unaware that her face was broadcasting her irritation,
defensiveness, and stubbornness, Lanniya glanced around at the
assembly. "It's not going to happen again. There's no reason for it
to." The words were a bit sharp and not in the slightest apologetic.
Y'gel saw the reaction as clearly as if Lanniya were his daughter
Gelira. This was not going to go well and the way Rhosyn kept
attacking the girl and speaking _at_ her instead of _to_ her could
threaten any chance of Lanniya understanding and modifying her behavior.
}:Mine says be careful. Or yours will lose her completely. She isn't
sorry and she isn't going to be no matter what you say. This is a
teenager thing. She isn't going to agree with you but she will obey if
you say it right.:{ Of course he knew Lanniya could hear Aug relay
the message to Orlaith. Of course Aughashyth had had his own
conversations with the young goldrider. }:She wants to be a good
weyrwoman.:{ he added on his own.
K'sedel could see where this was going to go - the thought of having
to transfer away a young, untested goldrider because things had got
out of hand wasn't high on his agenda. "Perhaps we should adjourn for
the moment and take time to collect our thoughts?" he suggested.
That sounded like a good way to de-escalate, K'ran thought.
**Rogueth** - he thought.
}:My rider would like to see yours tonight for dinner,:{ the bronze
said just to Lanniya. }:To talk.:{
"We're glad to hear it won't happen again, Lanniya," K'ran said aloud
in the meeting room, modulating his tone to be more gentle than either
of the goldriders had been.
"Unfortunately, because of the severe complications this event has
caused, the restrictions on you are going to be necessary for a bit.
You'll be receiving more information from the weyrlingmasters on their
expectations of your new duties. Otherwise, do you have any
questions before we adjourn?"
Y'gel breathed a sigh of relief. He wondered if they all could find a
way to help all of them navigate this issue without one or more goldriders
blowing up in their faces.
}:She doesn't have to agree. She has to understand. And she clearly does
not so she may very well endanger herself and her dragon in some other
fashion again until she does.:{ Orlaith's tone belied her anger, which was
reflecting her rider's, but there was also the note of general weariness and
the stress she and Rhosyn were under with the developing eggs taking a toll
on her body. }:It is our job to take care of them and we will do what is best
even if they do not understand. My rider tried to be different but it did not
work. Anaeryth's went behind her back and did this thing with clear intentions
and planning for some time. So now she will be another way if she has to be
to make her be what she needs to be:{
There were a few other words she could have said in response to Lanniya's
assertion, but at that moment, Rhosyn was too tired. She was done with dealing
with everyone else's mistakes. Let them all burn the Weyr down if they wanted to.
They'd all find a way to blame it on their Weyrwoman, probably. Hoping there wouldn't
be any other questions so she could leave, she tapped Lenala's thigh with her finger
under the table. **I'd like to see what she thinks after this.**
