Coming out of the meeting with K'ran, K'sedel, Lenala, and Lanniya-Rhosyn was spitting mad. She was trying to keep herself placid on the outside so as not to scare the girl or upset Orlaith who was full of eggs, but she seriously wanted to punch something. **How could she put Anaeryth into such danger when they could have died! There were no signs that she had already done it. None. And after what had happened when she betweened and what we talked about! The girl has no sense and doesn't give a wherry shite about her Weyr. So selfish.**
Yes, Lanniya was young, but there was a line between just being young and being stupid. The Weyrwoman had tried to give her the benefit of the doubt, but she was concerned that maybe she had been completely wrong. Worse, Lanniya had directly disobeyed orders since Rhosyn had told her to never do anything that would risk her gold in such a way already. Insubordination was not something she took lightly. "Lenala, I know I should feel relieved they came back allright, but all I can think of is how I want to shake her."
"Calm down, Rhosyn," Lenala said. She was feeling oddly calm herself, detached almost. Like any of this didn't really touch her. "Spitting fire and flame doesn't help in this situation." Well, at least one of them was keeping head cool.
"Well then what do you suggest I do? Pretend like the girl didn't just go and do a fool thing that risked the future of everyone in this Weyr, and the lives of her dragon and herself?" She walked quickly for another few steps or so then slowed down and leaned against the wall of the tunnel. "I never yelled at her. I never gave her any hard talks. I tried to give her a chance. Was I wrong? Should I have seen this coming? Should I have been harder on her?"
"No, I didn't say that. Just that you need to stay calm. Perhaps you should have been harder on her, emphasized the risks and why there are rules and why we have to follow them. Some people are pliable and follow rules by nature," like herself, "Others need firmer guidance." Lenala said. Deep down she wondered if the problem was that Rhosyn had pushed her for Lenala to train. Of course, that part was not what she had been expected to train to Lanniya. She had taught the girl proper etiquette (what little she seemed to learn), Mating Flights and Clutchings and the duties of goldrider. Rest had been covered by Weyrlingmaster.
"Well now it's K'sedel's responsibility to beat it into her head. Then, when she's older, we'll try again. Hopefully, she'll live that long since she seems determined not to." Rhosyn growled under her breath with her frustration then took a few deep breaths and straightened up. "I need a drink."
"She is very young. She needs to mature first," Lenala agreed with her in that. "Drink can be arranged," she continued. "The way she disregards authority or rules if they don't fit her plans and stubborness... does she remind you of anybody we know?" Lenala asked with a faint smile.
"Right but I never put Orlaith or myself in danger. If it was just recklessness, that's one thing. But she endangered her dragon, herself, and her Weyr which makes this something else entirely. If she has no respect for those things, how could she ever have a regard for her wingmates when she's flying thread? Because apparently she doesn't care about the rest of us at all." That was what really upset the Weyrwoman. Walking next to Lenala, she let their shoulders touch-once again thanking Faranth at least her Wingsecond had some sense.
"You've always put the Weyr first," Lenala said and touched Rhosyn comfortingly. She did agree with Rhosyn, she was just calmer about. After all, Lanniya was alive, her dragon was alive. Yes, she had acted foolishly and recklessly. Hopefully she would learn from this.
"Maybe I could see if High Reaches had any junior queens that wanted to come to the southern beaches? Maybe that would learn Lanniya how good she has it. I hear Warleean up there is serious. She sleeps with her boots on." She wasn't really serious but it begged the question-if Lanniya never learned, Rhosyn would have to do something.
"And let them have our Hears-all-dragons?" Lenala asked.
"Even if she can Hear, she's no good if she won't listen. Shells I wish Briata had Impressed." Rhosyn looked up for a moment and then rubbed her forehead. "In the meantime...ahh I smell ale."
"I could take a wine myself," Lenala said. "Briata would have been more sensible, but Anaeryth chose her. She either matures out of it or gets herself killed. She might turn out to be excellent Weyrwoman one day. If she survives."
"It would be such a waste if she doesn't. We can't afford to lose Anaeryth or someone like her with such potential. Hopefully, she'll wake up and fly straight." When they reached the Dining Cavern, Rhosyn offered Lenala a wineskin before she grabbed an ale for herself.
"Sometimes it takes something dramatic to make a person mature," Lenala said and poured herself a generous glass of wine.
