The music had started. They had already made some of the rounds.
Rhosyn had gotten a few bites down and was watching the rest of the
crowd. Drinking the last of the wine in her glass, she set it down on
a passing tray.
K'ran noticed her movement and mirrored it, setting aside his own
glass so that his hands were free. Of course his first dance of the
night should be with Rhosyn, and truthfully he was eager to show them
off as a united front at this, their, hatching. "Shall we?"
"Indeed." She had been a lover of dancing for a good long while and
fortunately her size made it easy for her to be good at it. Smiling, she
gave him her hand and prepared to follow. **Is this going to be fast or
slow?**
It was a dance quick enough to be enjoyable, but not as rapid-paced as
the toss dance. K'ran gave Rhosyn a broad smile, pleased by the music,
the wine, and how everything had gone. "Is it still exciting for you?"
he asked as they stepped onto the dance platform.
"Every one of them is different." She tried not to think about how awful
she had felt at Anaeryth's hatching despite the fact that it meant another
gold dragon for the Weyr. Hopefully that hadn't been a harbinger for things
to come. "But aye there is always the anticipation and I love being able to
plan the parties. It's just hard when things go wrong since it's so
very public."
Her mind went back to Vilarth's hatching, wondering if K'ran had visited for
that. "But today was wonderful. Tell Rogueth fine job!"
She held onto him as she felt herself twirled about, unable to stop herself
from laughing. She knew others were watching. The truth was, though, she
had no past with K'ran so things with him had been a clean slate. So far, she
found it easy to be around him. With most of the drama behind them for now,
she hoped, they could settle into easy working days.
"He was thrilled. I think he'll be thrilled for the next few
sevendays, until he forgets," K'ran admitted. "I've never felt this
exposed to the public before. It's a little nerve-wracking."
"Well after today most of them will go home and it'll be business as usual."
Of course this had been the first time most of them were seeing and meeting
their new Weyrleader so there was always that. As time went on, that would
change. "Public opinion matters, don't get me wrong." The situation between
Dolphin Cove and Emerald Falls was enough to prove that. "But only to a
point. At the end of the day, if you do your job-fardles on the rest."
Of course that was coming from a Weyrwoman that most of the South had called
Whorewoman one time or another and did what she pleased most of the time
as it came to that. Rhosyn had learned long ago if she didn't please herself
then no one else was going to see to it for her.
"Well, I hope they were impressed," he said. The opinion of the public
had been on his mind. He was an unknown quantity to the Weyr and to
the region. He hoped his leadership over the past few months had been
proven well to the Weyrfolk, and that the holds and halls they oversaw
had found no fault.
Putting her hand toward his shoulder, she sought to reassure him with a
confident noise. "Lord Bryvin was very pleased with our support after the
hurricane so I don't think you've anything to worry with over him." Her next
step was a little quicker to follow the changing beat of the music.
"I am glad the Lord is pleased, and I hope the others are as well." He
had spoken to several today already but he would make sure to speak
to the rest before they departed.
Then he dared to ask the other question on his mind. "And you,
Weyrwoman? Are you pleased with me so far?"
Ready to blurt out the first answer that came to mind, Rhosyn stopped herself.
Her mind rushed through the possibilities of that question. Her answer could
mean so many different things taken in different ways. K'ran wasn't a very
complicated person from what she'd seen of him. It was likely he was just
wondering what she thought, not anything further. "I'm still trying to figure you
out in some ways, but so far things have been good. Today has been the first
time I've enjoyed myself in awhile."
As the music slowed, coming to an end, she pushed herself towards him more.
"And you? I'm sure most are wondering how I haven't managed to run you off
yet. Or maybe they think I tie you up at night with the watchwher. Hmmm..."
Rhosyn's streak of perverse humor came to the fore as she considered the image
of him curled up in the wher den with a chain collar on his neck.
"I went in this with an open mind about you, willing to work with what
you offered. After all, River Bluff is yours, while my job is only as
long as I have it," he said, knowing it was true. "So far I have no
complaints. You run your wing and your domain well, and you've not
tried to dictate how I run mine or shout down all of my choices. So
I'd say I have no complaints."
As for the watchwher comment, it gave him a laugh. "She's pleasant
company and it would be cooler in her den," K'ran said.
In the past, it had been the opposite. Rhosyn had been the new leader.
K'sedel had been Weyrleader already for so many turns. Maybe that's
what had made things different. She didn't know. It was nice to hear
someone else thought of River Bluff as hers though.
"Might have to remember that for later," quipped back the goldrider as
the music ended. Clapping her appreciation with the others, she leaned
into her Weyrleader. "There are a few others you should talk to before
the night is over. If you need me, just tell Rogueth to tell Orlaith
if you don't see me. I've got to see if my nephew was allowed to come."
"I hope he was. I had a rider go for my brother, so I've got to go see
him, ask what he thought." K'ran gave Rhosyn a quick hug before
stepping away. He wondered if any of his Dragonsfall friends had
come...
