Getting Ready

Writers: Chelle

Description: The Weyr prepares for a Hatching
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 6, day 20 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: K'ran

Since she was quite grounded and the time was getting closer and closer, the Weyrwoman had taken to cloistering herself off with her Headwoman more and more often. This Hatching was going to be different, she had decided. Rhosyn wanted it to be her way and she thought her idea was just the thing. Luckily, Solieira was more than happy to go along with her Weyrwoman. The Headwoman and her staff were hard at work setting up and making ready for the event which was likely to happen any day at this point.

As usual, the rest of the Weyr was also well aware that a Hatching was coming. This wasn't just any hatching, though. It was the first one that Rogueth had ever sired. It would be Orlaith's first clutch by a bronze other than Nikornath. Many were curious to see how things would go, though there were certainly a fine number of eggs on the Sands warming under the Senior Queen's watchful care.

Standing straight, Solieira began to count the number of tables and chairs. The weather was supposed to remain sunny and free of rain. She was sincerely hoping the eggs would crack before threadfall came or things turned rainy. They had started the day before. Moving out all the tables and chairs, they had then taken to creating a stage area for the harpers and a large flat, wooden square for dancing. There was a platform off to the right that held the Weyrleaders' table.

"So have you decided whether or not to cook in the kitchens and bring it out or to cook outside?" Rhosyn came up beside her, looking out over their progress as drudges continued working.

"I think outside is best. Your menu with the choice of grilled fish, roasted herdbeast, or grilled wherry should give them plenty of choices. And the vegetables can be grilled or prepared beforehand and just heated up and served. The bread can be baked in the cook fires here too." The beverages would have to be kept cool, though. Solieira was going to leave them in one of the smaller caves nearby the River and just bring the casks out as needed.

"And the smells will likely add more smiles to their faces." Placing her hand on the tablecloth that was spread over the table, Rhosyn saw the bottom black cloth overlaid with the shimmery silver on top. They were the Weyr's colors, of course, but also
quite elegant. They contrasted well with the lanterns that were swaying in rows above the entire feast space. Those were River Bluff orange, waiting for their glows to be placed inside when the time came. "I've already warned the harpers not to expect their
usual space in the Dining Cavern."

Chuckling, the older woman bent down and crossed off something from her list. "I think the younger ones will see it as an adventure. It'll be more like what they do at the Hold gathers. Hopefully it isn't too windy though. The dolphins are saying clear, warm, and bright. For all our sakes, I hope they're right, Weyrwoman."

"Ah well, we can always go inside if worse comes to worse. It won't be as much fun. And it'll mean we did all this for nothing, but hey-sometimes you just have to deal with what life throws at you." Biting her lip, the goldrider turned her hazel eyes toward the flower baskets being placed on the tables. The arrangements were large-the flowers were bright and had been brought from the tropical jungles below the Weyr. The Weyrfolk had outdone themselves for sure.

Knowing the small goldrider had quite a few things thrown at her recently, Solieira wisely nodded at that statement. This would be their celebration. Things were just fine at River Bluff. Through whatever came, they continued. Smiling to herself, she caught the attention of a passing drudge. "Make sure there is plenty of drinking water should folk from elsewhere become overheated." The beach was nearby should any of them want to venture down to the water.

Rhosyn herself would need to let all invited guests know they should dress for the warm outside weather and not the coolness of the caverns inside the Weyr's rocky cliff face. Most of the invitations had gone out by firelizards already to give people time to choose wardrobes. She herself wondered what K'ran was going to say about hers. **Perhaps I'll show him tonight.** Despite herself, she was excited for this Hatching, so different from the others she had gone to recently or even celebrated as her own. Hoping everyone enjoyed it, she found herself leaning against Solieira.

"Go on with you. These old bones have a hard time standing as it is. Go get some rest. The next few days will likely be very busy for you," the headwoman chided quietly.

"I know....I'm going. I swear. Let me know if you need anything, though. It looks great." Indeed, they had transformed the area near the river and the trees into a lovely event space. The feast and celebrations would be held outside this time, within view of the Weyr and the ocean. Looking up at the sky which would twinkle beautifully above them on hatching night, Rhosyn closed her eyes for a few moments. Then, taking her headwoman's advice, she headed back to the Weyr.
