They started coming sometime that morning. The main building at the hall was there, but there wasn't much else left. There wasn't food to feed them or anywhere comfortable for most of them to sleep. The men had stayed behind to work but the women and children and some of the others were there. Messages had been sent ahead so Citrus Bay knew to expect them. It wasn't the full population since others had left to the main Hold or gone elsewhere before the storm. There were quite a few seeking shelter though. Relik hadn't come himself. He was there with his men. Other hall staff had come though.
Tents had been erected around the main keep to serve as temporary shelter for the refugees. Depending on how long they needed shelter, Runnfreya and the Citrus Bay Headwoman would begin moving refugees into the main hold, giving families top priority.
Food tents had been set up outside and were prepared to feed whoever showed up.
Nerylyn was holding tightly on her younger children's hands. The older ones were smart enough to stay close to their mother. They had been, like all non-essential personnel and families, evacuated from the Hall. To the children, this was a grand adventure, while Nerylyn worried: worried about her husband, left behind to repair the damage to the Hall.
Raghad was talking with his steward and workers, about where to set up more shelters. Citrus Bay had taken some damage during the Hurricane, but it was minor compared to what the Seacraft Hall had suffered. One of the older houses had collapsed, one fishing boat had been tossed to the shore, and tavern had broken window-shutter. He didn't know yet how the vineyards, orchards or the other plantation had fared.
Jolusik had been an apprentice. The lad was too young to help with much of anything and he was another mouth to feed. So he had gone with the others to Citrus Bay. Looking around, he walked along behind the others, sipping from his waterskin. He had never seen anything like this. He'd never been at sea yet. It was scary, almost, how fast everything could be gone.
Someone guided Nerylyn and the children to a tent which would be theirs for the duration of their stay in Citrus Bay. "Come on, children, get your bags in," Nerylyn said, keeping a smile on her face.
"Ooh, this is like being on camping!" Gotner said and crawled in. They all had just one bag with few spare clothes and necessities.
"Yes, just like camping," Nerylyn agreed. Thank Faranth that Uegot had a habit of taking his family for over-night trips so they were all used to sleeping in a tent.
Runnfreya was walking down among those arriving, for once her typically flashy garments replaced with a sensible ankle-length navy skirt and crisp, white collared shirt. The lady of Citrus Bay had left her more whimsical shoes behind in favor of a pair of sturdy boots, which made the ground beneath her squish from all of the rain that had fallen.
She watched the little family as they laid claim to a tent. Her heart squeezed as she looked at the faces of the children, blissfully unaware for the real reason they were 'camping.'
"Is there anything I can get for you or your children? Clothes, bedding, anything?" She aimed the question at the woman she guessed to be the mother of the children.
"We could do with few extra blankets, please," Nerylyn replied after look around and taking stock what was inside the tent.
The apprentices were setup in a tent of their own. They'd be sleeping together, just like the barracks. That made Jolusik feel better. He put his carisak in the tent and decided to stay awhile before worrying about food. Some of the other boys had decided to do the same thing.
Marfe had promised to help. Running around all over the place, he was delivering blankets, food, clothes, and whatever else he was asked to bring over. Seeing the Lady, he walked over. "My Lady, is there anything else needed now?"
Runnfreya looked up at Marfe, glad to see him show up just in time. "Yes, this young mother here was just saying that she could use some extra blankets. Be a doll and fetch those?" Her eyelashes fluttered.
"Blankets. Yes Lady," he mumbled before shuffling off.
"Thank you, Marfe." She called after him.
"Thank you," Nerylyn said too.
Raghad started the walking around, seeing with satisfaction that his wife had everything under control. As he had come to expect. This was going to put a strain on their resources but it was nothing they couldn't handle.
