Description: The new Weyrleader talks to the bronzerider who's been serving as Wingsecond.
Location: River Bluff Weyr
Date: month 4, day 22 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: K'sedel
K'ran poured himself another mug of klah and closed his eyes, thinking
about who he wanted to speak to next. He wanted to speak with everyone
of rank who he needed to coordinate with, of course, but he had to
prioritize the order of individual meetings. The wing that would be
his was a good place to start.
}:Seneth, my rider wishes to meet with yours,:{ Rogueth said to the
younger bronze.
}:He will come to yours' office,:{ came the prompt reply. Seneth had
picked up on his rider's emotions and was eager to please the strange
bronze dragon who had won their queen.
There was a knock at the door a moment later and F'lin entered. He
stuck his hand out in greeting. "Nice to meet you properly,
Weyrleader. Welcome to River Bluff Weyr."
K'ran smiled at the younger bronzerider, taking his hand and giving it
a firm shake. "Thank you for the greeting. How are you and Seneth?"
"Well." F'lin sat across from K'ran and tried to look unaffected. This
was his Wingleader and Weyrleader, and the man who would decide what
would happen to his knots. And he knew _nothing_ about him. "Thank you
for asking. I hope that you and Rogueth are beginning to settle in?"
"Feel free to pour some klah, make yourself comfortable," K'ran invited.
"Rogueth is thrilled to be warm again. I've moved around Weyrs enough
I know the drill, if not quite this much of a status change. I like to
travel," he added by way of explanation. There was sometimes a bad
reputation about riders who transferred a lot. His had been
wanderlust, not his leaders being disappointed in him.
**Travel.** That meant that K'ran likely knew some of the major
political players in the South already. It might also mean that K'ran
would move on again at some point. "I'm glad that Rogueth likes the
heat and I hope you'll grow to like it too. It's one thing that we
have in abundance here," he said blandly.
"Heat and fish seem to be the constants of seaside Weyrs, it's nice,"
K'ran said. It was tempting to keep doing small talk, but he knew that
would waste both F'lin's time and his. So he looked down at the
bronzerider's record one more time before speaking again.
"According to records, you've been Rapid's acting Wingsecond for a few
months. Then you were unexpectedly put on the spot when Weyrleader
K'sedel was injured, and have been leading Rapids since then, though
Torrent Wing has been set to high altitude for the Falls and Rapids
has been mid, just like at today's Fall."
He paused, waiting to see if F'lin would make any corrections.
The younger bronzerider nodded. "When K'sedel was injured, the
adjustment was made because of me. Not Rapids. They're a solid Wing
and know what they're doing." It pained him to say it, but it had to
be said. **The good of the Weyr.** He hated his grandmother for
drilling it into him. Pern before the Weyr. The Weyr before the Wing.
The Wing before himself.
"Everything I've heard about your performance so far has been good,
and I was very impressed with how you handled the wing today," K'ran added.
"Thank you." F'lin shrugged. "Like I said, they're a good Wing.
They'll appreciate taking the high altitude position again."
"I can't blame them. It must be frustrating to drop down to mid, but
they'll be back at high in month 5," he said confidently.
The part that worried him was how close the next 'fall was, and if
he'd be solid leading Rapids by then. "I see the next Threadfall is
later this sevenday," he mentioned.
"Right before the rest day. I can walk you through the basics of our
Wing formations today, if you'd like. And the ways that Rapids
drills." K'ran was probably eager to take over the Wing as well as the
Weyr, but with Thread less than a sevenday away, F'lin was cautious
about breaking routine.
"I'd appreciate that. You and the Wingthird are the two who know them
best. I was thinking I might drill in the 'second position and let you
lead on tomorrow's drills, so I can go through them once before having
to run them," he added, wondering what the younger bronzerider would think.
"Probably a good idea." A better idea would be to watch from the
ground to get a sense of how Rapids worked before trying to integrate,
but F'lin wasn't going to tell his new Weyrleader how to do his job.
Who knew-- maybe K'ran would surprise him and integrate seamlessly
into aerial drills. "I'd be happy to talk you through it."
"And believe me, I'll appreciate it. After all, I'll be relying on you
a lot the next few sevendays, Wingsecond."
F'lin didn't miss the way K'ran said his title. He tried to suppress
his grin. "Whatever you need, Weyrleader. Just let me know."
"I will. I've got a few more meetings today, but I may drop by your
office after dinner if I need to go over anything else."
"Sure thing." There was always hidework to do... "If I'm not there,
have Rogueth contact Seneth and I'll come find you."
"Will do, though you may regret that," K'ran quipped. He found he
really liked F'lin, so far. He was looking forward to seeing how they
worked together.
