Lanniya

The reports had come in. The storm had caused minor damage at the
Weyr. However, in other parts of River Bluff's territory, things
hadn't been so lucky. They would need to send out sweepriders to
assess the damage and determine who would need assistance but first it
would be good to get everyone on the same page. Rhosyn sat there at
the wing meeting table in her usual chair, sipping water. **Things
just keep coming. Shardit all! I can't just have one minute to
breathe!** She had copies of the report under her fingertips but more
were coming in through the drums, firelizards, watchdragons, and other
sources.

A'kades had shown up to the meeting as the weyrlingstaff's
representative. Orlaith's latest had just graduated to the wings and
were no longer his responsibility. Vilarth's clutch was too young to
help outside of the Weyr, but the weyrlings would be able to assist
with internal duties, like helping organize, bag, and load supplies to
be transported by other riders. They could also help with cleaning up
the localized damage. **Good for their physical conditioning, if
nothing else,** the bronzerider thought.

F'lin entered and nodded in greeting to Rhosyn before claiming a seat
at the table next to A'kades.

Lenala was back on her feet and doing her duties as much as her
present condition allowed. Without a word, she walked in and added a
new pile of messages to the pile on the table. She sat down to her
customary place, her manner listless and unenergetic.

Lanniya came in, her normal ebullient personality muted after the
hurricane. The storms had sent her into a fright and she had
childishly ran to her grandparents living area to wait it out. She
_hated_ storms; hated hearing them and hated knowing what they did.
She was quiet as she came in, face wan.

A'kades offered Lanniya an encouraging smile. She was going to have to
step up to help out, but he had faith that she would do fine today,
even if she had been scared.

}:My rider has faith in yours,:{ Volaith told Anaeryth, aware that the
rider would hear as well and sense their approval.

"My apologies," K'lvin said as he came in to the room and took the
seat that would normally have been occupied by K'sedel. Of course a
hurricane would come and nearly wipe the Seacraft Hall off the map
while _he_ was Acting Weyrleader. He'd thought that it wouldn't be too
different from what he had already been doing as Wingleader, but now
they had hurricane damage to deal with, K'sedel was no closer to
returning, and Orlaith had that look about her that meant she was on
the verge of Rising- which tended to make bronzeriders act peculiar.
Oh, and add to that he was a new father who was still trying to enjoy
his baby daughter and weyrmate, and K'lvin was a very busy man.

"More messages to add with what we've already received." He told
Rhosyn as he slipped the papers her way, having already read the
correspondences.

She nodded and saw that everyone was gathered. "Well everyone, the
reports are in. The Weyr has suffered a bit of damage but nothing
heavy. Jade Harbor is fine. Sunstone has minor damage. The problem is
Sunstone's territory. We're going to have to send out sweeps and
probably provide support. By all accounts the seacraft hall suffered
the most. Lord Bryvin will do what he can, but our riders are faster
and better able to get to some places." She looked around at all of
them. The Holds, tithe, and diplomacy were Rhosyn's spheres of
influence. "I think it will be best if someone is at Sunstone to
coordinate. We can send out sweeps and provide assistance from here.
The Weyr itself will be my responsibility. While we deal with this,
though, we have to maintain readiness. We may have to ration due to
the tithes being smaller."

A'kades nodded as he listened. "Unfortunately, the weyrling class
isn't old enough for sweep duty yet, but they're good for any
localized help we need here, moving, cleaning, the like."

"We have stores and we can ask the inland holds for extra tithe.
We're not going to starve," Lenala said, pushing herself to pay
attention and to do her duties. She was trying to overcome her grief.
but sometimes it was far too easy to succumb to the depression.

"I'll volunteer Rapids for extra Sweep duty," F'lin put in. He glanced
at Lanniya briefly, then looked away. This was the first time he'd
been at the table for a hurricane's aftermath, and he was finding that
it cut a little too close to home. "Rapids has been taking the Sweeps
in that direction anyway. They'll be familiar with the coastline."

K'lvin was thinking about what Rhosyn had said, that they would need
to place someone at Sunstone to coordinate things there. "As for who
will go to Sunstone, what about Jaylene or K'dee?" As the Weyrleader's
Wingthird, Jaylene was an obvious choice, however, the fact that she
rode a green was somewhat limiting, in K'lvin's view, as it didn't
strike the same command into the Holds folk as a bronze did. K'dee at
least had a dragon that people respected, and he'd had interactions
with the Sunstone Holders before.

"I'd like Jaylene with me." F'lin shook his head. It was hard to admit
how much he'd leaned on her the past few sevendays, but he _did_ need
her. "K'dee is a good choice. Or U'das." His gaze skittered sideways.
"Or-- Lanniya, if you feel up to it." In the face of a hurricane she
would need something to do. Something to drown out the memories,
something to make her feel useful and powerful in the face of an event
she couldn't control.

At the mention of sending Lanniya, K'lvin spoke up again, "I'm thinking
we would need someone more experienced...." He meant no disrespect to
the young goldrider, but she was still a child in his eyes, and
already shaken from the events that took place during the hurricane.

"So, send someone more experienced with her. Someone who knows the
people and can gently guide her. Like U'das," Lenala suggested. "He
knows how to talk to people like Master Relik and he's been involved
in training Lanniya, so she won't get offended if he tells her what to do."

A'kades offered her a little smile. "I was going to suggest either
myself or U'das go with Lanniya, since we're bronzeriders and can add
extra authority to her position, and the other one could stay with the
weyrlings and oversee the local work."

Rhosyn had been quiet, listening to the suggestions brought up. "Part of
Lanniya's duties as a goldrider in the future will be working with the holders.
It will be a good chance for her to do that. Besides, young or not-she's a
queenrider which will mean deference given. The best part-since she can
Hear it will be easier for her to coordinate through the dragons. If U'das
goes with her, I'd say it'll be fine. He knows the seafolk certainly." Rhosyn
pointedly looked over in her newest wingrider's direction to see if she wanted
to.

Lanniya hadn't said much, just watched with large, tired eyes. She
just nodded as they spoke about her as if she wasn't there. It may
have annoyed her a trifle before this, but at that point, she simply
just wanted the whole experience over with. She would have liked to go
with F'lin, but didn't think an argument at this point would be a good
idea.

"Allright so U'das and Lanniya will be at the Hold. K'lvin can assign an area for
each wingleader who would still be responsible for scheduling sweeps. I'll work
with the headwoman and the candidate and weyrling crews here at the Weyr as
well as the weyrfolk to get this place back in shape. Lanniya, if you or U'das need
extra supplies or anything sent over, let us know." Her eyes were downcast for a
moment. "I don't know what we're going to see out there. Towards the Hall it sounds
pretty bad. So warn your wingriders." Seeing someone die in threadfall was one thing.
This would be something else.

"I'll contact the Holds not affected by the Hurricane and make sure we
don't run out of supplies," Lenala promised quietly.
