The baby had finally entered the birth canal and was almost crowning when
something happened and the progress stopped.
Marcina could only scream with pain while her body tried to push the baby
out, who seemed to be stuck.

"Try to breathe slowly and deeply," advised Miranek. He knew it wouldn't be
easy, but he just needed a moment to see that the baby was not in too much
distress. "I'm just going to check on baby."

Marcina did as she was told. Just breathing seem to be an effort that took
concentration.

"You're doing well, dear," Lycina murmured encouragingly and hold her hand.
She was trying to cover her own worry. Things weren't progressing as the
they should.

"Allright," Miranek said after a moment. "Baby is going to need a little
help. I'm going to use forceps to help you next time you push, and that
should let us see baby's head, then the next push after that, the rest of
them. It isn't going to be easy, but it really won't take much longer."

" 'Kay," Macina really had no energy left than for a half a word.

"Here we go," Miranek said as he carefully placed the forceps. "When the
next contraction comes, push, and I'll work with you to help your baby be
born."

"Take a deep breath, dear, you can do this," Lycina encouraged and wipe the
sweat from Marcina's face.

Marcina did take a breath and when the muscles convulsed with the
contraction and pushed with all her strength.

"We have the head," Miranek said as he eased the child into the world. "Your
baby is coming."

It hurt. Marcina never felt a pain like that in her life before. She felt
something give in, tear, just before the baby slipped free.

"You have a son," Miranek said as he lifted the infant into view, ready to
hand off to Marcina's mother. "It looks like he was so eager to get out, he
seems to have hurt you a little, once the afterbirth is delivered, I'll make
sure that's going to be okay."

Lycina took the boy for clean up. The baby was protesting loudly. "And he's
big one too, must be closer to 12 punds," she said, weighting him on her
arms. "Not to mention healthy lungs."

"Good," Marcina said, too exhausted to feel anything right now. "His name is
Rizmar," she said. Something she and her husband had decided awhile ago.
Girl would had been Rizina.

"A good name," Miranek said as he dealt with the afterbirth and cleaning up
the tear the baby had made. "I'm going to use a little numbweed so I can
clean and suture the little tear he's made. I'll make sure that the healers
on duty over the next few days know to check on it as well as your son."

Lycina had given the baby a preliminary exam and now approached Miranek.
"Master, I think the baby has dislocated shoulder or something similar," she
said quietly, so her daughter wouldn't over hear her. She was experienced
enough to spot if something was amiss.

Miranek kept his face straight as he finished the few stitches he needed on
the mother. "One moment," he said. it was certainly possible that the labour
had caused it, but popping a shoulder back while not trivial, was something
that could be done fairly easily with a new born.

"Can I have my baby, please," Marcina asked.

"In a moment, dear. let the healer check him first. He does had a good
lungs," Lycina replied.

Gently Miranek took the child and laid him down, feeling around the injury.
"Yes, it does seem like it's out of place, while he's this small, we should
be able to gently ease it back, and he should probably quiet down a little
then, I think he's trying to tell us that it hurts." The healer began the
careful manipulation needed to ease the shoulder back into place.

"What hurts?" Marcina was alarmed.

Lycina went to calm her down. "The shoulder is out of the place. Possibly
due the difficult birth. I'm sure it will all right."

"There we go," Miranek started to say, as he looked at his handiwork. It
didn't look quite right, but there was a chance of a little swelling,
perhaps when that went down, and he tried to move his arm a little. "I'm
just going to wrap him in a blanket, and then you and young Rizmar can get
to know each other, while I have a quick word with your mother."

"Oh, he's so perfect," Marcina crooned when she get her son to her arms. She
was busy studying his tiny face while Lycina gave the master a worried look.

"I'm worried about his arm," Miranek said softly. "I'm not sure yet, but I
think there may be something. It's a little swollen now, but I'm going to
need someone who knows what to look for to keep an eye out over the next few
days. It might be nothing, but I'd rather be cautious and just check he's
able to move it properly and doesn't seem to be in pain."

"I'll keep an eye on them," Lycina promised.

"Good, and don't worry her unnecessarily, it might be nothing at all."

Lycina just nodded her agreement and watched her daugheter and grand-son.

"in the mean time, I'll leave you two to get to know him." Miranek gathered
together his equipment. "I'll be outside, or one of the other healers if you
need anything at all."

"Thank you, master Miranek," Lycina said.
