Description: Fooling around while doing inventory makes the work more fun.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 4, day 6 of Turn 8
Yanley was humming under her breath while she counted the items on a self.
In place as big as Weyr, there was always store room or two under
inventory. She had two other people helping her to do the inventory.
Jessmyr was writing down the notes.
"Five pairs of boots, size huge," Yanley reported.
"What is size huge?" Jess asked.
"Big enough I could wear them on my head," Yanley grinned.
"I'll just write it down as men's boots," Jess snorted, half laughing. He
always enjoyed working with Lady Yanley.
Elona giggled. "Does anyone really have feet that big? They're enormous. I
could fit all of Elonus' toys in one of them."
"I could fit in whole Daley there," Yanley replied and put the boots back
to a neat row. "I suppose someone must have large feet like that."
"Judging by the dust on them, not many," Elona remarked. She picked up a
smaller pair. "These look more like it."
"Women's boots," Yanley took a look at them. "How many are there?"
"Three- no, four pairs." Elona picked up a pair in black and looked at them
wistfully. They were so pretty, simple but well-made. Not that there was
anything wrong with her boots.
"Now, those are fine ones. Are they your size?" Yanley asked.
"I think so, but I don't need any boots yet." Reluctantly, Elona placed
them back on the shelf.
"Five pairs of breeches," Yanley told to Jessmyr who nodded and dutifully
jotted it down. She did give Elona a long look, deciding that she deserved
something nice for herself. If not boots, then perhaps shoes or something
else. "It's not always what you need. Sometimes you just needs something to
feel pretty," she said to Elona. "Check what's in that basket over there,
please."
"All right." Elona walked over to the basket, opened it and peered inside.
"Scarves," she said, "lots of them." She reached in and drew out a handful
of them, all hand knitted.
"Lovely. We are going to need them during the winter," Yanley noted.
"I need a number," Jess remarked.
"There's enough here for half the Weyr." Elona placed them back. "I'm sure
you could find some you like."
"Half a Weyr isn't accurate," Jess complained.
"Basket full of scarfs is accurate enough," Yanley said. She kneeled to
peer into to the lowest shelf. "Shells, there are all covered with dust. No
one been in this shelf for ages!" She pulled out several pair of shoes.
Including high heeled ladies feast shoes.
"Can anyone actually walk in those?" Elona asked. She'd never tried, unless
she counted her mother's shoes when she was a kid.
"Yes, it does take a bit of practise and I wouldn't want to wear them whole
day," Yanley replied. She had few pairs like these of her own. After wiping
the dust off, she tried them on her feet. "Too small. Here, you try them,
Elona. Perhaps they fit you."
"Oh I couldn't…" Elona looked from Yanley to Jessmyr and back. "Could I?"
"Yes, you can," Yanley said firmly. "Every woman needs something totally
useless and luxurious," she continued.
Jessmyr just shrugged, having no opinion on the matter one way or the other.
Elona took the shoes and sat on a box to pull off her boots and replace
them. They fit, but she still wasn't sure about walking. Gingerly, she rose
to her feet and put out her arms as she teetered.
"I must look silly," she said.
"Just bit wobbly," Jess said.
"Shift your weight forward, like you would be walking on your toes," Yanley
adviced. "And pull you spine straight. Keep your head up."
Elona took a few more steps, trying to take Yanley's advice. She reached
the far wall and teetered to a stop. "I think I'll take some practice." She
leaned against the wall and tugged the shoes off before returning barefoot
to where she'd left her boots.
"Yes, it does. It also makes your bum look good. What do you say, Jess?"
Yanley said and asked confirmation from the male-source.
Unfortunately, Jess was bad at such things. He never looked people that
way, neither males nor females. "I take your word for it. I really don't
know," he blushed, feeling awkward.
Elona also blushed. "I'm not sure I want anyone looking." She spoke with
her head down, voice slightly muffled.
"Oh, come on, every woman enjoys an admiring look. Even if she was raised
to not to," Yanley said.
Elona was not going to admit to anything. "We should get finished," she
said. "Or we'll be here all day." She put the heeled shoes aside.
"You're right about that. Let's get back to the inventory," Yanley answered.
"Do we classify the belts by brown and black or just count them all
together?"
"Count them all together," Yanley instructed and pulled out a bundle from a
shelf. "What's this?"
"I'm going to guess socks," Elona said, really not knowing at all.
Yanley carefully opened bundle and revealed a couple of tunics, with holes
in them. "Ick. Why are these here? They should have been cut to rags," she
wrinkled her nose.
Elona grimaced. "Yuck, they smell horrible. Maybe someone stashed them
here." She didn't think much of them then.
"Well, they are not worth repairing. Jess, write three tunics for wastage."
"Yes, ma'am," even Jess was wrinkling his nose at the smell.
"I hope there's nothing else nasty like that," Elona said. Goodness knows
what they might find here though.
"If you find a tunnelsnake nest, I'll be the first one to run off
screaming," Jessmyr warned them.
Elona shuddered. "I'll be right behind you, in my sensible boots."
"Where are the big, brave bronzeriders when you need them?" Yanley sighed
dramatically and made a mock swoon. "No sign of tunnelsnakes, so back to
work. She tossed the ruined tunics to a waste pile outside the store room.
Elona grinned at Jessmyr and reached for the next basket on the shelf.
