F'nix

Not that F'nix hadn't been confident before, but since impressing
Nisith he was all but bursting with it, and happiness in general. He
couldn't stop smiling. Even if he had to be celibate, it was worth it
to have his blue.

"Hey," he said cheerfully as he slid into the seat beside Paetri. "Nice day."

Paetri looked up from her meal and offered the stranger a smile.
"Hello." She tilted her head and flicked her gaze over him before her
brows rose and she smiled a little more. "You're one of the new
Weyrlings, aren't you? Congratulations."

"Thanks." His grin widened. "You're a friend of J'kri's, right?" He
poked a tuber with his fork and started cutting it up with his knife.

Her brows rose a bit. "A bit more than a friend, but yes." She didn't
take offense. Her relationship with J'kri really defied any sort of
definition. She kept a warm smile and extended her hand. "I'm Paetri,
rider of green Camilth."

He shook it. "I gather J'kri has a few 'little more than friends'."
That was fine, so did he. "I'm F'nix, blue Nisith is mine. I suppose I
can't call myself his rider just yet."

That stung a bit, but it didn't show on her face. J'kri _did_ have
several lovers, but he loved her the most...didn't he? She pushed the
thought away. She should be confident in her relationship with J'kri.
"You are his rider. You just haven't rode him yet."

F'nix grinned. "I guess you're right. It just doesn't feel real yet,
you know? I thought about impressing every day since I was Searched,
but it's so much more than I thought it'd be."

"I thought the same, really. I think everyone does. It takes a while
for it to really sink in, especially if you're not from the Weyr. It
takes longer then."

"Were you holdbred? I was hallbred." Same thing, pretty much. Not that
F'nix gave his upbringing much thought these days.

"Oh, I was Holdbred. Very holdbred." Her eyes crinkled at the memory
of her first days in the Weyr. "I still have some of the same way of
thinking, but I've changed more than I realized since Impressing
Camilth."

He nodded his understanding. "I think maybe it's a good thing it took
me so long to impress. I had a lot to work out and work through. I
mean- I impressed blue." Luckily that pretty much explained it all.
"If I'd impressed first, I might have freaked out."

"Well, there was no gold on the sands when I Impressed. " Paetri
shrugged. "I wasn't expecting to Impress at all. I only came because I
couldn't find a husband and there wasn't much else for me at home."

"The men back home need their eyes checked," F'nix said gallantly. "I
was lucky enough to have a craft to fall back on, if I needed to fall
back."

She smiled and a dimple appeared. "That's very kind." She sipped her
drink. "Will you continue your craft after you graduate? You can to a
small degree, if you like."

"I can," he agreed. "I'm an artist. I'll probably never stop
sketching, even if I have less time for it."

"Really?" Paetri smiled. "I love art. I can't draw a straight line,
but I enjoy looking at it. Maybe I could look at yours sometime."

"You like looking at straight lines?" he asked teasingly. "I'd be
happy to show you my sketches. It's the one thing I can admit to being
good at. In pubic anyway." He winked.

She blinked for a moment, then laughed, shaking her head. "I could
have put that better, couldn't I?" She then gave a rueful laugh and
shook her finger at him. "Your restriction is going to drive you
crazy, I think."

"Too late," he said ruefully. "I'll survive, because it'll be worth
it. Although the moment the restrictions are lifted…"

She laughed softly and shook her head. "I've heard that so many times."

He sighed dramatically. "And there I thought I was being original," he
joked. "Oh well, I have no regrets. So how long ago did you impress?"

He really was a light hearted sort of fellow and Paetri couldn't help
but like him; she could also see why J'kri did as well. "I Impressed
about a Turn ago. Camilth is..." She chuckled. "At first I thought
she'd chosen the wrong person. She's very outgoing and loves
attention."

"And you're not?" he asked. "Or not yet at least?" Some people took
turns to come out of their proverbial shells. Some never did.

"No, I'm not like that at all." She admitted. "I doubt I ever will be."

"Oh," he replied. "Well that's all right too. We can't all be the
same, where would be the fun in that?"
