Characters: D'kere, Talwynn
Description: Talwynn tells D'kere about the weyrling trouble.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 3, day 22 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: E'naer, J'darin, A'kua

Talwynn wanted to talk to D'kere about the incident earlier in the
sevenday. She didn't want to have the talk in his weyr, or in hers -
those were places she associated with them, as a couple. This was
related to work. So she asked Riveth to reach out. Then she settled
down to wait until he was free, knowing it might take awhile. She
could use the chance to settle herself first.

}:Kenirath? My rider would like to talk to yours. At yours' office.
It's about weyrlings,:{ the green said.

She was slightly confused as to why her rider was having mixed
feelings about talking to Kenirath's rider. She liked the bronze, her
rider liked his rider, why was her rider feeling troubled?

D'kere was surprised by the message when Kenirath relayed it from
Riveth. He wasn't sure what was so important that Talwynn could not
wait and talk to him that evening, but he'd just sent away one of the
senior Weyrlings so he had the time.

}:He is available if she wishes to see him.:{ Kenirath replied.

Talwynn walked the extra paces down the hall to D'kere's office. She
knocked on the door, then ducked in. "My duty to you and Kenirath.
Sorry if we interrupted," she said.

He found her greeting oddly formal but said nothing of it as he looked
up and smiled, "Hey. Of course you're not interrupting. What's up?"

"I wanted to discuss a problem with you. Lissath's class had a
geography test yesterday. A few were gossiping, and that distracted
other members of the class. There was some yelling,"

The incident didn't seem very unusual from what D'kere had seen of
Weyrlings since he'd joined the Weyrling staff.

"And?" he asked.

Now Talwynn looked down at her hands, rather than at the bronzerider.
"They were questioning my fitness to be a weyrlingstaff member. Saying
I'm only on the job because I'm trading sexual favors for it. They
don't respect me, and that's a problem."

D'kere's jaw tightened as he felt a white hot flash of anger. **Those
petty little brats.** He came around his desk and took Talwynn's hands
in his own. "You're right, their lack of respect toward you is a major
problem. The other problem is that if I dole out punishment because of
what they said it will only seem to prove what they're saying is
true." He sighed. "What do you want to do about it?"

She curled her fingers around his. "They're little children and they
don't know what they're saying, but - " She cut herself off there. If
she kept speaking, she might cry.

"I wasn't sure," she said softly. "I wish there was a weyrlingmaster
to do it. They'd have to listen to E'naer though, wouldn't they?"

**They're not so little and they do know what they're saying.** D'kere
thought, but he didn't voice the words, not wanting to add to the hurt
that Talwynn was already feeling.

"I can talk to him about it and see. They should have to listen to any
of us, but no matter what we say they'll think what the want." He
raised her hands and pressed a kiss to them.

"I worked hard to get back to working here. I know I did," she said.
"I don't think it was just because you or J'darin pitied me."

D'kere released one of her hands to capture her chin and tilt her face
up so that their eyes met, "I have never pitied you, and neither did
J'darin. You were asked because of the merit of your experience. If
they see that their words effect you they will think there is truth
behind them. Riveth has authority of their dragons, the next time they
start in punish them, however you see fit, and have Riveth enforce
it."

The words of the weyrlings were cutting at her inside, but against
that she had the love of Riveth. And she'd always appreciated D'kere's
honesty and seriousness. The greenrider wanted to believe him, and
when he touched her face like that, she found it.

"I'm sorry I had to bring this to you."

"I am glad you came to me," he said, disregarding her apology. "I do
have a question though," he tilted his head, "why did you want to meet
here to talk?"

"This is work," she answered. "It would have felt wrong to meet in our
weyrs." And it would have put her closer to crying.

The hint of a smile lifted the corners of D'kere's mouth, "Okay, I
understand that. If you want to talk to your boyfriend about it later
though he will be in his weyr."

Her lips quirked in a little smile. "I'd like that."
