Description: K'ran gets to know the new Wingsecond.
Location: Dragonsfall Weyr
Date: month 1, day 2 of Turn 8
Notes: Mentioned: Mai
K'ran had met K'reyel briefly when G'nir introduced him to the other
ranking riders. He was curious about the new bronzerider who'd arrived
to take over the vacant weyrsecond spot on a permanent basis. Who
wouldn't be curious about a new ranking face? From what he heard about
the man, he was going to be a boon to the Weyr; of course, rumors
didn't tell you the truth about a person. So he was hoping for a
longer meeting soon.
Opportunity happened a few days later when he spotted K'reyel in the
ranker's lounge. "Good afternoon," he greeted.
"K'ran, isn't it?"
The short bronzerider nodded. "We started heading up Cyan late last
Turn. How are you settling into Dragonsfall? What do you and Erdenth
think about the weather?" Right now it was summer, an easier
adaptation than the winter might be.
"We'll get used to it." K'reyel grinned. "I haven't seen snow in turns,
since I was at Dream's End."
"It's a bit of a shock, isn't it? After some time at Ista and Dolphin
Cove I was ready to see it again."
"I just wonder what my son will make of it. To him, snow is something from a
Harper's tale."
"How old is he?" K'ran asked.
"He's three, four in month eight. Looks like his mother thank goodness."
"I hope he enjoys it here. Children are wonderful. Does your weyrmate
have thoughts?"
"Well we met at Dream's End, despite what her mother said, we've been pretty
happy. Mai is definitely the woman for me."
"Hopefully you'll both enjoy it here, then. I'm sure Azure's happy to
have the spot filled." K'ran was also happy it was. Now if only the
Weyrlingmaster's space would get filled, they'd have a full staff.
"I'm sure we will, once we have the rest of our things here." Mayel would
soon settle in once they found a good fostermother, and once Mai found a
spot with the Harpers. Yes, life would be good, and at last he'd finally
have the chance to bee seen as separate from his father. Not that he hadn't
had a good and solid apprenticeship there, it was time to journey a little,
and maybe achieve that mastery on his own, he mused.
The wingleader gave a sympathetic smile. "I remember how much 'fun' moving
is."
"Well hopefully we won't have to do it again for a good few turns."
"Hopefully so. You'll certainly not lack for opportunity or things to do
here."
"Well outside of wing duties, I intend to spend lots of time with Mai and
our son."
"I hope all of you wind up being very happy here. I'm pleased to have you
joining us."
"I'm glad to be here." And he was. Life had been good at River Bluff, but
this could be the chance he needed to make it better.
"Thanks for letting me ask you a few questions. I probably shouldn't
take up too much more of your time," the other bronzerider said.
"You aren't," a Weyr relied on the leadership being able to communicate and
know each other.
K'ran was thinking the same thing. It would be nice to be friends and
get to know K'reyel better if he was going to be sticking around
long-term. "If there's anything I can ever do for you, let me know.
I've been here long enough to know some fun secrets."
"I'll let you know." K'reyel grinned at that. "I'll probably need them when
it comes to amusing my son."
"Oh, there's plenty of interesting places for him to have fun. I'll be
intrigued to meet him, he sounds like fun."
"Be careful what you say, his mother and I need a good babysitter," the
words were in a teasing tone, but if someone would play with their demanding
son for a little while, he and Mai could spend some good, quality time
together.
"You know, I wouldn't mind trying it out. I did want a child," the
other bronzerider admitted. He hadn't found the right time or person,
but he'd be happy to help the Weyrsecond out.
"There's still time."
"I guess I'll see how I do with babysitting first. Let me know if
you'll need a hand for a few candlemarks."
"Oh, we will. Once you've offered, Mai will never let you forget."
K'ran smiled back. "It'll be an adventure. And if there's anything I
as a Wingleader can do for you, let me know too."
"I'll remember that," K'reyel said. "I will."
"I better get back to the medical reports, but thanks for taking some
time to get to know me. Have a good rest of the day."
