K'ran

**Rogueth, could you show Lissath where we are?**

The bronze peered down at where he saw his rider and his clutchmates,
then passed it to Lissath. }:My rider is here. He's excited for your
rider to meet his clutchmate,:{ the bronze said.

The family was all assembled, sitting outside on a bench and enjoying
the decent weather. Serra and Neja had on their finest clothes, plain
holder's fare but with fancy embroidered patterns to make them pretty.
The younger men looked nearly identical, as was the way of twins.
K'ran was wearing the same purple tunic he'd worn to the Harper Hall,
and was also darker tanned. Corran wore one in a cool grey.

"Will she be here soon?" Neja asked.

"She'll be along," K'ran said vaguely. He wondered what she was
wearing, and if she was still interested in meeting the family.

Genna was, in fact, very close by and as Lissath relayed her the image
Rogueth had sent, she got to her feet quickly. It didn't take her long
to locate the little family and she put on her brightest smile. It was
game time! "K'ran, there you are," she called out cheerily, coming up
closer and turning to his parents with a curtsy. "You both must be
Serra and Neja, it is so very nice to meet you. I'm Genna, rider to
gold Lissath."

Neja kept his composure as he put out his hand for her to shake. "How
do you do, Genna? My duty to your dragon."

Serra shot her son a sharp look before curtsying back. "Pleased to
meet you, weyrwoman. My son was very excited for us to meet, but I'm
afraid I don't know much about you."

"I'm Corran, hold guard. And he said he wanted to surprise us, not
have us pre-judge you," Corran put in before Genna could get the wrong
idea, like thinking K'ran was ashamed to talk about her. Because his
brother was good at giving people wrong ideas.

Genna took the offered hand and gave it a firm shake. "My duty to you
and your family," she said with a polite smile to Neja. "Then it's a
good thing we have some time to get to know each other," she then
replied to Serra. Turning to Corran next, her smile brightened a
little more. "Corran, your brother does speak highly of you." Finally
she turned to K'ran, reaching out to touch his arm lightly. "It's so
nice of you to arrange this. I'm glad everyone made it here alright."

"The flight was exhilarating for me, but a little more frightening for
them," Corran said, pleased by her praise.

"It's the /between/ that gets us. Are you used to it now that you have
your own dragon?" Serra asked.

"At one point it becomes everyday business and it just stops scaring
you," Genna nodded. "I have to say I'm actually going to miss it a lot
when Lissath is on the sands the coming sevendays. /Between/ comes
with such freedom!"

"She's on there a month or so with the eggs, right?" Corran asked. "Do
you have to stay with her the whole time?"

"You wouldn't be able to leave the weyr at all?" Neja wrinkled his nose.

"Well, Lissath isn't as uppity about it as I've heard some queens get,
so I guess I could leave for a while if I really wanted to," Genna
trailed off for a moment, looking in the direction of the hatching
sands. "But, to be honest, I don't feel like leaving that much at the
moment. It is her first clutch after all and it's such a special time
for us both. I enjoy our closeness."

"As long as it makes you happy," Neja said. For her sake, the older
man hoped she stayed happy about it. A month sounded like a long time
to be stuck.

"There's always waiting when children are involved. Human or dragon
ones," Serra said sympathetically. She'd had two children of her own
who were well grown and gone by now, before she'd taken the twins in.

K'ran was beginning to feel like an outsider in the meeting he'd set
up. His parents were so good at socializing. They seemed to like
Genna, or so he hoped. His mother didn't seem too happy about the
surprise he'd sprung. He suspected he was going to pay for that later.
"Do we want to move inside or stay out here and enjoy the summer sun?"

"Whatever your family wants to do," Genna said with a smile, gesturing at
the bronzerider's parents to make the decision. "I can imagine they have
places they'd like to see." She eyed K'ran for a moment and remembering
what she had promised herself she decided to up the stakes a little. As
inconspicuously as possible, she slipped one arm around his waist, looking
as if it was completely normal for them to be that close.

His arm automatically went around her and he tried not to blush in front
of his family.

"I'd like to stay outside and watch dragons for a bit. Amber Hills might
have the gather caravans but dragons are something we don't see a lot,"
Neja said.

"And the sun will do us all good," Corran agreed.

"Would Lissath mind if we saw her at some point?" Serra asked tentatively.

"Lissath would be delighted to meet you," Genna smiled. And if she wasn't,
Genna would make sure she'd at least act like it! "She spends a lot of time
at the sands already, she even got me moving stuff to the temporary weyr
there. She's officially still at least a week away, but then you never
really do know." She shrugged slightly, inwardly tingling with joy as
K'ran's arm came up around her. "But yeah, if you would like to visit the
hatching sands, she'll be there."

"I've never seen any dragon other than Rogueth up close. Thank you Genna."
his father said.

"It's hard to imagine how much wonder they inspire when we get used to
them," K'ran said.

"It really is," Genna nodded. "Though I bet Rogueth still gets some
weyrbrat boys drooling over him from time to time," she laughed. Lissath
did have her fair share of admirers too. "Would you like to go see her now,
or shall we just sit here and relax for a moment first? I'm up for both."

'We'd like to go see her," Serra said after looking at her husband first.

'Thank you', K'ran whispered to Genna as they started walking. He was glad
that it seemed like they were getting along well.

Genna gave K'ran a warm smile that clearly spelled 'your welcome'. She
pointed out various points of interest to K'ran's family as they
casually strolled for the hatching caverns. "Does everyone have decent
boots?" she asked, suddenly realising they might not be prepared for
the Hatching Sand's heat.

Serra looked down at her shoes, and at her husband's. "We do."

"Wouldn't go /between without them," Corran said. "So Genna, my
brother isn't too much of a cad is he?"

"A cad?" Genna laughed cheerfully at that. "Oh no, I would rather say
he is too much of a gentleman than too little!" she gave K'ran a
teasing wink, wondering how he would take that.

K'ran blushed.

"I'd hope my sons were raised right," Neja said stiffly. But when he
saw his son's expression, he realized it was a joke.

"We raised them too right, perhaps. Two bachelors at their age, what a
shame." said Serra.

Genna leaned towards Serra in a conspiring way, whispering. "Not for long,
if I can help it. I hope I can bring the count to one for you." She gave
the woman a cheerful wink, marvelling at her own audacity.

Serra beamed at the young goldrider. "I hope so. He deserves happiness,"
she confided softly.

Neja carefully increased his pace to give the women a time to talk, so the
boys had to catch up. "So tell me why you didn't tell us more about Genna
before?" he chided.

"I wanted you to be surprised and not assume things about her because of
her rank," K'ran said. He didn't like the idea that his family might think
he was ashamed of her or anything. "I just want you to like Genna for who
she is. Not because of her dragon, or even because she's special to me."

"We can't help liking her because of that," Neja said. "But I understand.
Now that we know, you'll have her stop by more often?"

"why don't we see how today goes first? We have time for you to get to know
her - it's not like you have to pair me off right now." This wasn't a hold.

"You're right. But we just want to see you happy."

"Genna makes me happy," K'ran said a little louder than he expected, loud
enough for them to here.

"He does," Genna agreed with Serra whole heartedly. "He's the most sincere
person I've ever known. When I impressed Lissath I felt more than a little
paranoid about making new friends, always afraid they only liked me because
of her. K'ran cured me of that." The smile that touched her eyes showed
obvious affection.

Serra nodded. "I raised my sons to not care about rank but about the
person. I'm glad he makes you happy. He sounds happy when he talks about
you, too."

Genna blushed a little with pleasure. "I do my best. I just hope one
day he'll bring down those walls of gentlemanliness and tell me how he
really feels." She was amazed at how easy it was to talk to Serra.
She'd never once been able to have such a personal conversation with
her own mother and here was a practically strange woman who she was
telling her innermost desires!

Serra was disappointed that both the boys hadn't found anyone yet. In
their thirties and still unmarried? Corran could have been married and
had a child of at least 10 by now by now, instead of being wedded to
his work. And while a weyr was different, K'ran could have at least
fallen in love once.

But seeing the way the bronzerider kept looking back at Genna, she had
a good feeling.

"He's shy, but he'll come around I hope. If you ask me, he just
doesn't know what to do when he really likes someone. But he'll tell
you," Serra said confidently.

"I hope so," Genna smiled. By the they had reached the hatching
cavern. Lissath had heard of their coming and had made her way to the
entrance, curious to see what all the fuss was about. As the small
group entered, the gold greeting them up-close and personal, her giant
head drifting just inches from the first in line - Neja.

The older man stood rooted in place as the dragon's head approached.
"She's very large," he breathed.

"Sorry brother, but she's way more impressive," Corran said.

K'ran couldn't object - it was true that Lissath was larger than his bronze.

"She's so pretty. And what a good mother she'll be." Serra's eyes ran
down the dragon, looking to see if she could see the eggs inside.

"I think so too," Genna smiled, looking at the little family that had
gathered around her dragon. Maybe one day they would be her family as
well. Dare she think that? This day was certainly a step in the right
direction.
