Lenala

Lenala

Lenala waited until the lesson was over before approaching the young
greenrider. She wasn't sure why she was so interested in A'dryn. He
was male greenrider after all. But something in the boy's situation
with his parents had struck a chord in her. Would her parents acted
like that if she had Impressed a green? If that bossy blond girl had
Impressed Vilarth instead of her?

"Hello, A'dryn. How are you doing?"

He blinked in surprise. "Oh... hello Weyrwoman's Second. I--I'm doing
well. Thank you." She was a goldrider, one of the most important
people on Pern. But he also remembered the way she wrapped him in a
hug after the Hatching.

"It's Lenala," she said rather firmly. "Call me Lenala."

"Lenala," he said shyly, a little smile turning up the corner of his
mouth. "Thank you for your kindness at the Hatching."

"It's not a big deal, just part of my job," Lenala said with a light
smile. "We are your family now, we look after you," she continued with
serious tone.

He took a moment to gather his courage. "Do you truly feel that way?"
His family had disowned him and he had no one. Well, there was
Lanniya, and B'jon was nice. And that bluerider in his class...
perhaps he wasn't quite so alone.

"Yes. You can be my cute little brother," Lenala replied and actully
reached out to ruffle his hair. "I'll be the annoying big sister."

That surprised a little laugh and a real smile out of him. "It's quite
an honor to have a goldrider in the family."

"Really? You apparently don't know much of goldriders. We tend to be
demanding," Lenala said with self-sarcastic smile.

"You seem very kind. And so is Lanniya." The gold weyrling was the
happiest, kindest person he'd ever known.

"Thank you," Lenala said, deciding not to comment about Lanniya. Their
problems were their problems, not the whole Weyr's.

Nalarith landed nearby, kicking up some sand. }:I want to meet this
one. She makes you remember something bad but she also makes you feel
good.:{ Her eyes whirled with curiosity.

"Nalarith wants to meet you." **Be polite, she's a goldrider.**

}:I know she is Vilarth's rider.:{ She huffed, slightly indignant.

"Nalarith, I'm pleased to meet you. You're grown well," Lenala greeted
her and walked around her, inspecting the green.

Nalarith made a little croon. "She says thank you, but she has a lot
more growing to do," A'dryn relayed.

"Yes, she does. Not as much as Vilarth had in her age," Lenala said
with nostalgic smile. "She very pretty green."

Nalarith arched her neck. A'dryn laughed. "You're definitely winning
her over." The green was quite pleased and it spilling over into their
bond.

"At least I can still win over somebody," Lenala said. Vilarth let out
a rumble that had a jealous note in it. "And I'm making mine envious,"
she added with a light tone.

}:You are very lovely Vilarth,:{ Nalarith said. }:And you have chosen
a good, kind rider.:{ Nalarith liked anyone that was nice to A'dryn.

"Oh, I'm sure you have all kinds of admirers," A'dryn said. She was
beautiful, young and a goldrider.

}; Of course, I did choose well, :{ Vilarth replied to the young green
with more amiable tone.

"There are admirers and then there are friends, and the later are much rarer."

A'dryn smiled. "I never would have dreamed of having a goldrider as a
friend. And now I have two."

"You're very lucky young man," Lenala smiled back.

Not in every way, but... for someone like him, he really did have more
than he could have hoped for.
