K'ran

~*~ flashback to mid m13 ~*~

K'ran had brought Corran from Amber Hills and they were visiting their
family's cothold. Serra had set a table with a pot of klah and mugs.
She was bringing out snacks as they entered, and set them down so she
could hug both of them.

K'ran accepted the hug, picked up a mug of klah, added his preferred
large amount of sweetener, and settled back into the chair. "Thank
you."

"How have you both been?" Neja asked as he sat down.

"I'm doing well. Some interesting times up at the Hold," Corran said.

"As interesting as when the lady was kidnapped?" the older man asked.

Corran shook his head. "Nothing so dramatic. Minor thefts. I'm only
mentioning it because I want you to at least make sure that the
cothold is secure and you lock up any of the valuables."

He didn't say that he'd be happier if they came to the Hold. Corran
had been pushing for it more over the last Turn. When Amethyst Cliff
had the earthquake they'd been undamaged, and Corran had worried that
they'd receive less services with the major Hold still reeling. But
he'd been so new to Amber Hills that he hadn't wanted to deal with
trying to make them move if it turned out to be a terrible place. So
far they'd been fine, but between the kidnapping and possible
bandits... he'd feel easier if he could keep his eye on his family
directly.

"We'll take precautions," Serra assured. "Do you think Turnover should
still be safe?"

"More importantly, are you working Turnover?" K'ran interjected.

"I was going to volunteer. The festivities don't much interest me."

"If you haven't, you shouldn't. I was hoping to ask all of you to come
to Dragonsfall's events."

"I didn't know the Weyr did much," Neja said.

"They don't do a lot. Most dragonriders prefer to /between/ to one of
the Holds for the big festivities," K'ran explained. "But there's
always something going for the caverns workers and those who can't get
away, and it has been a bit since you've visited me."

"Not since you were at Dolphin Cove," Neja said.

"Why are you asking us there?" the guard asked.

K'ran's toe tapped on the floor, a sign he was nervous. "Well,
there's someone I'd like you to meet. And she's not going to be able
to travel from the weyr. So I thought maybe you could come visit."

Serra clapped her hand together. "Why didn't you tell us you were
seeing someone? Is she going to be your weyr marriage?"

"No, I don't - the term's weyrmate. But no." The bronzerider
floundered. "We're not really seeing like...that. She's just a
friend."

Corran decided to step in. "The one you mentioned tutoring and telling
about flight patterns, right?"

K'ran shot his twin a grateful look for the fact that the guard hadn't
mentioned Genna's name or rank and for being discreet. "Yes."

"Isn't she going home?" Serra asked, pursing her lips slightly. She'd
heard about weyr licentiousness and wondered what the revels were
like.

"She'd rather be with her Weyr family. And I'd like to spend time with
her too. But of course I also want to see you. If you'd rather not
come up to the Weyr, I can make it work."

He could /between/ to the cothold, spend time with them, and return to
the weyr in time for the dancing. But he'd liked the idea of them all
meeting each other.

"I'd love to go," Corran said.

"I could stand for seeing how weyrmen celebrate," Neja said.

"Then I'll go as well," Serra said, feeling outnumbered by the boys.

"Excellent. I'll be here to pick you up," K'ran said with a big smile.
He hoped they'd like Genna.

~*~

K'ran unstrapped himself first, then turned around to face his family.
"We made it safe," he said, suppressing a smile at his father's
white-knuckled grip on the straps. Apparently /between/ hadn't been
good for him.

"Thank you, Rogueth," Serra said.

Corran was already working at his straps with the ease of practice.
Together the twins helped the older people down. K'ran waved a hand to
indicate the weyrbowl. "Welcome back to Dragonsfall, much nicer in the
summer than the winter," he said grandly.

"It doesn't look as busy as I remember," Serra said.

"K'ran did say people go elsewhere," Corran said, peering around
looking at the dragons along their ledges. There were so many
different shades within the five basic colors. Having Warden gave him
a little taste of this life, but now he felt a stab of regret that he
hadn't Stood.

"And many people are inside for the food and the dancing to come,"
K'ran reminded.

"Including this mysterious friend you aren't telling us about?" Neja said.

"Including her. Come on, let's go," the bronzerider said, escorting
his family in.

Hopefully this would go well.
